Course Objectives
This course will introduce you to the notion of website localisation from a translator's point
of view. You will have the change to use various tools and manage website files for the
purpose of localisation.
Software
Main software: Transifex, SDL Trados Studio 2015/MemoQ/Memsource
Additional (demonstration): Photoshop, Dreamweaver & various online tools
Course Content
The first part of the course will focus on the concept of localisation within the translation
industry and the idea of multiple target audiences and cultures. You will become familiar
with the main principles of website localisation and the place it has in the translation
industry, following a discussion on the basics of web pages (structure, elements, values, code
etc.). During the second part of the course, you will follow the steps included in website
localisation. You will be introduced to various tools used for text, code and media processing
and practise with a choice of tools available in the lab and online. In the last part of the
course, we will discuss the process of creating web localisation projects using CAT tools and
perform relevant tasks. Participants will have the chance to work in a cloud-based
environment and localise websites in three different types of editors. Finally, participants will
be added to an online group that will last for a week where they can talk about their
experience using the various tools introduced in the course and discuss any issues with the
rest of the participants and the tutor. Participants will also be given resources on the
software used in the lab.
