As a noun, it indicates that something is different. As a verb it moves us to be different. It coils for action and leaves us excited ,unsettled and insecure. Without it, we stagnate, but the transformation is painful. While construction is changing the face of the college, new programs ore changing the scope of the Fashion Deportment. The Fashion Deportment will soon be moving to new quarters. It is still months away, but we think about it doily. We dream about the new space and what beautiful surroundings we'll hove. We think about how much we've changed since moving out of H Building where we will soon be returning. Our programs ore stronger than ever. The new Textile Certificate invites artists to commit themselves to their own interests, the Fiber entrepreneur invites the creative person to find his/her passion and create a new business. Entrepreneurship is now a reality housed in Studio V, our new Merchandising Lob, a retail outlet that currently represents over l 00 student and community artists and artisans. Fashion merchandising students developed and built this store and some of the products offered for sole come from design courses that produce experimental pieces. It con be done. We've done it! The creative spirit is stronger than ever. Change also means that sometimes we hove to soy good-bye. Through retirement, we hove lost some special people. But such is the process of change. 4 It will continue. Through change, we've invited new faculty to join us. The family grows .... and changes. Change is a big word and con toke us anywhere. So, the dreams that we shore for this deportment ore becoming reality, and the transformation is outstanding. Really!! Acknowledgements This is now the fifth yearbook created by the Fashion Deportment, its' faculty, staff, and students. The book. produced from a different perspective each year, illustrates the growth of this project and the port we ploy in its' production. Five years ago, we began working with a wonderful group of people who continue to guide, direct, and lead us to success. Once again, our sincere thanks to the Graphic Arts Program Coordinator, Potty Bruner, who continues to be a mentor. To Marlene Koper, whose thoughtful direction and graphic design skills hove token this book to a new level. To Angelino Bonillo, Eppi Perez, and Abe Mendez, whose determination brought this to life. We miss you. 5 FAS 100 Industrial Sewing Methods This course introduces the use and care of industrial sewing equipment. Students explore basic sewing techniques, fashion terminology, and their application to basic garment construction. Basic flat pattern drafting is introduced for construction of a simple evening dress. This little Black Dress' competes for 'People's Choice Award' in the spring. 6 Students At Work 7 FAS 103 Apparel Design and Construction I For the first time, students get a real taste of design. Using a basic set of slopers students develop patterns for creative designs. Professional design room techniques are emphasized. 8 FAS 104 Apparel Design and Construction II This class further continues the development of patterns from the basic sloper set and the construction of finished garments. Styling, fit. and professional sewino techniques ore emphasized. 9 FAS 105 Fashion Design and Illustration I As a foundation course, FAS I 05 introduces students to basic fashion sketching. They learn how to develop drawings of front, back, and side views, emphasizing the relationship of figure to garment. They analyze and identify fabrics and employ various technical methods such as weaving, printing, dyeing, and knitting. Our new knitting machines allow students to explore design and technique in greater detail. 11 Students At Work FAS 109 Fashion Arts Students ore introduced to basic design and color principles in the development of creative fabrics. They analyze and identify fabrics and employ various technical methods such as weaving, printing, dyeing, and knittino. Our new knitting machines allow students to explore design and technique in greater detail. 14 Costume History FAS I I 0 Introduces the elements of design and color in historical perspective. This survey of his+oricat periods of time focus on the costume and its relationship to art and architecture. The influence of social political. and economic forces on fashion in these periods is a lso examined. 15 FAS 113 Advanced Industrial Sewing Students focus on application and mastery of basic sewing skills. Industrial terminology. technical accuracy, and appropriate use of selected material and supplies ore emphasized. 16 FAS 201 Flot Pattern Design and Draping Ill This class continues advanced development of the basic sloper sets by including coat patterns, suit slopers, and basic principles of manual grading (size development). Students test patterns in muslin for fit and accuracy prior to the final coat project. 17 FAS 203 Advanced Diversified Apparel Design This course enables students to study knit fabrica tions and translate specialized patterns of original designs into completed knit garments. Visits to manufacturers and speakers from industry are included. 18 Students At Work 19 FAS 212 Visual Fashion Merchandising This course explores the visual methods of communications. Students learn techniques of promoting products through design principles in advertising, publicity. display, fashion shows, and special events. Studio V is a merchandising lob which is a functioning retail outlet. Its mission is to provide merchandising students on opportunity to apply their skills in display, customer service, salesmanship, and marketing; provide a venue for student artisans to test their product against professional standards and learn about the responsibilities of small business ownership. Ifs on opportunity for community artisans to do the some. FAS 229 Promotion of Fashion Promotion of Fashion includes various techniques and methods to sell fashion. Its emphasis is on advertising: newspapers. magazines. direct mail. catalogs, radio and elevision. It involves window displays, interior displays. shops, special events. fashion shows, and publicity. Students develop and analyze practical and creative assignments. These students toke an active role in the production of our annual Spring Fashion Show. 22 EAS 230 Fashion Forecasting The fashion industry is affected by social, economic, political and psychological forces. Students learn the influence of these forces and develop their own forecasts using techniques of trend forecasting that ore introduced. The course introduces methods of forecasting fashion trends. •• "' z ~ 0 FAS 245 Topics in Fashion Design This course focuses on selected topics in fashion design. Topics con include computer aided design, machine knitting, millinery, and trends as they ore recognized in the fashion industry. - _ -- -..... ··' Students ,__.._.__~---jA t Work Jury Show The Jury Show is a critique of the work created by our Fashion Students during the past year. Industry professionals offer students the opportunity to demonstrate thei r skills through this presentation. This is a very important event for both the students and the fashion department faculty here at Harper College. Assessment and validation of our students' skills are required by the Illinois Community College Board. This critique is essential in meeting those requirements, and indicates the level of expertise our students have reached. Students are introduced to industry professionals and potential internships, and faculty is shown where changes can be made to correct and enhance the program.
