Vista for Veterans at the SBDC! VISTA Member Michael McCarty Helps Veterans Transition to Civilian Life UT Austin AmeriCorps VISTA member Michael McCarty has been working with the Prairie View A&M University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to implement a pilot veteran entrepreneurship program to help U.S. military veterans successfully transition back into civilian life. This new program represents the first veteran’s entrepreneurship program within an SBDC in Texas in response to President Obama’s emphasis on providing employment assistance to veterans. Since the start of the program in February, McCarty has provided services to 12 new veteran entrepreneurs. He has also been instrumental in creating a partnership with PeopleVet (a program designed to assist veterans with small business ownership) to teach a six-week business training program specifically for veterans starting in June. Veterans who complete the PeopleVET program will qualify for a $20,000 loan to help them start or expand their businesses. As a result of McCarty’s work, more veterans within the community are starting to inquire about how they can participate in this new program. Call our office today to schedule an appointment with Mr. McCarty! Getting HUB Certified! As you may already know, one of the services we off here at the PVAMU SBDC is guiding our clients through the process of becoming HUB Certified. Why do we feature this offer? Here are some important facts you may not have known as a small business owner. You may fall under one or all categories: HUB certification is free of charge. Certification is valid for 4 years, provided that business continues to meet the eligibility requirements*. Business is registered on the Comptroller’s Web-based HUB Directory. State agencies use the HUB Directory in conjunction with the Comptroller’s Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL) to solicit bids from certified HUBs for state purchasing and public works contracts. Prime contractors also use the HUB Directory to identify HUBs to whom they will send notification of their subcontracting opportunities. Increased exposure to the general public, as well as, other entities who have a supplier diversity program and are searching for minority and woman-owned businesses. Don’t delay.
