Participants are selected based on industry and leadership involvement, career goal and articulation of the benefit of the program to their career development. This opportunity is currently available to full-time students pursuing a 4-year degree with intentions on entering the workforce in an agricultural related profession. Sponsorship includes program registration and materials, lodging, travel and meals throughout the Institute. Travel to the Institute, including parking and ground transportation is not included. Center for Environmental Farming Systems 2016 Apprenticeship Program CEFS is seeking highly-motivated individuals to participate in hands-on work and study programs showcasing sustainable agriculture. Wide variety of experiences, including: organic grain/vegetable production, swine, beef, and dairy production, and small farm production. Very rigorous and highly competitive program. Apprentices receive a stipend of $200 per week. Ice cream mixing on Monday from 8-4 in meat lab room 163 Equestrian Club § Like us on Facebook! 3 ISU Undergraduate Animal Science Newsletter February 1, 2016 Animal Science Undergraduate Updates Iowa Beef Expo Volunteers Needed The directors of the livestock judging contest at the Iowa Beef Expo are asking for some Block and Bridle members to help out at the contest on Sunday February 14th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in the Livestock Pavilion. They are in need of several volunteers who have experience showing cattle that can help out with leading the cattle as well as several volunteers to help with running the contest who don't need to have beef cattle experience. This event's success depends upon our participation so please only sign up if you are sure that you can attend. If interested, please sign up here. Judges Needed for the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa The State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) is a two-day event at Hilton Coliseum. This is a very large precollegiate student research competition for our state and we need your help! There is a Senior High Event in combination with the Iowa FFA Agriscience Fair held on THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2016. The Junior High Event will be held on FRIDAY APRIL 1, 2016. When: Wednesday, February 3, 12:30 – 1:30 PM Where: 2004 Black Engineering To confirm attendance, please RSVP with Diana Sloan at dsloan@iastate.edu. 4 ISU Undergraduate Animal Science Newsletter February 1, 2016 Scholarships Department of Animal Science Scholarships for Undergraduates Requirements: § Enrollment as a full-time student (12 or more credits) in the Department of Animal Science for full academic year 2016-17. § Animal Science or Dairy Science MUST be your PRIMARY MAJOR to qualify for these scholarships. § Minimum Requirement: GPA of 2.0 or above. (Student must not be on academic probation.) Some scholarships require higher GPAs. § For scholarships that state a student may qualify for the scholarship in succeeding years, the student must reapply for the scholarship each year. Students who seek to attend veterinary or graduate school have an emphasis on swine. Targeting Excellence Scholarship Scholarships will be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an agricultural curriculum at an institution that offers degrees in agriculture. A total of $120,000 will be awarded in 2016 from the applications that are submitted. Scholarship amounts will be based on the program in which the student is enrolled: $1,000 for 2-year programs, $2,000 for 4-year programs, and $3,000 for graduate programs. Preference will be given to students who attend schools in regions where fundraising events were held in 2015. The preference regions for 2016 awards are Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Application deadline: March 15, 2016. The organization will announce award winners on May 1, 2016, and checks will be mailed on September 1, 2016, after the students submit their enrollment verification. Quality Assurance Technician – Diamond V Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa The QA Technician is responsible for ensuring Diamond V products adhere to Quality Assurance and Regulatory guidelines. The Technician routinely analyzes samples from throughout the manufacturing process. The QA Technician will assist in identifying corrective actions and will follow-up by monitoring new results. The QA Technician also works on special projects to support optimization of the manufacturing process, and helps to ensure quality is not affected by the changes.
