Historical or Biographical Note
Helen Swift Mitchell (1895-1984) was a nutritionist, author, and teacher. She was the author of Nutrition
in Health and Disease, a standard college text for over 50 years. She also conducted a dietary survey of
the fisher folk of Labrador and Newfoundland for Dr. Wilfred Grenfell in 1929.
She received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1921. She then worked as the Research Director at the Battle
Creek Sanitarium from 1921-1924. Then she was a Professor of Physiological Chemistry at Battle
Creek College from 1924-1935. Then she became a Research Professor of Nutrition at the University of
Massachusetts from 1935-1941. She served as the Principal Nutritionist at the Office of Defense, Health
and Welfare from 1941-1943. Then she was Dean of the School of Home Economics at the University of
Massachusetts from 1946-1960.
Collection Description
Personal papers of Helen Swift Mitchell (1895-1984), nutritionist and physiologist. Materials include:
correspondence; biographical material; clippings; reprints; nutrition survey materials; and subject files
on Pavlov and Mendel. Collection also contains research from studies on the fisher folk of Labrador and
Newfoundland. Correspondence is primarily professional, consisting of letters from other nutritionists.
