Elena was nervous. She put on her shorts, white t-shirt and sports shoes. She looked at the clock. It was 3.30. She had to go. Fifteen minutes later she was waiting beside the other girls. She heard the shot and ran as fast as she could. There were thousands of people shouting. Elena tried to concentrate even more. Only 50 metres left, but it was difficult to breathe. There was one person in front of her. Her legs were hurting but she had to keep running. Suddenly it was all over! She had won the race! The music began as Elena walked up the steps. The photographers asked her to smile as she was presented with the gold medal in the Olympic Games. She had spent five years preparing herself for this moment. Day after day, she had got up early and had worked at the gym before going to the University. Was it worth it? Absolutely! © UCLES 2012 3035/11/O/N/12 4 BLANK PAGE Permission to reproduce items where third-party owned material protected by copyright is included has been sought and cleared where possible.
