February, 1988 Dear Alumni and Friends of the Texas Tech Law School: This issue reports on our endowment and annual gift campaigns. Texas Tech University completed its Enterprise Campaign this month. We participated in the Enterprise Campaign primarily by initiating drives to create endowed professorships. I am delighted to report that we were successful in completing our drive to fully endow the Judge Robert H. Bean Professorship of Law. This is the first endowed professorship at the Texas Tech School of Law! We also successfully launched a drive to endow the Alvin R. Allison Professorship of Law. Several substantial gifts have already been received. The trustees of the Law School Foundation will meet in April to approve a plan to accelerate the completion of this endowment drive. The growth of our endowment is a mark of the success of our Law School. I am also happy to report that our total Foundation income was up over last year. Contributions in our annual giving campaign were about the same as last year but the number of contributors actually increased. This is very gratifying. I am also happy to report that the University matched endowment gifts made by our faculty members. This added approximately $12,600 of endowment strength to our Foundation. We are blessed to have faculty who believe in our program and University administrators who recognize our special needs. The M.D. Anderson Foundation increased and renewed their support of our faculty here at the Texas Tech School of Law. We hope to be able to increase Foundation support in the future. Certainly our alumni have supported us generously and this enables us to seek support from outside sources. Sincerely, W. Frank Newton Dean 1 LAW SCHOOL NEWS Robert H. "The judge wanted the money used at law schools to train people who wanted to be lawyers, particularly in antitrust." Halbert O. Woodward Lecture Given The first annual Halbert O. Woodward Lecture was presented on February 25, 1988 in the Forum. The lectureship was made possible by the contributions of attorneys from throughout the state, many of whom are former law clerks of Judge Woodward. The lectureship was presented upon Judge Woodward's taking senior status in the Northern District of Texas. The Honorable Thomas M. Reavley, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, presented the lecture . Judge Reavley's topic was "A Perspective on the Moral Responsibility of Lawyers." James Sales, president-elect of the State Bar of Texas, introduced Judge Reavley to the standing room only crowd. Judge Reavley exhorted the audience to hold to the highest principles of ethical conduct. "If the lawyer's demeanor and reputation exhibit integrity and moral character, and if the lawyer demonstrates that character by casual statements as needed during the early stages of representation, the client should anticipate advice based upon high moral standards ... We should not forget that our effort serves the fabric and justice of society by the contribution to social order and community." Judge and Mrs. Halbert O. Woodward were honored during the first annual lecture presented in the Judge's name. Newton and Tech law professor Dan Benson, along with Furr's attorneys, attended the negotiations to represent Tech as a possible recipient of the funds. The Honorable Thomas M. Reavley presented the Halbert O. Woodward Lecture. The money will be used to complete the law school's 1150,000 Enterprise Campaign to establish a law professorship in the name of retired District Judge Robert H. Bean. (See related story, page 2) The professorship is designated to support teaching and research in civil law. Local Firm Helps Law School Acquire Antitrust Funds Portions of a multi-million dollar civil court judgment will be used to benefit legal education in Texas including Texas Tech University School of Law. Texas Tech Law School is the recipient of 1100,000, thanks to the efforts of Lubbock-based Furr's, Inc. , one of numerous claimants in In re: Corrugated Container Antitrust Litigation, M.D.L. 310 (S.D. Tex. 1987). The class action suit was the result of antitrust violation charges filed against the manufacturers of corrugated boxes and other containers in United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. The court order, entered in October, 1987, by Judge John V. Singleton called for the distribution of approximately 11,060,000 in residual funds to six Texas law schools, the National Association of Attorneys General and two packaging foundations. "Actually, this settlement is really a success story. It's a relatively unique situation that money left LEGAL MONEY -- Texas Tech University President Lauro F. Cavazos (left), accepts a check in the amount of 1100,000 from Furr's, Inc. President Jan Friederich (center), and John Osborne, Furr's Vice President and Treasurer. The money, part of a civil judgement awarded to Furr's and numerous other companies represented as claimants in an antitrust violation suit, was designated for distribution to state legal education funds. The money will be used to complete the endowment of a Tech School of Law Professorship. (Tech Photo by Artie Limmer) 5 ALUMNI NEWS PLACEMENT / CLE Dozier Endowment Established An endowment in memory of Allen Dozier ('85) has been established at the Texas Tech School of Law by Allen's former classmates. Allen died on July 8, 1987 as the result of an apparent suicide. He had been working as an associate with the Abilene firm of Glandon, Erwin, Scarborough, Baker, Choate & Arnot. 6 The purpose of the endowment is to establish the mechanism for instructing all students attending Tech Law School in the dangers of stress and the techniques available to manage it. This would be accomplished through a combination of talks given at first-year orientation, establishment of individual support groups, and an annual seminar on stress management for all Tech law students. It is anticipated that attorneys would also be allowed to attend the seminar at a nominal cost. The goal of the Allen Dozier Endowment is to provide law students attending Tech the tools with which they can recognize and manage stress throughout their careers, in the same way in which they are given the tools with which to practice law. It is estimated that an initial fund of $5,000 will be necessary to properly establish a selfsustaining endowment capable of accomplishing such a goal. To date, Allen's classmates have accumulated just under $500 toward this initial fund. Contributions for this endeavor from the Tech alumni are requested and urged. Persons wishing to contribute to this endowment may send their donations to the Allen Dozier Endowment, Texas Tech Law School Foundation, Texas Tech School of Law, Lubbock, Texas 79409. Anyone having questions or comments about the proposed activities of the endowment can contact Darvin Morrison, P.O. Box 10236, Lubbock, Texas 79408, phone 806/763-9555. Environmental Law Symposium Hosted by Law School The Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Texas sponsored a seminar on March 23 at the Texas Tech Law School. The seminar presented various areas of employment opportunities in the environmental law field. Speakers representing governmental agencies, public corporations, private practice and public interest practice spoke to the group about their respective areas. Also emphasized was the nature of environmental law practice, such as the administrative side of the practice. Prof. Frank Skillern, who sponsors the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Society of the Law School, said that the State Bar Section is encouraging student interest in environmental law areas by sponsoring seminars at all of the law schools in the state and by sponsoring a writing contest for law students. Job Fair Repeats Success -, The 1988 Texas Young Lawyers Association Job Fair was held in Arlington on February 19 & 20. Seventytwo Texas Tech law students were selected for interviews conducted at the Radisson Hotel. A total of 350 law students from Texas Tech, Baylor, St. Mary 's, University of Houston, Texas, South Texas, SMU and Thurgood Marshall School of Law participated in the interviewing sessions. This was the second Job Fair held in Texas . "The Job Fair offers employers a chance to interview students from a variety of schools without having to allocate travel time and expense for several locations. It also puts our students in contact with employers who do not participate in our on-campus interviews," said Dean Kay Fletcher. A lumni Association Dues Response F avorab Ie The Texas Tech Law School Association has 290 dues-paying members. Larriet Thomas, treasurer of the Association, reports that the membership continues to respond favorably to the decision to collect dues. Mike Crowley, president of the Association, stresses that the dues are to be used for projects selected by the Association and are not to replace the annual giving campaigns of the Law School. "The strength of a Law School is measured, in large part, by the support of its alumni," said Dean Frank Newton. "We are encouraged by the initial success of the Association and invite all alumni to join." Updated Alumni Directory to be Printed Seminar speakers were guests at a faculty luncheon at the law school prior to the seminar. A reception for speakers and students was held in the Forum following the seminar. An updated Alumni Directory will be published in June. Corrected names and addresses must be received by May 15 in order to be included. Do You Have A Clue? Richard Maxwell has undertaken the daunting task of compiling a history of the Tech Law School. Can you help? Memorabilia of your years at the Law School such as programs, photographs, letters, diaries, even a reminiscence that you think would be appropriate for a popular history of the school would be appreciated. Please send any such items to Richard Maxwell at the Tech Law School. Anything you send us will be kept secure and returned to you when the work is done. Assistant Dean Kay Fletcher helped to coordinate and supervise the second annual Job Fair. A substantial savings could be realized by the Alumni Association if some of the desk-top publishing is handled by the Law School staff. If any supporter of the Law School could provide a Hewlett-Packard laser printer to the school from June 1 through 15, we will have the Directory "camera ready" for publishing. Please contact Dean Frank Newton (742-3793) or Asst. Dean Kay Fletcher (742-3804) if you can help. 7 State Bar Convention A ctivities Set The Texas Tech Law School Alumni Association will be meeting during the State Bar Convention, June 9-11, 1988, in Fort Worth, Texas. 8 On Friday, June 10, 1988 the Association will have a reception from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Texas Ballroom (C&D) of the Hyatt Regency, 815 Main Street.
