Laboratory Skills | TVET | 2012 ASSESSMENT DETAILS LABORATORY WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY (WHS) Laboratory WHS is a compulsory unit incorporated within Laboratory Practice focusing on WHS issues within the context of a science laboratory. Event 1 – Major Assignment Consists of a take home assignment covering topics relevant to safety in the laboratory. This will be due for submission on 19 June 2012. Event 2 – Laboratory WHS Quiz Closed book assessment of laboratory WHS issues covered throughout semester 1. LABORATORY PRACTICE Event 1 – Exams There will be TWO (2) practical exams and TWO (2) theory exams throughout the year, assessing important aspects of this subject. These are scheduled in the 2012 program below. Event 2 – Task Completion Students are encouraged to undertake and complete ALL programmed laboratory tasks. Your progress during each entire laboratory task will be closely monitored and recorded as competent, upon satisfactory completion of all task aspects, including: written record of prework, observations, results, calculations and task questions as they are applicable to the task. A 5 min Risk Assessment must also be completed prior to undertaking every task. 1 Assessment will be ongoing throughout the entire year. Formal assessment events are described above. Further observations of your performance in the laboratory, or supporting information will comprise aspects of your informal assessment. These will also be recorded as part of your teacher’s markbook. Informal assessment details may include, but not be limited to: Preparedness for the task (you will receive a practical timetable). Ability to follow procedures within a laboratory context with efficiency and competence. Safety awareness in the laboratory. General tidiness of your work area, during and at the end of the class. Completion and / or submission of supplementary worksheets and assignments as they are issued. NECESSARY RESOURCES: Texts: 1. PRACTICAL LABORATORY SKILLS (Krajniak, Barker, Fullick) 2.
