VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram?
T e xt Re spo nse
Spring 20 0 9
I had always wanted to live in Seo ul and this was my chance.
I wanted to venture o ut and experience life away fro m the co mfo rt o f my family and friends. I had been living in So uthern Califo rnia my entire life and tho ught the o ppo rtunity
to live in a who le new enviro nment with unfamiliar surro undings as a student wo uld be o ptimal, so I seized the o ppo rtunity to experience so mething new in my o therwise
no rmal, ro utine life.
I never went to Ko rea befo re but since I'm ethnically Ko rean I wanted to see the culture and life in Ko rea as an exchange student. I also wanted to impro ve my Ko rean
speaking skills.
Because I wo uld never have had the chance to go to Ko rea/live there.
To experience my native culture o n my o wn witho ut any family members
As a Ko rean-American, I wanted to experience the culture as well as meet native Ko reans in the land that my parents grew up in.
I wanted to experience so mething co mpletely fo reign to me and Ko rea pro vided a nice alternative to the po pular pro grams in Euro pe. Ko rea University was my first cho ice
in partner scho o ls.
I knew fro m freshman year that I wanted to go abro ad. I cho se asia o ver euro pe, because to me euro pe is still an area that I go to take vacatio ns. I felt that I wo uld be mo re
co mfo rtable in an asian enviro nment seeing that I might wo rk abro ad in the future. I picked Ko rea in particular because I had been interested in that culture and language.
I wanted to study in a co untry that I may no t have visited o therwise fo r a very lo ng time, I wanted to challenge myself by living so mewhere very different than the U.S., and I
wanted to study so mewhere where I co uld study fo reign language and co urse wo rk fo r my o ther majo r as well as fo r my business co ncentratio n. I cho se Ko rea University
specifically in Ko rea because I felt the university wo uld pro vide the best exchange experience o ver any o ther universities in Ko rea.
With reference to IEP, I cho se this pro gram because it allo wed me to co mplete my business co ncentratio n at a well qualified University while experiencing a different
culture. With respect to Ko rea University, I cho se it primarily because it has been o ne o f my lifetime go als to study in Ko rea. Also , I knew Ko rea University o ffered a larger
range o f English to ught business co urses in co mpariso n to Seo ul Natio nal Univesity, and I wanted to build up my netwo rk in case I wo uld like to visit o r wo rk in the co untry
in the future.
I wanted to yo see if I co uld live in Ko rea and male the co nnectio ns there to succeed.
Wanted to explo re and learn abo ut the co untry I was bo rn in.
In o rder to see what it was like living in Ko rea by myself. I wanted to reco nnect with the Ko rean culture.
to learn mo re Ko rean and learn the perspectives o f native Ko reans

34. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at
USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences?
T e xt Re spo nse
It do esn't differ much, but there seems to be less ho mewo rk.
They give yo u a lo t mo re reading quizzes which can get anno ying. Yo u also get a lo t o f gro up pro jects which can be difficult when yo u are in a gro up o f all Ko rean students
who want yo u to do mo st o f the wo rk since yo u are a native English speaker. Other than that, the structure is pretty similar to USC.
The class times are sho rter, which I preferred.
I like the fact that USC o ffers mo re challenging co ntent in which I co uld be mo re engaged.
all lectures, mandato ry attendance (dislike!), makeup classes ( dislike) mo re presentatio ns
attendance is mandato ry fo r mo st classes, if yo u miss 4 classes yo u fail auto matically (STRONGLY DISLIKE)
attendance is wo rth mo re in Ko rea than back at SC
I had no midterms and very few ho mewo rk assignments. Abo ut 50 % o f the co urse grade is determined by yo ur final exam and the remaining po rtio n is split between
attendance, participatio n, ho mewo rk, pro jects, etc. One co urse typically meets twice a week fo r 75 min. I liked the structure, altho ugh attendance was mandato ry.
Pro fesso rs are usually willing to wo rk with yo u if yo u need to miss a few co urses, ho wever.
They were actually very similar I was quite surprised. The classes in ko rea were mo re pro ject based and there were many presentatio ns.
My business and po litical science co urses were the same structure as at USC. I never to o k Ko rean languages classes at USC so I do no t kno w any differences o ther than
my co urse at Ko rea University being taught in 9 0 % Ko rean, which wo uld mo st likely be taught mo re in English at USC fo r a first semester Ko rean co urse. My histo ry co urse
was radically different than what wo uld have been taught at USC. I was given lectures o f 3-5 pages o f no tes in a class typically, and I was expected to free write abo ut 2 o ut
o f 8 o r 9 bro ad to pics o n a list cho sen at rando m o n bo th the midterm and final exam in additio n to putting events in chro no lo gical o rder. My exams were wo rth 8 0 % o f my
grade, and I felt that I was tested o n my ability to memo rize, no t o n what I learned. I extremely disliked this difference.
The majo rity o f the pro fesso rs prepared their o wn slide and lecture material rather than the o nes given by the textbo o k publisher. As a result, the pro fesso rs were no t o nly
experts in the field o r to pic they were teaching but in fo rmat o f the material they lectured. Also , the gro up pro jects that inco rpo rated mo re real wo rld applicatio ns o f the
co ncepts we learned during lecture were effective.
So me o f the co urses are very unstructured.A lo t o f them are steaight o ff the bo o ks butyo u are required to be in class. Missing mo re than co uple o f classes will result in an
F. I did no t like the attendance po licy at all.
Structure was very similar except midterms were given within a week.
There weren't much differences. The co urses are structured very much like USC with yo ur grades determined by midterms, finals, gro up pro jects, and participatio n. One big
difference was that all the pro fesso rs take attendance and attendance is taken very serio usly. If yo u have a certain number o f absences, then yo u are subject to failing the
co urse.
At KU, there is a week so lely dedicated to midterms. So me pro fesso rs will set their midterms a week befo re o r after midterm week o ut o f co urtesy. Also , the class blo cks
are usually 1hr15min lo ng, with 15 minute breaks in between so yo u can walk to yo ur next class witho ut pro blems.

Business Nego tiatio ns with Pro fesso r Kim Tae-Gyu. Excellent co urse o n nego tiatio n, very dynamic and interesting.
Advertising Management. Yo u get to watch and study co mmercials during every class sessio n.
Co nsumer Behavio r - with Pro fesso r Sung-Ah Yo o n. She kno ws her stuff, and has spectacular credentials. Business Nego tiatio ns - with Pro fesso r Tae-Gyu Kim. THE best

I heard that business nego tiatio ns was a really interesting class. As fo r my classes, there's no ne that I wo uld particularly reco mmend since I didn't think they were

BUSS 213 - go o d pro fesso r and best english

Jin Hee Cho i Co nsumer Behavio r - Pro f. So ng Yo o n
I reco mmend taking anything fro m Pro fesso r Fabian Fro ese. He's very helpful to students and quite funny. He speaks great English, to o , which is a plus.
I really enjo yed my Management Acco unting class because Pro fesso r S. Han was very interesting and friendly. I also reco mmend taking a Ko rean language class because
it really helps with yo ur co mmunicatio n skills.
Dr. Jae Yun Mo o n fo r any business techno lo gy co urses. She was my MIS pro fesso r, and she made a technical subject interesting and easy to understand. Dr. Jo o Yo un

Also , she is great at running a discussio n and helping yo u create a stro ng view o n Chinese po litics that is backed up with suppo rt fro m what yo u learn in her co urse. Dr.
Park Sang So o is a very straightfo rward Histo ry pro fesso r. I do no t like ho w Histo ry tends to be taught in Ko rea, but I enjo yed him as a pro fesso r. Dr. Jang Eun Hee fo r
Beginner's Ko rean 1 if yo u can handle a teaching style in mo stly Ko rean and very little English. I learned much mo re than I wo uld have learned fro m many o ther pro fesso rs
because o f ho w she taught. She made learning Ko rean fun, she was very helpful, and I co uld ask her in English mo st questio ns I had abo ut Ko rean witho ut a pro blem.
Futures & Optio ns by Pro fesso r Bae Ho Kim - The Pro fesso r is o ne o f the yo ungest, yet mo st kno wledgeable and well kno wn Pro fesso rs o f the finance department. It's a

Furthermo re, this pro fesso r is no t o nly enthusiastic and dedicated to his lectures but also his o ffice ho urs. I also suggest Investment by Pro fesso r Do ng Wo o k Kim and
Internatio nal Finance by Pro fesso r Jaiho Chung. Similarly bo th demanding and challenging co urses, but pro ving very useful in my summer internship. Bo th Pro fesso rs are
very passio nate abo ut their co urse, so they do their best to co ver as much co ntent as po ssible thro ugho ut their lectures.
I wo uld reco mmend managerial acco unting
I wo uld definitely take Internatio nal Business with Pro fesso r Jo n Mo o n. He was a very enthusiastic instructo r.
Internatio nal business. Since yo u are studying abro ad, I think it is necessary to take at least o ne internatio nal business co urse. I wo uld also reco mmend taking classes that
fo cus o n Asia and Ko rea since yo u will no t be able to take such co urses elsewhere.
Here was my list I referred to during registratio n. #1 being the easiest. I to o k o ut #2 (Intermediate Acco unting) because it was no t by easyness o r reco mmendatio ns, but
rather my perso nal desire. 1. Business Nego tiatio n a. Kim tae gyu 3. Advertising management a. Jin hee cho i 4. Co nsumer behavio r a. Sung-ah yo o n 5. Managerial
acco unting a. S. han 6 . Anything fro m Fabian fro ese 7. Internatio nal marketing management a. Insik jung 8 . Pro duct and brand management a. To ny garrett Starting fro m
20 14, CPA candidates must fulfill their ethics requirement. Fo r my semester, the o nly ethics business co urse was Co rpo rate Go vernance, and this was o nly slightly harder
than Business Nego tiatio n (which is kno wn in KUBS to be o ne o f the easiest co urses). Managerial acco unting by S. Han was also no t to o bad. It was just like BUAD 28 1,
but mo re slo wly and carefully explained and with easier tests. **During registratio n, make sure yo u register AS SOON as yo ur time slo t starts. Registratio n with KUBS is
frustrating every semester fo r exchange students, and their administratio n--fo rced to allo w yo u to have units--will input any class (to tally regardless o f yo ur timing
preferences and so mewhat o f class preferences) in if yo u canno t get yo ur schedule set. At USC, yo u co uld co ntinually check fo r o pen slo ts, but at KUBS, if yo ur schedule
isn't set during yo ur registratio n slo t (which lasts abo ut 5-7 days, 3-5 weeks befo re classes start), then yo u have to wait until the first week o f classes to edit yo ur schedule.
Even then, yo u have 5 days to reschedule and then no student can edit their class schedules after that first week. Due to the tight deadline, the KUBS Internatio nal Office
enters chao s fro m endless amo unts o f exchange students, so even if yo u have to stay awake at 4am to register, I advise yo u that it is 140 % wo rth yo ur time. FYI, I heard
fro m a few pro fesso rs that they o nly accept 15-20 % o f their class as exchange students. It co uld depend o n their preferences, and so me co uld add even mo re by signing a

Yes! Because I was immersed in a mo re co mpetitive and intense study atmo sphere at Ko rea University, I was naturally inclined to fo llo w their pattern o f life: study REALLY

It's no t necessary and if yo u haven't previo usly studied Ko rean, I think cramming wo uld be futile. It co uld be useful to kno w so me basic greetings and sayings befo re yo u
go . A number o f websites have pro nunciatio n tips and teaching reso urces.
I do n't think yo u have to , but it'd be nice to just learn so me co mmo n phrases fro m the internet.
Try to learn a fo reign language's alphabet and so me key wo rds and phrases befo re go ing abro ad, if po ssible. Also , intro duce yo urself to fo reign media such as music and
film befo rehand so yo u can learn a little and get used to the fo reign language being spo ken.
Watch TV sho ws and mo vies in that langauge. It's the fast and mo st enjo yable way to learn. Furthermo re, yo ur pro nunciatio n will be mo re accurate. Many o f the no nKo rean students I met who spo ke Ko rean well were tho se who were interested and regularly watch Ko rean media and music.
There isn't a way to prepare fo r language differences in classes but learn the basics fo r travelling abro ad. The students and pro fesso rs will speak to yo u in English. The rest
o f the co untry wo n't
Learning bssic Ko rean phrases wo uld help to get aro und in Seo ul. Ho wever mo st yo ing Ko reans will be able to assist yo u if yo u speak English to them especially the
co llege students.
Take an intro ducto ry Ko rean language class o r buy a bo o k that teaches yo u co uple o f phrases and the do 's and do n'ts.
The culture o f Ko rea is mo re impo rtant than the language itself. -drinking -handshake -greeting -eating -speaking o n public transpo rtatio n -use o f two hands

46 . Is there any aspect o f the pro gram that yo u wo uld like to see changed
o r different? (VERY IMPORTANT!)
T e xt Re spo nse
Ho using situatio n. The ro o ms aro und campus are very very small. wo uld like to find so me alternative to scho o l ho using, witho ut the huge depo sit.
No t really. Ho using was a little co nfusing if yo u didn't get accepted into the do rm but no exchange students I spo ke to o had any majo r pro blems.

Yes. The relatio nship between the Ko rea University Business Scho o l and USC didn't seem to be that stro ng. It was difficult to register fo r the classes we wanted to at first,
which was so mewhat stressful. Ho using was also a huge stress fo r peo ple like me who didn't have family o r friends to stay with in Ko rea. Having no o ppo rtunity o r chance
to get o n-campus ho using altho ugh I were o ne o f the first peo ple to apply was frustrating. As fo r everything else, the pro gram itself was fine and I appreciated all that
everyo ne went thro ugh to help this pro gram beco me successful.
their ho using management and also registering fo r classes very uno rganized and very inefficient
The administratio n in Ko rea is very po o r, but I'm no t sure what USC can do to change that.
Ho using - Really sucked they didn't o ffer a go o d co uple hundred o f us ho using. But they're building a lo t mo re internatio nal ho using so I do n't think it'll be a pro blem fo r
any future USC students go ing abro ad.
The paper registratio n pro cess is a pain and Ko rea University makes us wait until right befo re classes to register. When yo u do n't immediately get what yo u want, yo u're
fo rced to scramble fo r a co urse that interests yo u. I was adding and dro pping classes even after classes began. I think exchange students sho uld be able to utilize o nline
registratio n like everyo ne else and it wo uld be nice to have everything secured further in advance.
Just kno w that signing up fo r classes is VERY HECTIC during the first week. At first I tho ught that I wasn't go ing to get any business classes. But it so meho w wo rks o ut in
the end. I suggest that KUBS start using o nline registratio n fo r exchange students rather than the paper system they use no w.
Yes. The perso nal advising fo r no n-academic issues available to exchange students is very po o r. Whenever I needed so mething, I was either no t given helpful info rmatio n,
o r I was given wro ng info rmatio n. When I was sick fo r a mo nth I was directed to an English-speaking do cto r who se clinic was much mo re expensive than if I went to the
Ko rea University ho spital. I did no t find o ut abo ut the lo wer co st at the ho spital until talking with ano ther USC exchange student at Ko rea University abo ut it so me time
to wards the end o f the semester.
No t anything that USC's side. If yo u are interested in a suggestio n fo r the ho st university: Allo w us to make student ID cards prio r to arrival since it serves as o ur bank card
and subway (T-Mo ney) card. We get the IDs o ne mo nth into the semester so we already have third party bank and subway cards made by the time we get o ur student smart
card.
There isn't much USC can change its really Ko rea University
It wo uld be nice if there is a po ssibility fo r having acceptance letters sent earlier so that students can bo o k their flights earlier at a lo wer price.
I wish KUBS co uld take care o f their registratio n pro cess fo r exchange students a bit better, as it makes students feel very o n edge. KU has two "do rms." The first do rm is
Anam Do rm, filled with native Ko reans and structured mo re like a do rm like New No rth o r Pardee. CJ Internatio nal is mo re like Parkside Internatio nal Residential Co llege: a
suite-style do rm which is o riginally planned fo r mo re fo reign students. It's spacio us, relatively new, lo cated near the to p o f the hill next to a separate main gym (and so ccer
field/basketball co urts). CJ Internatio nal is co mpo sed o f almo st all internatio nal students, and there is a raffle to get into CJ Internatio nal because o f such high demand.
Many o f my peers have go tten rejected and had to lo o k fo r last-minute ho using abo ut 3-4 weeks befo re scho o l started. CJ Internatio nal is right next to a scho o l cafeteria
(EXTREMELY cheap meals), but it is slightly far fro m Anam Statio n. The KU main gym is also mo re o n the expensive side, but the facility is nice, equipped with two tracks,
ro ck climbing, squash, etc. I cho se no t to use a KU do rm due to several reaso ns. I lived at Anam Do rm two summers ago and they had a curphew at 12am, where the
security guy fo rces yo u to sleep o utside. I hear that it is no t like that fo r Anam Do rm during the regular semester, tho ugh. Ho wever, there are o ther rules like ho w bo th CJ
Internatio nal and Anam Do rm do no t let friends o f the o ppo site gender to even enter the elevato r to get to yo ur ro o m. CJ Internatio nal, altho ugh very cheap co mpared to
Lo s Angeles prices, also o n the 8 0 %-10 0 % expensive side o f ho using aro und Ko rea University. If yo u wish to find alternative ho using, I fo und this site VERY useful:
http://go shipages.co m/ Ho wever, go shiwo n/go shitel/hasukjib ro o ms are VERY small. I am warning yo u no w: Imagine the smallest ro o m yo u can fit in, and then put a bed
in there right next to a desk. (Meaning, listen to Sean O'Co nnell, PACK LIGHTLY o r yo u will suffer). On the plus side, it's cheap and the lo catio n is much mo re co nvenient.
I'd HIGHLY reco mmend living next to Anam Statio n, as that is where all KU students gather to eat/drink/party/study. I live at New Gen Go shitel (I am VERY picky, and this
was the best o ne I fo und thro ugh pro cess o f eliminatio n o f all cho ices as o f February 20 13). It is o n the expensive side, but it is new so it is clean, with go o d service fro m
the manager. Even better? There's a cafe just upstairs fo r me to study at and I live within 10 0 feet o f pro bably 10 -30 restaurants/bars (but my ro o m is triple-windo wed fo r
insulatio n and no ise-reductio n), and no t to mentio n, Daiso , a true mo ney saver to an exchange student, as yo u will find o ut. Oh, also there is a po pular private gym that
many KU students go to , literally 10 steps away fro m me go ing fo r $9 0 fo r a three mo nth membership. All fo ur gyms aro und KU give yo u wo rko ut clo thes, so leave tho se
o ut o f yo ur luggage unless yo u plan to exercise o utside o f the gym.

While the internatio nal do rms fo r internatio nal exchange students were beyo nd amazing, there were very few spo ts. Fo r the 70 0 + exchange students who came to study
abro ad in Ko rea this semester, there were o nly abo ut 30 0 o r so spo ts to acco mo date the internatio nal students. Granted, the sudden surge in po pularity o f exchange
students co ming to Ko rea may have taken Ko rea University by surprise, and because Ko rea University is currently in the wo rks to building mo re o n-campus ho using fo r
internatio nal students, I am assuming it is safe to say that altho ugh I was no t granted ho using, future students need no t wo rry because their ho using needs sho uld be met.
On the o ther hand, I go t o ff-campus ho using at a studio that I shared with my ro o mmate, and I abso lutely lo ved it. The place was fully furnished, equipped with a kitchen and
was much mo re than I had expected. It was very clean and the price was decent.

I wo uld reco mmend that students bring plenty o f cash with them at the beginning o f the semester because it takes abo ut a mo nth fo r the scho o l to issue yo u a mandato ry
bank acco unt (into which yo u can wire mo ney fro m the US). There is a co nvenient bank o n campus where yo u can exchange currencies.

The o n-site services weren't that great, especially during co urse registratio n. Since the exchange students were no t able to dro p and add co urses o n-line, we had to visit
the internatio nal o ffice everyday until we were able to fully figure o ut o ur schedules. It was a big hassle because even tho ugh I visited the o ffice every day, I still did no t end
up with the co urses that I wanted. Many students did no t exactly get all the co urses that they wanted because the slo ts were filled up very quickly.

T e xt Re spo nse
Three times. Japan, Taiwan, and China.
I tried to stay in Seo ul to fully be able to experience living in the city but traveled so o ther Ko rean cities a few times.
I did no t travel to o ther co untries, o nly within the co untry. A lo t o f exchange students (and by that I mean like 9 9 percent o f them) went to Jeju Island and Pusan (to p
destinatio n spo ts within the co untry), as well as Japan, Ho ng Ko ng, Taiwan, Thailand, China, amo ngst o ther East Asian Co untries because it's definitely cheaper to fly o ut
o f here than fro m Lo s Angeles.
t I went to Cambo dia befo re I came to Ko rea. Other than that, I haven't had any o ppo rtunities to travel o utside o f Ko rea.
o nce a mo nth China and aro und Ko rea
Once to China during ho liday week fo r 9 days and co uple times to o ther parts o f Ko rea o ver the weekend
n/a - we stayed in Anam (in Seo ul)
It's easy to travel within Ko rea with the subway system and trains/do mestic flights. Internatio nally, I traveled to Thailand and I am co nsidering Japan, which is quite clo se.
I went to Jeju island and Busan. I usually visited to uristy sites every weekend. So me o f my o ther friends made trips to Japan, Ho ng Ko ng, and o ther nearby Asian co untries.
I traveled almo st every weekend. Mo st weekends I traveled aro und Seo ul because it is very large. Outside o f Seo ul, I visited Jeju Island, Busan, Suwo n, Jeo nju, and
Incheo n. I did no t travel o utside o f Ko rea.
I didn't do lo ng distance travel very o ften. Only twice, bo th times with the ho sting student o rganizatio ns. First trip to Jeo nju and seco nd to Daesungli. Ho wever, mo st o ther
exchange students traveled at least o nce a mo nth. Jeju island and Busan were the mo st po pular travel lo catio ns as well as nearby co untries such as Japan, Thailand and
China.
Did no t travel
I did no t travel very much because I really wanted to explo re the city and really get a go o d feel fo r what it was like living in Seo ul like a resident there.
I spent mo st o f my time near KU, as I knew that I did no t want to leave Ko rea.

51. Did the structure o f the ho st institutio n's co urse schedule fo ster travel
o ppo rtunity o r prevent it? Why?
T e xt Re spo nse
It helped that I didn't have classes o n Friday, but the attendance was strictly taken, which made it a bit hard.
Fo stered. I arranged my schedule to have no class o n Fridays and missing class was no t that big o f a deal.
It depends o n ho w yo u schedule yo ur classes, but I did no t have Friday classes, which meant three-day weekends every week. Hanging o ut with Ko rean natives so mewhat
made me want to stay in Seo ul and hang o ut with them by go ing sho pping, watching mo vies, eating, and go sightseeing all lo cally. Ho wever, I think if classes are planned
o ut strategically, travel is mo re than po ssible. One thing to keep in mind tho ugh, is that the pro fesso rs expect students to co me to all the lectures, and attendance is taken at
the beginning o r the end o f every class. With that being said, it did no t affect the exchange students eno ugh to no t miss class, but the precautio n is there.
It disco uraged travel o ppo rtunity in the sense that attendance was mandato ry. Ho wever, if peo ple wanted to make time fo r it they co uld definitely travel if they wanted to .
prevent- mandato ry attendance, no t many days o ff to travel aro und
Prevent it because attendance is mandato ry, so yo u canno t take trips fo r mo re than a co uple days unless there is a ho liday.
Yes
If yo u plan yo ur co urses right, it can. There was no spring break, but pick classes witho ut midterms and yo u will get a who le week o ff in the middle o f the semester. Like I
said befo re, attendance is mandato ry in mo st classes, but pro fesso rs o ften understand the wishes o f exchange students (as there are many o n campus).
It was pretty go o d fo r travel because they had a lo t o f ho lidays. Also classes were usually just till thursday, giving yo u an extra lo ng weekend.
Prevent it because generally no absences are given in mo st circumstances, and lateness is taken into acco unt. Missing class o r being a few minutes late harms yo ur
grade.
In my case, I to o k o n a rigo ro us co urse schedule even fo r a lo cal student, so it prevented. Ho wever fo r mo st o ther exchange students, it fo stered because they had little
ho mewo rk, the grading was genero us and so me co urses didn't have midterms o r finals.
Bo th because there weren't a lo t o f classes o n Friday but prevented it because o f the attendance po licy.
All the pro fesso rs have a limit o n ho w many classes yo u can miss befo re yo u receive an auto matic F. Ho wever, if yo u schedule yo ur classes acco rdingly (and if yo u are
flexible o n which co urses yo u want to take, etc.), yo u will have a lo t o f o ppo rtunities to travel,
It's literally just like USC, o nly that spring semester has maybe two days o f ho liday at KU. Yo u can make yo ur o wn schedule. Ho wever, it feels like Ko rea University has
mo re wo rk than universities in Euro pe so co urselo ad may hinder traveling abilities.

52. Do yo u have any tips o r info rmatio n abo ut traveling while abro ad that
yo u wo uld like to share with upco ming exchange students preparing fo r their trip?
T e xt Re spo nse
Make sure to bo o k tickets with plenty o f time, and lo o k fo r ho stels o nline, as well as po pular travel spo ts.
I'd reco mmend traveling to o ther cities in So uth Ko rea o utside o f Seo ul. It's really different an interesting to see. Yo u get a mo re co mplete perspective o f Ko rea.
If anything, I think the mo st impo rtant thing to have while traveling abro ad is an o pen mind and a po sitive attitude. WIth that, it's nearly impo ssible fo r the exchange students
no t to have fun and enjo y their stay here. Time flew fo r me during my stay here, and I'm scrambling in my last three weeks here to fulfill all the things o n my to -do list with the
peo ple I've co me to lo ve and care deeply abo ut upo n co ming here. So unds cliche, but I truly believe that learning to appreciate what's in fro nt o f yo u here and no w will
further enhance any experiences yo u're go ing thro ugh.
One thing I wo uld reco mmend is budgeting and finding ho w much yo u will want to spend, ho w yo u're go ing to get the mo ney, whether yo u might need a new credit card o r
lo ts o f cash, etc.
travel in the beginning when co urses are no t as busy
Travel early in the semester befo re co urse wo rk piles up.

Plan ahead to save mo ney.
Talk to lo cal students abo ut travel suggestio ns. They usually kno w the mo st abo ut places to go in their ho me co untry. Also , ask exchange students who traveled to where
yo u want to go to befo re. Asking USC students who studied at yo ur exchange university befo re is also a great way to prepare fo r a trip. Lastly, make sure to leave early
because it takes a lo t mo re time to mo ve aro und a fo reign co untry, especially when yo u are no t co mfo rtable with the fo reign co untry's language.
Travel with a lo cal!!! This will help yo u find cheaper, co nvenient and better quality transpo ratatio n, places to stay, fo o d, etc.
There apparently is a cheap bus ticket fo r students go ing do wn so uth fo r under the age o f 25 Ko rean age. If taking a taxi make sure to get the taxi number and let so meo ne
kno w it in cases o f emergencies. Just because yo u are in a fo reign co untry do no t igno re the news there be aware o f yo ur surro undings.
Mo st yo ung peo ple speak go o d English but I highly enco urage future students who want to study abro ad in Ko rea to study a little bit o f Ko rea and the culture. I think this
helps with the experience a lo t. The city really never sleeps so it's a really exciting place fo r students to be in.
As so o n as yo u land in Ko rea, get a public transpo rtatio n card. Peo ple lo ve public transpo rtatio n in So uth Ko rea because it is so co nvenient, quick, and cheap. Yo u can buy
and refill these cards at subway statio ns o r co nvenience sto res. They can even be used as a debit card to pay in co nvenience sto res. Subways, buses, and taxis all accept

The fact that I was in a co mpletely different co untry.
Getting to kno w Ko rean students. They pro gram really helps yo u meet lo cal students and mo st o f them are excited and mo tivated to get to kno w fo reign students as well. I
hung o ut with a lo t o f lo cal students as o ppo sed to just o ther exchange students. I really feel that I go t to be a Ko rea University student fo r a semester as o ppo sed to just
having taken classes at the scho o l. I kno w that I will keep in co ntact with a lo t o f the peo ple I met here lo ng after I leave.
The cheap and delicio us fo o d, the co zy cafes, the o verall safe enviro nment o f the never sleeping streets.
Experiencing the Ko rean culture and fo rming relatio nships with peo ple all o ver the wo rld as well. Definitely was an eye-o pening experience and I felt like I learned a lo t

Being able to meet peo ple fro m aro und the wo rld and experience life in a new co untry.

The buddy pro gram (KUBA). The 'buddies' are all very o utgo ing and nice. I met my clo sest gro up o f friends thro ugh the pro gram, bo th exchange students and Ko reans. It's

Students are much mo re eager to build new relatio nships which fo sters a greatenviro nment to make new friends fro m all o ver the wo rld--it's like Freshmen year all o ver

I think having KUBA buddies was a very special part o f the pro gram. It really did help with the transitio n fro m the States to Ko rea. Thro ugh the pro gram I made go o d friends

T e xt Re spo nse
Different climate.
Gro up pro jects. Exchange students end up do ing a lo t o f the wo rk since we are better at English.
Language and cultural barriers. But it definitely can be o verco me.
I wo uld say ho using was difficult fo r me. I wo uld also say being in a fo reign co untry made it hard to go to the places I wanted to .
co mmunicating with natives
Dealing with Ko rea University administratio n and co urses taught by pro fesso rs with po o r english
The co ld. No t used to anything but sunny So Cal weather.
Attending class o n a regular basis.
The mo st difficult part was settling in the beginning. I didn't kno w any Ko rean and co uldn't find my apartment and was sitting o ut o n the curb fo r two ho urs waiting fo r my

Co llectivist thinking in gro up pro jects. My gro up meetings wo uld take fo rever because everyo ne wanted to make all decisio ns as a gro up. I just delegated the wo rk and to o k
mo re co ntro l to make it mo re efficient.
When peo ple bump me, I instinctively respo nd by saying, "excuse me" even tho ugh it isn't my fault. Ko reans are always o n the go , and do no t seem to have an "excuse
me" culture. The lack o f a perso nal space barrier within peo ple came o ff as a bit o f a culture sho ck fo r me, but after a co uple o f days, I grew accusto med to the culture. While
I didn't actively go aro und trying to bump sho ulders with rando m peo ple o n the street, I also wasn't surprised when the next perso n bumped me to walk past my slo w pace
o f walking.
Peo ple do n't say "excuse me" but just bump into yo u left and right o n the subway. I wo uld say just being able to be patient and willing to understand the culture helped me. It
allo wed me to talk to o ther Ko rean students and find o ut that peo ple here do n't intend to start o r right o r be rude but that's just accepted as part o f their culture.

I canno t think o f anything majo r. I learned a lo t abo ut Ko rean culture and had lo ts o f help fro m Ko rean friends, so I adjusted quickly. Any pro blems I had were the result o f
no t being understo o d becuase I do no t speak Ko rean, no t because o f culture sho ck o r cultural misunderstanding.
I threw a pen to an upperclassmen who was in my gro up because he was acro ss a seminar ro o m table. The o ther lo cals aro und the table were a bit surprised as it was
extremely rude behavio r to thro w so mthing when handing so mething to so meo ne, even yo ur peers o r friends. He knew I was a fo reigner so advised me no t to do that to

no t be yo ur fault at all since yo u didn't kno w. And seco nd, explain ho w in the US, _______. That way yo u sho w a go o d gesture that yo u do no t want them to be o ffended

I think being in a co mpletely new enviro nment, despite me being Ko rean, just came acro ss as a sho ck fo r me. Little things such as no t kno wing where to buy to ilet paper,
etc. was a disco mfo rt. Ho wever, being so mewhere new and getting adjusted takes time.
So metimes the subway gets EXTREMELY cro wded. To the po int that yo u really can't mo ve at all. In Ko rea, because o f its limited land and the co mpactness, peo ple
frequently bump sho ulders and thus do n't apo lo gize fo r it. On the subway, do n't be surprised if yo u think they will run yo u o ver. If peo ple are trying to leave and yo u are in
their way, I advise yo u to go with the flo w and exit to reenter.

That my o riginal ho using assignment had been revo ked due to HORRIBLE administratio n and co mmunicatio n.

Use lo cal airfare search sites. They're usually cheaper than go ing thro ugh the airline direct.
Do n't bring to o much stuff, yo u'll end up buying a lo t!
Co nsult friends and o ther students mo stly because they are mo re helpful than a guidebo o k. Also , leave early when go ing places because it takes a lo ng time to go aro und

Go with the flo w. Do no t be to o nervo us that yo u do n't have trips set up every weekend with exact itineraries, especially because previo us semester's students to ld yo u

Plan ahead and act o n it quickly. Yo u get caught up with scho o l and hanging o ut with friends in Seo ul and after awhile, traveling beco mes harder. If yo u are go ing during the

Fo r all future IEP Students: Speak with students who have studied there befo re. Mo st students who have been o n the abro ad pro gram are very o utgo ing and friendly,
especially because we're all Tro jans. Reaching o ut to students who studied at KU befo re me was mo st helpful in preparing me fo r my semester abro ad. Also be pro active

go o d relatio nship with the peo ple in the business scho o l internatio nal o ffice no matter ho w frustrating the situatio n gets. At first, yo u will mo st likely o nly get registered to 12 o ut o f the 6 yo u request.
