XU Mail Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Below is the answer to many frequently asked questions for Xavier University of
Louisiana’s email system. If your question is not present please contact the Help
Desk for assistance.
1 Q. I have been asked to provide confidential details in an email I received. How
can I tell if it is legitimate?
1 A. Xavier’s ITC Department will never ask for your password, social security
number, or other personal information. If you receive such a message do not
respond to it. You may forward the message to the ITC Help Desk so that we may
take action to prevent any harmful hacking attempts.
2 Q. I have a general question about the new Webmail client. How do I get it
answered?
2 A. Please check the online help first once you login to the client. Many times you
can find the answer to your question there. A quick introduction to our new mail
client can be found here:

There are also some online tutorials contributed by Sun Microsystems wiki page.

If you have questions or issues that are still not answered you may contact the ITC
Help Desk.
3 Q. I use a client to access my email such as Outlook. How will the mail upgrade
affect me?
3 A. You should see no difference in the way you use mail if you use a client.
Initially you may have difficulty in sending or receiving messages. If this is the case
please quit out of your client and restart it. If you are still experiencing issues then
contact the Help Desk.
4 Q. I am receiving unwanted mail. How can I prevent it?
4 A. You may block and allow individual senders through your interface to the
ProofPoint appliance. Detail instructions can be found under “ProofPoint Spam
Management Quarantine” here:
http://www.xula.edu/itc/documents/spammgt.pdf
5 Q. I would like to configure my portable device to read my Xavier mail. How do I
set this up?
5 A. Due to the number of devices and providers it is not practical to document
comprehensive instructions. Please contact your provider for assistance. It is
recommended that you either use IMAP or POP with the “keep messages on server”
option selected. The incoming mail host in either case is mail.xula.edu.
6 Q. I would like to access my Xavier mail at home. What is the best way to set this
up?
6 A. You may use your home client or other email provider to access your Xavier
mail messages. It is recommended that you either use IMAP or POP with the “keep
messages on the server” option selected. Detailed instructions for some common
email providers can be found under the email section here:
POP with Gmail

POP with MSN

7 Q. I can configure a client to receive my Xavier mail at home but I cannot send
mail. How do I resolve this?
7 A. Sending Xavier mail through a client is not supported off campus. You must use
Webmail.
8 Q. How do I change my email password?
8 A. You can change your password from the Options tab in Webmail. It is
recommended that you make your password at least 8 characters with a mixture of
upper and lower case letters along with numbers. If you do not remember your
password you may contact the Help Desk for assistance.
9 Q. I would like to use a client and access the online calendar and IM features. Is
there a way to do this?
9 A. Xavier’s ITC Department is currently researching this issue. Outlook and
Thunderbird users should be able to access the online calendar by 4Q 2009. It is
unlikely other clients will be supported.
A standalone IM client is available to those who use a client. It can be accessed from
the following link:
http://mail.xula.edu:8080/im
This is a java application and it must be configured the first time it is used. The
method is dependant upon your operating system.
10 Q. I would like to use the IM client to chat with someone that isn’t on the Xavier
domain. Is this possible?
10 A. Xavier’s new IM deployment is for internal use only. It is not supported or
intended for other purposes.
