XU Mail Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Below is the answer to many frequently asked questions for Xavier University of Louisiana’s email system. If your question is not present please contact the Help Desk for assistance. 1 Q. I have been asked to provide confidential details in an email I received. How can I tell if it is legitimate? 1 A. Xavier’s ITC Department will never ask for your password, social security number, or other personal information. If you receive such a message do not respond to it. You may forward the message to the ITC Help Desk so that we may take action to prevent any harmful hacking attempts. 2 Q. I have a general question about the new Webmail client. How do I get it answered? 2 A. Please check the online help first once you login to the client. Many times you can find the answer to your question there. I use a client to access my email such as Outlook. How will the mail upgrade affect me? 3 A. You should see no difference in the way you use mail if you use a client. Initially you may have difficulty in sending or receiving messages. If this is the case please quit out of your client and restart it. If you are still experiencing issues then contact the Help Desk. 4 Q. I am receiving unwanted mail. How can I prevent it? 4 A. You may block and allow individual senders through your interface to the ProofPoint appliance. I would like to configure my portable device to read my Xavier mail. How do I set this up? 5 A. Due to the number of devices and providers it is not practical to document comprehensive instructions. Please contact your provider for assistance. It is recommended that you either use IMAP or POP with the “keep messages on server” option selected. The incoming mail host in either case is mail.xula.edu. 6 Q. I would like to access my Xavier mail at home. What is the best way to set this up? 6 A. You may use your home client or other email provider to access your Xavier mail messages. It is recommended that you either use IMAP or POP with the “keep messages on the server” option selected. I can configure a client to receive my Xavier mail at home but I cannot send mail. How do I resolve this? 7 A. Sending Xavier mail through a client is not supported off campus. You must use Webmail. 8 Q. How do I change my email password? 8 A. You can change your password from the Options tab in Webmail. It is recommended that you make your password at least 8 characters with a mixture of upper and lower case letters along with numbers. If you do not remember your password you may contact the Help Desk for assistance. 9 Q. I would like to use a client and access the online calendar and IM features. Is there a way to do this? 9 A. Xavier’s ITC Department is currently researching this issue. Outlook and Thunderbird users should be able to access the online calendar by 4Q 2009. It is unlikely other clients will be supported. A standalone IM client is available to those who use a client. It can be accessed from the following link: http://mail.xula.edu:8080/im This is a java application and it must be configured the first time it is used. The method is dependant upon your operating system. 10 Q. I would like to use the IM client to chat with someone that isn’t on the Xavier domain. Is this possible? 10 A. Xavier’s new IM deployment is for internal use only. It is not supported or intended for other purposes.
