Advising Note - Scholarships at Gordon College:
Students occasionally ask advisors about the
availability of scholarships at Gordon College.
Information can be found on the website at
http://www.gdn.edu/fndscholarships/
Here are a few summary observations:
• The deadline is March 1 each year for the
following academic year.
• The application can be downloaded from
our website; hard copies are distributed in
the admissions office.
• Students complete one form—they do not
apply for individual scholarships though
we do have a listing of scholarships with
the criteria for each.
• After the applications are matched with
the criteria of the scholarships, a faculty
committee reads and ranks the
scholarships and then they meet to make
the awards.
• Last April we awarded approximately
120 scholarships.
Important Fodder for Syllabi: It has been brought to
our attention that some faculty ask students to leave
their belongings (book bags, coats, purses, etc) at the
front of the classroom on test days. Though this
practice may be a wise move to reduce the likelihood
of cheating, it does create an opportunity for someone
to snatch an expensive cell phone or such from a book
bag as they leave the classroom. If you intend to use
the “belongings at the front of the classroom” strategy,
please include the following note in your written
syllabus:
• You will be asked to leave books and other
personal items at front of room during tests.
• For that reason, you may want to leave
expensive electronic devices and other
valuable articles in cars or at home.
• The instructor will remain in the classroom
during the test, but he or she cannot
guarantee the safety of easily pocketed items.
Including this information in the syllabus will reduce
the liability of the instructor and the college should
expensive items go missing.
January Faculty Meeting: The faculty will assemble
at 2:00 pm in NURS 123 on January 25, 2012 for the
its first meeting following the arrival of President Max
Burns. Agenda is still flux but it will likely include:
• Consideration of Several Items from the Faculty
Senate
• Report from VP Fruitticher on the budget and
financial health of the college
• Report from VP Chamberlain on a number of
Student Affairs issues
• Comments from President Burns
• Details from Academic Affairs

“Nice to hear” . . . from Dr. Susan Glenn: One of
our former students who transferred to Southern
Polytechnic State University reports that he is doing
quite well, that he felt well prepared in both Computer
Science and Math for the rigorous courses offered at
SPSU. Dr. Glenn also tells us that right now we have
at least six CS students up at SPSU, and they are all
succeeding.
Program completion at GC@FVSU: Today,
Dr. Wheeler and I had the pleasure of handing out
completion certificates to 16 students who will
complete 30 or more hours in our program this term on
the Fort Valley State University campus. We were
inspired by the dedication and hard work these

students have put into their academic work, some of
them against considerable odds. These students plan
to transfer to FVSU and several other schools, and I
am pleased to say that a few will continue with us at
Gordon.

KWiSE Meeting in Los Angeles, CA on Oct 15, 2011.
This meeting was dedicated to graduate and
undergraduate students in the southern California area
for mentoring, networking and research presentation
opportunities. The KWiSE 7th Annual Meeting was
sponsored by Korean-American Scientists and
Engineers Association (KSEA) and Korean Federation
of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST). Dr.
Lee currently is establishing the foundation of KWiSE
in Georgia and southeast region.

We are very excited about the newest addition to our
SSC staff. Maria Cezus joined us around mid-term as
a reading tutor and study skills advisor. Although we
expect that most of her business will come from the
Learning Support classes, Maria would like to
emphasize that she can also help students from
college-level classes read more effectively. In
addition, Maria is an excellent resource for students
who need help with organizing study plans and honing
study skills. In the Spring 2012 semester, Maria will
be working on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10AM3PM. Please let your students know about this
valuable new SSC resource.
Office. Gordon is now Nationally Accredited in
Teacher Education. ☺
The Division, even though it is the smallest of all the
Divisions, was proud to finish second in the faculty
food drive for Thanksgiving. A real spirit generator
for the Division.
Dr. John Barnard was awarded a faculty
Development Grant to support his research.
Dr. Mike Mahan had a paper accepted for
presentation at the Georgia Science Teachers
Association in February, 2012. The paper covers the
topic of: “Connecting AYP to the content in the
Classroom”
Dr. Mike Mahan has been asked to join a Task Force
of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission
(GaPSC) on Science Education. The task Force will
look at the following:
1. The feasibility of preparing science
educators to teach multiple science subjects.
2. The needs of Georgia School Districts as
they relate to science teachers.
3. The preferences of those who hire science
educators with regard to content area
preparation.
The entire Division is excited about the pace of
construction on Smith Hall. We see changes
happening almost daily.

GC@FVSU Professional Development Students get
ready for success!
With just over a week to go, the SSC is on its way to
posting record numbers. Despite the decrease in
enrollment this Fall, we have already surpassed 16,000
log-ins in a semester for the very first time. We have
also logged over 3,200 one-on-one tutoring sessions
this Fall—the first semester we have passed the 3,000session level. Thanks to everybody for all your
support!

Synopsis: Amanda Wingfield, "a little woman of great
vitality clinging frantically to another time and place,"
shares a St. Louis tenement apartment with her adult
children, Laura and Tom. Laura is a young woman
crippled from a childhood illness and from an

contact with reality." Tom is a poetic, frustrated son
who works at a mindless warehouse job, supporting
his family after his father left home for good.
Together, despite their extraordinary dysfunction, they
nearly find happiness in this life.
