Shayna Blum, Associated Professor
of Graphic Design travels to Mumbai, India...
“The Typoday 2015 conference explored
the sensitivity and fineness in typography
design. This international conference took
place at one of India’s most prestigious
University, India Institute of Technology,
Bombay in Mumbai, India.
At the conference, I presented my
research paper, “Multilingual Typography:
Signs and Language Politics of Israeli Urban Communities”. The paper detailed
my observations and deconstruction of the use of multilingual typographic
signage within the linguistic landscapes of three Israeli cities; Jerusalem,
Tel Aviv, and Haifa. This project began in the fall of 2013 while I was
living and working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and took approximate one year
to develop this first phase of the project.
After presenting my paper, I received excellent feedback from an
international community of academics
and professionals. The comments and
discussions I encountered have led me to
contemplate concepts regarding the Israeli
linguistic landscape and it’s use of
multilingual typography: Hebrew, Arabic,
and English. I am motivated in developing
this work further and am currently
continuing this research.
In addition to my presentation, I heard astounding lectures regarding
global typography and discourse in Latin, Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, and
Sri Lankan scripts. These lectures and the experience abroad remind me of
the importance of cross-cultural studies within our contemporary
globalized society”.
