This course focuses on best care, welfare and handling of beef, sheep, swine, dairy, equine and poultry. This hands-on class focuses on the development of skills associated with handling and moving healthy and compromised livestock in respect to human and animal welfare. This is a 2 credit class that starts on Monday March 7th through May 5th and meets on Mondays from 2:10-5:00pm and Fridays from 12:10-2:00pm and is limited to students with little to no livestock experience. Ice cream mixing on Monday from 8-4 in meat lab room 163 Equestrian Club § Like us on Facebook! 3 ISU Undergraduate Animal Science Newsletter February 29, 2016 Scholarships Targeting Excellence Scholarship Scholarships will be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an agricultural curriculum at an institution that offers degrees in agriculture. A total of $120,000 will be awarded in 2016 from the applications that are submitted. Scholarship amounts will be based on the program in which the student is enrolled: $1,000 for 2-year programs, $2,000 for 4-year programs, and $3,000 for graduate programs. Preference will be given to students who attend schools in regions where fundraising events were held in 2015. The preference regions for 2016 awards are Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Application deadline: March 15, 2016. The organization will announce award winners on May 1, 2016, and checks will be mailed on September 1, 2016, after the students submit their enrollment verification. Carver Scholarship Twenty awards of $5,200 each (renewable for one year) will be awarded for the 2016-17 academic year. Requirements: § Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time § Graduate or accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for 5 years § Junior classification in Fall 2016 § Minimum GPA of 2.80 § Demonstrate financial need on basis of the FAFSA (filed by March 1st) Application Deadline: April 1st. IFAA Winner’s Circle Scholarship College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock and agricultural projects and current undergraduate students may apply for scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA). Applicants must major in animal science or a curriculum in agriculture or human sciences that is related to the agriculture industry. Winners will be announced during the 2016 Iowa State Fair annual 4-H/FFA Sale of Champions on Saturday, August 20th, an event sponsored by IFAA. The money will be awarded for fall semester upon proof of enrollment. National Dairy Shrine Scholarships There are multiple scholarships available through this program, including five from the National Dairy Shrine/Dairy Management, Inc. Milk Marketing-Dairy Products; five from the National Dairy Shrine/Dairy Management, Inc. Education & Communication Scholarships; two from NDS/McCullough; and MORE! Internship is paid with reimbursement for mileage and expenses. When: June to mid-late August Applicants must live or attend college in IA, IL, MN, ND, SD, MO, KS, OK, AR, or NE and be at least 18 years of age. They should also have an interest in communication, marketing, and public relations with the dairy industry. Interns will be responsible for writing of media pieces, developing promotional materials, writing for the MDA and Midwest Dairy News, assisting with many events including June Dairy month activities and more. We use all A.I for our breeding, and farrow 100 head every 7 weeks. There will be some general farm maintenance jobs. Very flexible work hours to work around class schedules. One is a beef cattle (Belted Galloway) emphasis, and the other is on growing vegetables at the Erickson Fields Preserve.
