UCL School of Pharmacy: Building Access Policy for Students
1.
INTRODUCTION
This Policy governs the access permissions for the Brunswick Square building for students at
the UCL School of Pharmacy. There are different access rights for each group of students and
these are outlined below. Students wishing to find study space outside these hours may look at
Where Can I Study?, which gives information on buildings that have longer access hours
including those with 24hrs such as the UCL Main Library or the Cruciform Hub.
2.
ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS
2.1
Students have full access to all floors of the School during the normal working hours of
08:00– 18:00 Mondays to Fridays in term time. Students are allowed some access outside
of these times but should be aware that the School is often booked for additional teaching or
external events outside of normal working hours and at weekends.
2.2
Outside the normal working hours, taught undergraduate and postgraduate students will be
allowed access at the times specified below to the following areas: the basement, ground floor
and first floor, as well as the west end of the second floor for access to the IT suite. Rooms on
Floors 2 to 5 are controlled by a swipe card system and are accessible only by staff and PhD
students.
2.3
All students are required to sign in at the Lodge (front desk) if they are in the building for any
time after 18:00 hours or at the weekends.
2.4
The following access rights are granted to students:
MPharm Students (access is granted in line with the IT suite and Library Hours)

PhD students are covered by the Working Alone Code of Practice which requires their
supervisor to carry out a risk assessment to confirm their suitability for lone working. Once
approved, the PhD student is issued with a “note of permission to work alone” which must be
produced when requested by security staff.

BOOKING ROOMS
3.1
The rooms listed below can be prior booked by students for use outside of normal teaching
hours and within the access hours listed above. If the rooms have not been booked beforehand
then students may enquire about their availability with the Lodge on the day. Students will be
required to leave their School ID cards with the Lodge when borrowing keys for these rooms.
The ID cards will be handed back when the keys are returned. If students require access to the
audio visual equipment in teaching rooms they must request this when booking the room. In no
event can students’ personal equipment be connected to the School’s audio visual equipment.





4.
REGULATIONS
4.1
Any visitors need to be signed into the building at the Lodge (front desk). Students may not sign
anyone in outside normal working hours.
4.2
No food or hot drinks may be consumed in any of the rooms except for the JCR, Refectory and
Square Lounge and no electrical appliances other than laptops or printers may be used.
4.3
Students who do not follow the procedures outlined in this policy may be dealt with under the
School’s Disciplinary or Fitness to Practise Procedures as appropriate.
