2015 is the centenary year of Brighton’s unique
First World War Indian military hospitals, which
treated over 12,000 Indian soldiers who had
become wounded or sick on the Western Front.
In January we will be marking the centenary
with a new multimedia tour of the Royal
Pavilion, exploring not only the story of the
famous Indian hospital, but also the building’s
use as a hospital for limbless men.

War Stories:
Voices from the First World War
Continues to 1 March 2015
BRIGHTON MUSEUM & ART GALLERY
Free admission
To commemorate the 100th anniversary
of the start of the First World War, this
exhibition brings to life the wartime
experiences of 13 individuals whose
intensely personal memories and
extraordinary stories reveal the impact
of war.
The diverse voices of individuals reveal
both familiar and surprising stories of a war
that profoundly changed British society. See
the war through the eyes of a young girl
born in 1914, an Indian soldier wounded
on the Western Front and taken to hospital
in the Royal Pavilion, soldiers from
Brighton, including a Brighton & Hove
Albion footballer, nurses and a gardener
who was imprisoned for his pacifist beliefs.
Personal letters, diaries, photography,
costume, film and memorabilia evoke the
love, excitement, fear, bravery, grief, loss
and longing that touched the lives of
millions of people.
Reflections on our personal and
collective acts of remembrance and
commemoration explore the continuing
impact of war on our lives.
This exhibition has been made possible by funding
and support from the INTERREG 2 Seas Programme –
a cross-border European cooperation programme,
co-financed by the European Regional Development
Fund.

The Amazing Analogue:
How we play photography
Continues to 3 March 2015
ROYAL PAVILION

HOVE MUSEUM

Maisie Broadhead’s stunning installation
continues in the Music Room.
Visitors are invited to experience the
palace in a new way, as the Music Room
becomes a decadent doll’s house, dwarfed
by giant figures peering curiously in through
the windows.
The installation is inspired by the scrutiny
George IV experienced from a society which
became obsessed, fascinated, intrigued,
even disgusted by his life in the extravagant
Royal Pavilion and detached from the reality
of the outside world.
The work plays with our voyeuristic
fascination with peering in at other people’s
lives and homes - especially those of
celebrities and royals.
Maisie Broadhead graduated from
Brighton University and the Royal College
of Art, originally working with jewellery.
She works increasingly with photography
and film, creating atmospheric
contemporary narratives inspired by
historical paintings and photographs.
Young imaginations take centre stage in
an exhibition of inspiring, joyful and
curious images.
German photographer Jan von Holleben
collaborates with young people from
Brighton & Hove and employs perspective, props and a box of tricks that owes
much to the early film pioneers celebrated
in Hove Museum’s extraordinary collection.
Exploring a mysterious archive of
unidentified slides and negatives, Jan and
his young team set out to discover what the
strange images might depict, and to
construct incredible machines that might
help to analyse them.
‘Everything is possible [in my work] –
we can fly to a distant universe, build
machines that can otherwise only be
dreamt of, see ghosts, or shrink ourselves
to dwarf-size; there are no limits apart
from our own responsibilities and skills.
This is how we play photography.’
– Jan von Holleben
This exhibition is a Photoworks and Brighton & Hove
Museums co-commission for Brighton Photo Biennial
2014.

The Royal Pavilion
as an Indian Military Hospital
Open now
ROYAL PAVILION
Admission payable, members free
A permanent gallery on the first floor of
the Royal Pavilion tells the story of how the
Royal Pavilion was used as an Indian
Military Hospital from December 1914 to
January 1916.
To commemorate the centenary of the
opening of the hospital, a display of archive
images in five of the Royal Pavilion’s ground
floor rooms shows the rooms in use as the
Indian Military Hospital.

Ocean Blues
Ongoing throughout 2015
Bite-size Museum
Every Tuesday and Saturday from
Saturday 24 January
SPOTLIGHT GALLERY
The oceans are home to more than half of
all life on earth, cover 70% of the earth’s
surface and have supported life for
millions of years, but the last century has
seen the oceans devastated with the
invention of plastics and industrialised
methods of fishing.
From marine conservation zones to
changes in fishing, and recycling
programmes, we are now beginning to
change the way we treat the seas. This
display looks at some of the threats to life
in the oceans as well as initiatives designed
to reduce or reverse the impact modern
society has had on this precious
environment.

SOUTH BALCONY
Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) was an
Anglo-Welsh artist, born in Belgium. This
display features a series of remarkably
emotive black and white prints of wartime
Belgium, capturing the destruction of its
historic architecture, the flight of its people
and the hardship endured by the troops on
the Western Front.
WILLETT GALLERY
The Museum Mentors, a group of
individuals with varied critical social needs,
created a film and a display of ceramic
objects around the theme of charity in
response to objects within the Willett
Collection of Popular Pottery.
This display forms part of the Out of the Blue Waide
Project, within the framework of the INTERREG IV A
France (Channel) – England cross-border European
cooperation programme, co-financed by the European
Regional Development Fund.
