Laboratory Practice is a hands-on practical grouping of units. The techniques for safe and accurate laboratory/fieldwork work will be demonstrated and then practiced, your communications skills both written and spoken will be enhanced and the importance of team skills will be emphasised.
The class will also form the beginning of your chemical calculation studies. You will undertake work on risk evaluation and hazard reduction. Wherever possible the samples analysed will be related to the course being studied.
Laboratory Practice contributes to the following units on of the following units depending on the Course enrolled. Some units have been timetabled over two Semesters in other subjects such as Instrumentation and Applied Computing. These units are marked below with an *.

The unit, HLTFA301C Apply First Aid is available in both courses. You are able to complete this unit by arrangement with the Health Sciences Section. Your teacher will speak with you regarding how to arrange to complete the Unit.
Both groups are undertaking very similar units. All Students will also be required to attend the Thursday fieldwork sessions, one a month for the entire year (ten in total). These fieldwork sessions will take the place of all your scheduled Thursday classes. Attendance will also be required at the end of year Diploma students seminars. (These are usually held in the last week of Semester 2).
In order to participate in the laboratory session the following are required:
Protective safety glasses (if your wear prescription lenses these may suffice if they form a good cover on the face and eyes.) ( Sunglasses/ coloured lenses are NOT permitted)
Closed in footwear that covers most of the foot. (Joggers are perfect)
A protective laboratory coat

ASSESSMENT
Assessment is ongoing and in many cases holistic. This means that your attendance at all classes is important.
