NASA Quarterly UVIS Q2 - 2012 (Feb - Apr 2012) Quarterly 1 <date> UVIS: Science Highlight Quarterly 2 <date> UVIS: Science Highlights • In Bonnie Meinke's thesis, she is able to match the size distribution of 'kittens' in Saturn's F ring with a model that increases accretion where Prometheus causes ring particle streamlines to crowd. Quarterly 3 <date> UVIS: Accomplishments • Science Highlights (from this quarter: Feb-Apr 2012) – Bradley designed a prime UVIS spectroscopic observation for FUV ring science. The observation is Rev 173 during October, 2012 and the first portion of the observation is designed to provide a measurement of off axis light from the dayside of Saturn to characterize the background for subtraction from rings observations. The second portion of the observation will consist of pointing the field of view radially from the C through the A ring behind the terminator of the planet, which will result in minimizing unwanted Saturn shine on the rings. The pixel size projected in the ring plane is ~ 1000 km. The field of view will move inward by ~ 333 km twice during the observation to maximize spatial sampling for this geometry. – Quarterly Bradley generated several hundred data cubes for Titan observations to be used by team member Joe Ajello for Titan atmospheric investigations. Both FUV and EUV data cubes were created that included calibrated data and geometrical variables. 4 <date> UVIS: Accomplishments • Publications – Published this quarter – In press (Went into press Feb - Apr ‘12 and also includes still in press from earlier quarters) – Submitted (Submitted Feb - Apr ‘12 and also includes submitted earlier and still in review) – Published 2012 to date (since Nov. 2011) – Published entire mission 1 1 7 7 145 • Presentations at scientific conferences (Feb - Apr 2012) – – – – 2 papers at LPSC, The Woodlands, TX, March 2012 (Hendrix, Esposito) 1 paper at MAPS Workshop, Cologne, March, 2012 (Radioti) 1 paper at Titan Through Time 2, Greenbelt, MD, April, 2012 (Yung) 1 paper at EGU, Vienna, Austria, April, 2012 (Esposito) • Public Outreach and Press Activities (Feb - Apr 2012) – – – 1: public talk 0 : press release 1: press conferences (phone interviews) • Awards (Feb - Apr 2012) – At the EGU awarded the Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Young Scientists to Aikaterini Radioti for her remarkable work in the field of auroral dynamics of Jupiter and Saturn, to which she contributed with original ideas based on combined studies of remote auroral and in‐situ magnetospheric data. – Miodrag Sremcevic has been awarded a three-year grant for research on"Saturn's B ring objects" in Cassini UVIS and ISS data.
