NWiS Organizational Meeting Minutes
October 11th, 2011
1. Budget update (Felicia) $803.90
2. TSRI community updates
a. SoF and Career services – Ryan
o Halloween Party @ the Hyatt $10 TRSI employee, $15 for guest
o Elections are happening for SOF and NWiS Liaison position is open
o 5@5 Event starting Oct 21 in Beckman (5 min chalk talk or 3-5 slide show followed by food and drinks)
o Industry Bridge program is currently full
o Ben Pratt will be featured on Nov 1 for alumni talk @ 4pm in the faculty club
o Transition to Industry (sponsored by ACS) will be trying to host another training course annually
o Lab Management Training March 2-3 (fri/sat) total of 7 sessions aimed towards PostDoc’s who are interested
in management in an academic setting
o ** Maricella suggested to create a recruit/manage diversity in lab board
b. SD AWIS chapter – Andrea
o AWIS Open house Oct 25 @ 5:30pm
4. Review of recent events
a. Visualizing science coffee hour – How did it go? How many attended? Things that worked and didn’t work?
o Went very well about 15ppl
o Maybe next time stress the challenge of communicating real science to the lei person, science and media and
tangent of career options
5. Upcoming fall quarter events (November-December)
a. Coffee hours
i. Felicia ok to continue with coffee? Laurie for snacks?
ii. November – Science Writing with Lynn Freidman (Emily)
Nov 7
- how do we best relate/distinguish this content from the October coffee hour?
iii. December – NWiS potluck?
iv. Rachel Scatizzi – property rights (Andrea)
o Jack said she specializes in family law (everything from divorce to adoption and real estate)
o is very interested in Q&A session with NWiS
o possibly Jan 9, Feb. 6, or March 5 date to host
o maybe joint coffee hour with financial advisor
o NO December coffee hour, we will begin in Jan
b. Other upcoming events
i. Female Faculty Lecture series with Bridget Carragher (Andrea)
o it will probably be from 3:30-4:30p and we will change the venue to keep within budget December
ii. New Faculty Happy hour (Laurie/Andrea)

6. Fundraising
i. Industry happy hour (Lyn’Al)
- status? Lessons learned?
o Will not be happening, wasn’t able to secure any funding
o Contacted 15 companies and the responses were: “No, maybe next time, we just sponsored something, already
sponsoring something this month, and no answer”
Maybe we could contact companies during a different time of the year (taking fiscal year or quarters into
consideration?)
o Catch them at the beginning or the year, instead of the end, since a few companies had some really bad quarters
 Fundraising
o Maybe get in contact with the girls at Sanford Burnham for event colabo
o Mommy Market
o Pizza Night
o Andrea will be asking Jamie for more funding
 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
o Walk will be Nov 12 @ Balboa Park (6th and Laurel)
o Registration is @7:30am, walk begins 8:00am for a 1.5 mile walk

o Stalled, Katie is still trying to work with Mike, but it probably won’t happen late winter or next year, since he is
still transitioning into his position
