Only 20 contacts from target class (section A), or 26% of all contacts. 15 contacts from Section B, or 19.4% of all contacts. 42 contacts from Section C, or 54.5% of all contacts. Avg. number of sessions per student: 3.67 (lowest among all SI sections this semester) SI students with mid-term F’s: 2 (9.5% of total students) ABCD rate of SI students with mid-term F’s: 2/2, or 100% 2 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction • Red numbers in the table below indicate clearly lower than anticipated performance (≥ 2) Anticipated Grade Distribution Anticipated Final Grade Distribution is derived by making the following assumptions: • Green numbers in the table below indicated clearly higher than anticipated performance (≥ 2) • The total population under review = 89 • 68 of the 89 students (76%) did not attend SI (the “Non-SI” group) • Thus, green numbers in the A/B/C lines are positive; red numbers in the D/F/ WF/W lines are positive. • 21 of the 89 students (24%) did attend SI at least once (the “SI” group) In this analysis, the SI group slightly outperformed its expectations. The SI group outperformed expectations on both the C and the D lines. • Thus, the Non-SI group would be expected to receive 76% of the A’s, 76% of the B’s, 76% of the C’s, and so on • The SI group would be expected to receive 24% of the A’s, 24% of the B’s, 24% of the C’s, and so on Grade Raw Number Anticipated Grade Distribution of NonSI Students (76%) Actual Grade Distribution of Non-SI Students Anticipated Final Grade Distribution of SI Students (24%) Actual Final Grade Distribution of SI Students A 23 17 17 6 6 B 36 27 27 9 9 C 16 12 10 4 6 D 7 5 7 2 0 F/WF 3 2 3 1 0 W 4 3 4 1 0 TOTAL 89 3 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction Spring 2012 SI Results vs. Spring 2011 Non-SI Results A B C D F/WF W 23 36 16 7 3 4 Spring 2011 24 non-SI classes (n=60) 13 10 3 3 7 SI % 25.8% 40.4% 17.9% 7.8% 3.3% 4.4% Non-SI % 40% 21.6% 16.7% 5.0% 5.0% 11.7% Total for All Classes (n=100) 47 49 26 10 6 11 Spring 2012 SI Classes (n=89) ABC Pass Rates SI Section: 84.2% (75/89) Non-SI: 78.3% (47/60) ABCD Pass Rates SI Section: 92.1% (82/89) Non-SI: 83.3% (50/60) Class GPA (Excluding Ws) SI Section: 2.81 Non-SI: 2.98 4 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction • Red numbers in the table below indicate clearly lower than anticipated performance (≥ 2) Anticipated Grade Distribution, Spring 2012 SI Sections vs. Spring 2011 Non-SI Sections Anticipated Final Grade Distribution is derived by making the following assumptions: • The total population under review = 149 • Green numbers in the table below indicated clearly higher than anticipated performance (≥ 2) • 60 of the 149 students (40%) were enrolled in ACCT 2101 sections not supported by SI (the “Non-SI” group) • Thus, green numbers in the A/B/C lines are positive; red numbers in the D/F/ WF/W lines are positive • 89 of the 149 students (60%) were enrolled in ACCT 2101 sections supported by SI (the “SI” group) In the sections-to-sections analysis, we see some interesting results. The students in the SI sections underperformed on the A line, but over-performed on the B line. • Thus, the Non-SI group would be expected to receive 40% of the A’s, 40% of the B’s, 40% of the C’s, and so on The students in the SI sections also over-performed on the W line, with significantly fewer W’s than expected. • The SI group would be expected to receive 60% of the A’s, 60% of the B’s, 60% of the C’s, and so on Grade Raw Number Anticipated Grade Distribution of NonSI Students (40%) A 47 19 Actual Grade Distribution of Non-SI Students Anticipated Final Grade Distribution of SI Students (60%) Actual Final Grade Distribution of SI Students 24 28 23 B 49 20 13 29 36 C 26 10 10 16 16 D 10 4 3 6 7 F/WF 6 2 3 4 3 W 11 4 7 7 4 TOTAL 189 5 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction Summary I’m not sure that SI had much of an impact on ACCT 2101. We do see a higher ABC rate for SI students vs. Non-SI: 100% vs. 79.1%, or an improvement of 26%. Similarly, SI students earned a class GPA of about .25 higher than their non-SI counterparts. There are many variables that come into play when comparing classes from different se- 6 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction mesters. We do see a slightly higher ABC rate in the Spring 2012 SI sections. However, the class GPA for the Non-SI group was slightly higher than the GPA for the SI group. We had fewer W’s than anticipated in the SI group, and more W’s than expected for the Non-SI group. This is consistent with nationwide SI data that suggests SI does help completion rates. On the other hand, the SI group earned fewer F/WF’s than anticipated (-2). • The SI group would be expected to receive 60% of the A’s, 60% of the B’s, 60% of the C’s, and so on These results are consistent with SI data collected nationwide over the past several decades. • Red numbers in the table below indicate clearly lower than anticipated performance Grade Raw Number Anticipated Grade Distribution of Non-SI Students (40%) Actual Grade Distribution of Non-SI Students Anticipated Final Grade Distribution of SI Students (60%) Actual Final Grade Distribution of SI Students A 7 3 3 4 4 B 8 3 2 5 6 C 8 3 2 5 6 D 4 2 2 2 2 F/WF 3 1 3 2 0 W 0 N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL 30 8 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction SI Results vs. Non-SI Results. Similarly, students who attended SI earned a class GPA nearly a grade higher than their non-SI classmates (2.67 vs. 1.75). Comparison Results These results were inconclusive. The SI class had a slightly higher ABC rate than the non-SI class: 80% to 72%, or a n 11% improvement. However, the SI class had a slightly lower ABCD rate than the Non-SI class. There were over twice as many A’s in the SI class, and an overall GPA about one-tenth of one point higher than the non-SI class. Variation in ability from section to section should be taken into account. 11 Student Success Center Supplemental Instruction Fall 2012 HIST 1122 A: Western Civilization, 3 Sections Fall 2012 SI (CRN’s 745, 750, and 751) Fall 2010 Non-SI (CRN’s 566, 569, and 573) ABC Rate 51% (40/79) 41.4% (34/82) ABCD Rate 63.2% (50/79) 48.7% (40/82) Non-Complete Rate (WF + W) 20.2% (16/79) 42.6% (35/82) % A’s 7.5% (6/79) 6% (5/82) % B’s 16.4% (13/79) 18.2% (15/82) % C’s 26.5% (21/79) 17% (14/82) % D’s 11.3% (9/79) 7.3% (6/82) % F’s 17.7% (14/79) 8.5% (7/82) Participation ABCD Rates Unduplicated Attendees: 31 ABCD rate of students who attended at least one SI session: 80.6% (25/31) Percentage of Total Students: 39.2% (31/79) Total Visits: 207 ABCD rate of students who did not attend SI: 52.8%(25/48) Average Visits/Student: 6.6 Improvement: 56.4% Most Visits, One Student: 22 ABCD rate for all of Dr. Winters’s students: 63.2%(50/79) ABC Rates ABC rate of students who attended at least one SI session: 67.7% (21/31) Improvement: 27.5% Non-Complete Rates ABC rate of students who did not attend SI: 39.5%(19/48) Non-Complete Rate (W + WF), at least 1 SI session: 6.4%(2/31) Improvement: 71.3% Non-Complete Rate for all of Dr. Winters’s students: 21.5% (17/79) ABC rate for all of Dr. Winters’s Students: 51% (40/79) Improvement: 32.7% Improvement: 70.2% Students with 1-3 Visits # Although we did not get the remarkable “whole class” impact that we enjoyed in Fall 2012, the pass rates for SI students were significantly higher than those for non-SI students, and the noncomplete rate (W + WF) for SI students was much lower. The most obvious difference between Fall and Spring was attendance, which was much stronger in Fall. This is interesting because we had the same SI Leader working with the same faculty member, who was extremely enthusiastic about the program, and roughly the same enrollment (80 students in Fall 2012 vs. 76 students in Spring 2013). We see a 20% improvement in the ABC rate over the Spring 2011 non-SI sections of the same class with the same instructor. In particular, we have a huge increase in the A rate. Also, within this semester’s students, the SI students outperformed the non-SI students by a large margin. There were some strange results in this SI, however. We had the highest average number of visits per student for all our SI sections (10.9) and the highest average number of visits per student for students with more than 10 visits (a spectacular 24.6). However, we also had the lowest ABC rate for SI students with 10+ visits (60%). There were two “spectacular failures,” with students who averaged 18 SI visits failing the class. We had the same SI Leader working with the same faculty member for the second semester in a row; however, it is difficult to compare results because this semester, the faculty member taught only one section of the class, when in Fall 2012 he taught 3 sections. Thus, while attendance as a percentage of the overall class roll was UP versus last Fall, overall raw numbers were (obviously) down. We see a 20% improvement in the ABC rate over the Spring 2011 non-SI sections of the same class with the same instructor. In particular, we have a huge increase in the A rate. Also, within this semester’s students, the SI students outperformed the non-SI students by a large margin.
