FINANCAL HIGHLIGIITS . Duringfiscalyear 2002,the cashbalanceincreasedby $0.4 million,largelydueto a tuitionincreaseand controlledspending. In the previousfiscal year, our cash balancewas utilizedto retire$11.3millionof long-termdebt. This debt retirement resultedin the Universityhavingthe lowest per-studentdebt within the State of publicuniversities. Michigan's o The University strengthened its financialpositionduringthe fiscalyear endedJune 30, 2002,despitea $1.4 millionmarketdevaluation of its investments.Combined net assets increased$2.7 million,or 1.5 percentfrom the previousyear. This increasewas due to an overallincreasein tuitionandfees,combinedwitha planned decreasein spending.
