Interpreting the Frequency Distributions Report
Variables
The items from the NSSE survey appear in the left
column in the same order and wording as they appear
on the instrument.
Sample
The Frequency Distributions report is based on information from all randomly selected or censusadministered students for both your institution and your comparison institutions. Targeted and locally
administered oversamples and other non-randomly selected students are not included.
NSSE 2012 Engagement Item Frequency Distributions
Benchmark
Items that make up the five
“Benchmarks of Effective Educational
Practice” are indicated by the following:
LAC=Level of Academic Challenge
ACL=Active and Collaborative
Learning
SFI=Student-Faculty Interaction
EEE=Enriching Educational
Experiences
SCE=Supportive Campus Environment
Variable Names
The name of each variable appears in the
first column for easy reference to your
raw data file and the Mean Comparisons
report.
Class
Frequency distributions
are reported separately
for first-year students
and seniors. Institutionreported class ranks are
used.

Count
The Count column
represents the actual
number of students who
responded to the
particular option in each
question. Counts are
unweighted.
Column Percentage (%)
This column presents the weighted percentage of students responding to the
particular option in each question.
Weighting
Weights adjusting for gender and enrollment status (and by institutional size for comparison groups) are applied to the percentage column (%) of this report. Weights are computed separately for firstyear students and seniors. Weighted results present a more accurate representation of your institution and comparison group students. Only the column percents are weighted. The count is the actual
number of respondents. Because the counts are unweighted and the column percentages are weighted, one cannot replicate column percentages from counts. Additional details about weighting can
be found on the NSSE Web site. nsse.iub.edu/links/institutional_reporting
