OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram? T e xt Re spo nse I have lived in Euro pe and felt that a pro gram there wo uld be so mewhat o f a repeat experience fo r me. Of the lo catio ns remaining in Australia and Asia I wanted to cho o se a place where I tho ught I co uld travel a lo t easily, had stellar academics, and was a business center. Ho ng Ko ng was all tho se things fo r me, and I selected CUHK o ver HKUST because CUHK had fewer pre-requisites fo r finance classes Well regarded fo r its business pro gram and I had never visited Asia befo re. It was my 8 th cho ice Ho ng Ko ng is a great place to learn finance I did the Winslo w Maxwell Glo bal Internship in Lo ndo n the previo us summer. After this incredible experience in Euro pe, I wanted to co ntinue my abro ad experience yet in a different setting. After making this decisio n, I cho se Ho ng Ko ng with the Marshall Scho o l as it o ffered bo th the o ppo rtunity to study and spend an extended perio d o f time in Asia (Jan-May 31st semester) as well as fulfill co ncentratio n credits--so mething unavailable elsewhere fo r business majo rs. I wanted to study in an Asian co untry, but didn't kno w a fo reign language. I figured that Ho ng Ko ng wo uld have the highest po pulatio n o f peo ple who speak so me English as well as Canto nese. I actually placed Ho ng Ko ng as my 7th cho ice and when accepted, I was neither ecstatic no r interested in reading abo ut the pro gram. I called my dad and he to ld me that this was the best experience I co uld have been o ffered by USC and that I sho uld have placed Ho ng Ko ng as my number 1 cho ice, no t 7th. He said I am go ing and that I had no cho ice. In retro spect, he co uld no t have been mo re right - Ho ng Ko ng was the greatest experience o f my life and I am so glad I had to the o ppo rtunity to go and take full advantage o f the experience It was o ffered to me as o ne o f my to p 5 cho ices, and having been to Ho ng Ko ng and heard spectacular things abo ut the University/wanted to explo re mo re o f Asia so I to o k the o ppo rtunity. Wanted to learn mo re abo ut the Chinese culture and way o f do ing business. Also because Ho ng Ko ng is Asia's financial capital I wanted to no t o nly beco me immersed in the culture o f Ho ng Ko ng, but I also wanted to better my Chinese skills in bo th Mandarin and Canto nese. I also am interested in po ssibly living there in the future. I wanted to study in Asia and I tho ught that Ho ng Ko ng wo uld be the perfect place because o f it's financial impo rtance in Asia and it is the fro nt do o r to mainland China and the rest o f So utheast Asia is easily accessible fro m Ho ng Ko ng. I wanted a mo re internatio nal experience rather than the "euro pean experience" that mo st o f my friends went to . HK is a great city and it also o ffers a go o d o ppo rtunity to have a lo o k aro und the big Asian cities. In a business wo rld, it is very impo rtant to have glo bal experiences. I have also been interested in po tentially wo rking in the co untry o f my cho ice, so I tho ught that do ing a semester abro ad wo uld be beneficial to me. Ho w much study time per week do yo u reco mmend in o rder to keep up with classes? T e xt Re spo nse Heavily depends o n the classes yo u take. Finance classes co uld take 5 ho urs a week each where as management classes might o nly require 1-2. Pro bably 15 ho urs. The students study hard and exams are challenging. 3-5 5 ho urs 5-7 Abo ut 2-5 ho urs per week until the final mo nth o f classes, then it's abo ut 7-15 ho urs per week no t many take ho me assignments - mo stly just in class activities, midterms, and finals - i wo uld say 5 ho urs the week befo re an exam at mo st 4-5 ho urs depending o n pro jects 10 ho urs a week aro und 1-2 ho urs a night 10 ho urs, the classes are very easy. Did yo u like o r dislike these differences? T e xt Re spo nse Class structures were very similar to USC. It varied by pro fesso r but o verall classes were no t surprising in their structure. The o nly thing that differed was midterms were all bunched up o ver a 2-week perio d, and the last two weeks o f scho o l every single class I to o k had at least o ne majo r thing due in additio n to a test. Mo re emphasis is placed o n midterms and final exams. So me o f my finance co urses had ho mewo rk assignments, while o thers had maybe 1 pro ject in additio n to the exams. I liked this because it allo wed fo r time to explo re HK and travel. Very unstructured co mpared to classes at USC. The final exams are wo rth between 50 -10 0 % o f yo ur final grade. This makes them very stressful. The gro up pro jects (no t to be co nfused with case studies), are extremely impo rtant and can be time co nsuming. In mo st o f my classes a gro up pro ject co mprised at LEAST 40 % o f my to tal grade. This is go o d and bad. I did o ne pro ject with gro up members in 10 hrs the day befo re and passed with flying co lo rs. Other pro jects I had to put in a little mo re time. Cho o se yo ur gro ups wisely, and make sure to get a mix o f bo th lo cal and internatio nal students--yo u can learn a lo t abo ut Ho ng Ko ng fro m the lo cals (and they do a lo t o f wo rk) and its really interesting to see ho w o ther internatio nal students think. There was very little to do in mo st o f my classes fo r the first 3 mo nths o f scho o l. I o nly had o ne midterm in each class, as o ppo sed to 2 midterms at USC. There are gro up pro jects in every class that are due abo ut the same time as the final exam, so the last mo nth o f classes is really busy. It's a pain to try to meet with 4 o r 5 different gro ups while studying fo r tests. First o ff, in Ho ng Ko ng, the language barrier is difficult to o verco me. Yo u get used to the accents o f the pro fesso rs, but it is still impo rtant to pay clo se attentio n. Seco nd, mo st o f the classes are 3 ho urs lo ng - this is pure hell co mpared to USC. It is very difficult to stay awake and aware o f what is go ing o n. Third, so metimes the pro fesso rs will speak in Canto nese to lo cal students in the class and then yo u, as an English speaker, are left clueless. Fo urth, way less wo rk o utside o f the classro o m required co mpared to USC (almo st no in class quizzes o r ho mewo rk) The classes are mo stly structured aro und a large gro up pro ject, maybe o ne exam o r two . Very little ho mewo rk fo r mo st classes. Finance/acco unting classes can get extremely co mpetitive and difficult. Grades are almo st co mpletely co mpo sed o f tests but at USC, there are many different facto rs that go into o verall grades. I disliked the difference because I feel like assessing a student based o n his/her ability to perfo rm well o n a test is no t the best way to test their understanding o f the material. Remember that fo r a lo t o f the teachers, English is a seco nd language and therefo re, so metimes, it is harder to understand them. Because o f this, yo u may feel disco uraged because yo u canno t understand them and the teaching styles are different. I didn't like this very much but it did co ntribute to the experience. pretty much the same, lectures and discussio ns. I think it was rather equivalent to what USC has to o ffer, depending o n which co urses yo u take. Fo r me, I wish I did mo re research o n the co urses befo re I came to Ho ng Ko ng because a lo t o f it was rather dry, and didn't demand as much critical thinking. In additio n, a lo t o f it included a lo t o f self-teaching. Exams plays a mo re impo rtant ro les, so studying individually after class is necessary, and participatio n is no t strictly required. It's difficult fo r me to co ncentrate into the materials during the lecture witho ut actively participatio ns, thus I prefer the way USC uses. Class participatio n is less impo rtant in classes abro ad; I prefer the structure o f classes at USC. St at ist ic To tal Respo nses Value 14 26. 35.
