IND 207 INTERIOR DESIGN INTERNSHIP 1-10 3

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Provides an opportunity for selected students who meet the prerequisite requirements to work with professionals in approved residential and contract design firms, retail stores, wholesale stores and showrooms specializing in interior design and related products.

Students are exposed to various aspects of the interior design field and present a report about their experience.

Prerequisites: IND 116, IND 205, and IND 206 with grades of “C” or better. Meets or exceeds the Harper testing placement requirement for ENG 101.

I. Identification of the skills to be obtained from the internship a. Design b. Business practices c. Sales

II. Preparation for the job search a. Writing a resume b. Participation in a mock interview

III. Student search for a work opportunity

IV. School approval of work opportunity

V. Development of a learning contract between the student and the employer

VI. Internship reports and time sheets

VII. Employer review process

VIII. Internship term paper and project presentation to student body

METHODS OF PRESENTATION:

Lecture, employer work requirements, student interaction

STUDENT OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should:

1. Be exposed to the reality of a career in interior design.

2. Complete 160 hours of employment at an interior design related company, under the supervision of interior design professionals and the faculty advisor.

3. Prepare a resume and portfolio focused toward obtaining employment in interior design.

4. Participate in a mock-interview.

5. Contact employers and interview with two.

6. Develop a learning contract between the student and the employer and have this approved by the faculty advisor.

7. Maintain records and reports regarding the employment opportunity and the number of hours worked.

8. Write a report about the internship experience and present it to other students.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:

Class participation at the internship planning workshops. Successful completion of work contract, other projects, and reports. Completion of 160 hours of work experience. Employer signed timesheets. Evaluation will be done of student’s individual progress and growth by the employer and the instructor. Presentation of work project and term paper documenting learning experience.
