The Need for Forensic Archaeology
and Anthropology
Forensic archaeology and anthropology are fast
developing disciplines within archaeology, designed to
provide police forces with a range of specialist skills.
These skills range from simple bone identification
to the location of clandestine graves, their careful
excavation and recording, and the biological profiling of
any human remains recovered. The appropriate use of a
forensic archaeologist and anthropologist during police
investigations ensures that all necessary guidelines are followed and that professional
standards are maintained.

Our Expertise
Why work with Archaeology
South-East?
We assist with the setting up and implementation of
searches for clandestine graves in both small gardens and
wider areas of the countryside, offering advice as to the
appropriateness of various scientific search techniques
and carrying out geophysical surveys if necessary. The
team is experienced in the careful recovery of both
surface and buried human remains. Careful and controlled excavation of a clandestine
grave ensures that the maximum amount of evidence is
recovered and ensures that the integrity of that evidence
is maintained. Subsequent analysis and biological
profiling of human remains recovered can greatly assist
a police investigation.
Good teamwork at a crime scene is essential and we
are experienced in working alongside other forensic
specialists and specialist police teams.
The Senior Forensic Archaeologist is Lucy Sibun
BSc PgDip AIFA who has over 12 years experience
working alongside Police Investigation Teams at crime
scenes. She has written many Expert Witness reports
and statements and given Expert testimony in court.
The Senior Forensic Anthropologist Roxana Ferllini
BSc. M.A., has 20 years experience in the field, including
police related cases in the United Kingdom and Latin
America; as well as experience in human rights investigations. Roxana currently coordinates the MSc in Forensic Archaeological Science
at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL.
They are supported by a team of qualified and
experienced forensic archaeologists, osteologists, field
archaeologists, surveyors, geophysicists and illustrators.
The dedicated surveying team provide spatial control
and an accurate record of the scene; our illustrators
then ensure that any field drawings are accurately and
professionally reproduced.
