Advising Issue: This is the advising issue of
DeaNotes. In addition to absorbing the important advising tips that follow, please use this article to remind you to grab your copy of the
Schliecker/Aiello Advising Handbook , your copy of the Gordon Catalog , and to take a liberal dose of patience and wisdom as you prepare for one of the most important tasks of the semester. [Electronic copy of the Schliecker/Aiello Advising Handbook is available at the Academic Affairs website.]
Reinstatement Clarification: One of the critical periods in the academic calendar each semester is the attendance verification date (10 days after classes start in Fall and Spring; 5 days after classes start in summer). On the verification date, faculty members record whether students have yet attended class. If the faculty member does not confirm that the student has attended class, the student is dropped from the class.
After having been dropped from class, the student may seek reinstatement. Beginning in Summer
2010 students will present to faculty members a new form that reminds both student and faculty member that reinstatement is not automatic.
Indeed, the form reminds the faculty member that in signing the reinstatement form, the faculty is affirming that:
1.
The student has finally attended a class
meeting.
2.
The student has documented a legitimate reason for their previous non-attendance.
3.
The faculty member believes there is a reasonable chance that the student will be able to be successful in the class despite earlier absences.
Vol. II, No. 8
If the instructor signs the form, the student must then carry it to the business office for additional processing.
Becoming an On-Line Instructor: Occasionally we receive inquiries from faculty members who desire to develop and teach a Gordon course in an on-line format. The distance education committee has outlined the following steps toward that goal:
•
Obtain permission from division chair and the Dean of the College.
•
Review with the division chair specific steps to be taken to prepare for the online teaching experience.
•
Complete any recommended training courses and workshops
•
Determine a target date for offering the first section of the course.
•
Provide opportunity for the Chair of the
Distance Education committee and the
Division Chair (or designate) to review and comment on the course during the first semester it is offered.
At the present time, the Office of Academic Affairs is ensuring that faculty members have resources to obtain training before wading into “on-line” waters.

Policies for distance education at Gordon College, go to web site: http://www.gdn.edu/departments/academicaffairs/in dex.asp
Critical Advising Facts -- Question: For a student being advised in your area, what is the single critical thing the advisor must remember?
DEANotes is a quasi-monthly publication of Academic Affairs
Answers from the Division Chairs:
Baskin on Communication: Students with LS
Reading and/or English requirements may take
COMM 1500, but not 1110.
Baskin on Foreign Language: Most young students who passed two full years of a foreign language in high school should enroll in 1002 rather than 1001.
Baskin on Learning Support: Remember that
GFYE 097 is the course that will be required of all new students with learning support requirements in all three areas.
Baskin on Literature: While students are permitted to take a literature course after having earned a C or better in ENGL 1101, they would do better to wait until after they have done the same in
1102, as the research component in that course will help them with their lit course writing.
Baskin on Music: New students wanting to be music majors must check out the requirements for becoming a music major, which are stated on the
Music web page.
Burstein on Business: Students should complete their area A math requirement with MATH 1111 or
MATH 1113 (not MATH 1001) as early as possible and should see the Business/Social Science administrative office if they have difficulty getting a section.
Burstein on History: HIST 1121 and HIST 1122 can be taken individually, in either order or one without the other, as can HIST 2111 and HIST
2112, with one of each required for Area E.
Burstein on Psychology : PSYC 2103 can be taken without prerequisite but does not satisfy an Area E requirement.
Cranford on Nursing: All students with the exception of those with a 450 Math SAT or 19 ACT score will be required to take BIOL 1111 or CHEM
1151 as a prerequisite to BIOL 2210. If the student has satisfactorily completed either of these courses previously, this will satisfy the requirement.
Cranford on Physical Education: Beginning with the Fall 2010 catalog, no PHED class (including
PHED 1001 Health and Wellness and PHED 1010
Physical Fitness) can be used to satisfy Area B requirements. All PHED courses, with the exception of PHED 1040 (for Physical Education majors) can only be used to satisfy Area G.
Gahr on Astronomy: Students must have completed a College level math class (above
MATH 0099) before taking any Astronomy class unless their SAT Math score is 460 or higher.
Gahr on Biology: It is more important for majors to take CHEM 1211K/1212K than BIOL
1107K/1108K in the first year, so they are prepared for CHEM 2401K.
Gahr on Chemistry: Unlike other majors, the core for pre-Pharmacy takes 3 years to complete and students need to take CHEM 1211 during their first semester if they want to get out in time. The average GPA of students who have been accepted to pharmacy school is 3.4.
Gahr on Computer Science: Make sure majors take a math course (MATH 1111 or higher) 1 st semester of enrollment.
Gahr on Engineering: Introduction to Engineering is offered in the fall, and pre-calculus is a pre/co requisite for the course: use Summer to take necessary mathematics. Any student interested in the RETP (Regents Engineering Transfer Program) should see Dr. Marwan Zabdawi for advisement.
Gahr on Learning Support Math: Please be sure that your advisees are registered for their required
Learning Support course/s before they leave campus in May.
Gahr on Math: Make sure majors take a math course (MATH 1111 or higher) 1 st
semester of enrollment.
Gahr on Physics: If a student is planning on taking
PHYS 2211 in Fall 2010 they must have completed
MATH 1501 (Calculus I) by the end of Summer
Calculus) this semester should plan on taking
MATH 1501 over summer semester. This holds true for students in engineering as well.

O’Sullivan on Early Childhood and Middle
Grades Education: Students with these majors
MUST attend one of our group advising sessions.
These sessions are scheduled as follows: Thursday,
March 25 at 6 pm in Russell, 211; Monday, March
29 at 2 pm in Russell 211; or Wednesday, March 31 at 2 pm in Russell 208. Advisors who advise early childhood or middle grades students are also welcome, of course, to attend any of these sessions.
O’Sullivan on Secondary Education: Secondary majors must now follow the major of the area they plan to teach (for example, English teachers follow an English major). This means that students who plan to become secondary teachers should change to an advisor in the major, though these students are welcome to come and listen to any of the group advising sessions listed above.
