Aims
The aims of this lesson are to enable you to work with:

a Traditional Story told on your CD with
questions (written and spoken) from your Course

a Modern Story to which you answer questions
(written and spoken) in your own words

two Poems, traditional and dialect. You are
asked to discuss them and look at their style and content. Guidance will be
given on these beforehand: (c.f. Nightmail)


Context
After this lesson you will have a Tutor-marked Assignment, in
which you can practise what you have learnt, and have this
marked and commented on. I am sure you will do very well!
More on Listening and Writing
In this Lesson we will have more listening to the CD
and answering questions aloud and on paper. You
have been told the techniques, now all that is important is for you to practise
them.
Our first Activity will be listening to a Story, and then answering questions on
it. We all love stories, starting from childhood when traditionally On our
Mother’s Knee, we would listen to all the best well-loved tales. It is no chance
that Harry Potter has attracted so much popularity both with young and old
alike. These tales have everything that enchants the youngster in us, magic,
the battle of good versus evil and of course good winning…It is no
coincidence that our favourite folk tales often feature unreal creatures, both
beautiful and ugly, and in many there is the constant struggle of life versus

The Story that you will be listening to is called:
The Sleeping Beauty
You will listen to the story as with the others in Lesson Nineteen, about three
times, writing notes if you wish, ready to answer the questions below as part
of your first Activity.

Please answer the following Questions:
Why did the Princess fall asleep? Explain in not more than fifty
words.
Describe how the Prince heard about the Princess: again as
briefly as you can.
Try to tell and/or write the story in your own words: about 100
words.
