Job Vacancy Announcement Department of Human Resources PO Box C07, Tsaile, AZ 86556 928-724-6603 POSITION TITLE: Counselor VACANCY NUMBER: LOCATION: SALARY CLASSIFICATION: OPEN PERIOD: 064.TS15.ADM Tsaile Campus – Title III $46,000.00 02/23/2016 CLOSE: Open Until Filled Role: The Counselor is responsible for providing supportive advising to individuals and groups during counseling services for students with academic and social developmental problems; for ensuring that college students participate in the required and/or appropriate events established to enhance their higher education experience; and to motivate them to have a successful completion of their degree plan. Additional responsibility for the Counselor includes researching, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of the Student Success programs for students experiencing academic difficulties or challenging life circumstances. Provide counseling services that emphasizes prevention. May assist students with addressing social and personal challenges, such as, addiction, parenting, marital problems, suicide, stress management, self-esteem and other mental and emotional health issues. Duties and Responsibilities: 40% Counseling Services / Programming 20% Collaboration / Coordination of services and trainings 20% Academic / Personal Counseling Counsel students on academic, personal and social problems. Assists students in understanding and coping with social, behavioral, and personal problems. Provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur and to enhance students’ personal, social, and academic growth. Provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention and intervention. Counsel students and families to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote optimum mental health. Implement a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address a wide range of issues, including depression, addictions and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress management, problems with self-parenting, and marital or other relationship problems. Design and implement innovative counseling programs and services for students on campus including, but not limited to, workshops, events, activities, trips, support groups, etc. Collaborate with staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating systems and processes of the essential functions of the student advisement and intervention programs. Provide on-going presentations of cross-culturally relevant programs concerning mental health and wellness to campus community and local K-12 schools (outreach). Support divisions and program initiatives that positively impact student persistence, academic success, and enrichment. Serve in a supportive role for the Summer Institute (each summer) and student orientation program (each semester) with the Student Affairs Department. Provide counseling services to individual students and/or groups to include, but not limited to, academic advising, career planning, financial aid, and other personal issues and concerns. Complete retention contracts with assigned students on probation, suspension or other “at-risk” students. Lead and facilitate discussion groups and educational workshops to promote strategies for academic success and address personal challenges that may hinder student academic potential. 15% Assessment / Professional Development 5% Other Promote early intervention strategies and referrals to the Learning Center and collaborate with faculty and tutors in identifying and assisting students who are struggling personally and academically. Initiate referrals to community agencies and recourse as appropriate. Assist with the coordination of incoming/new students through advising, registration, and orientation. Establish and maintain student records, including contact logs, letters of recommendations, and relevant academic worksheets and forms. Provide input for the development of policies, processes and programs that affect counseling services. Monitor student progress and maintain thorough and appropriate student records both hard copy files and electronic files on student information database systems (i.e. EX Jenzabar, Who’s Next-Blue Eon). Actively participate in staff development initiatives and remain knowledgeable about best practices focused on students with mental health challenges and/or disabilities. Prepare documents, reports and routine correspondences in a timely manner; collect student data and provide information accordingly; promote and use datadriven decision making. Compile data and statistics reflecting progress, trends, and use of services and appropriate recommendations for future initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Experience: Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field within the Behavioral Sciences. Minimum of six months experience working with Native American students; One year experience implementing treatment/intervention models for counseling. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals impacted by a wide spectrum of mental, emotional and psychological conditions. 2. Knowledge of FERPA policies to demonstrate student confidentiality. 3. Ability to facilitate discussions, workshops, and instruct on counseling related topics, issues and concerns to faculty, staff and students. 4. Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of students from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds; work is generally performed with maximum interaction with students and college personnel. 5. Demonstrate sensitivity to students’ needs; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions. 6. Ability to work under stressful conditions. 7. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. 8. Job involves community outreach and travel to local educational institutions. 1. Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory. 2. Knowledgeable in using basic office technology (i.e. desktop computers, Xerox machine, etc.); Interest and willingness to learn how to incorporate technology within academic advising services. 3. Knowledgeable in using Microsoft Software and student information systems (i.e. EX JVA-2012 Jenzabar, Who’s Next, etc.) 4. Skills in public speaking in conduct presentations at different functions. 5. Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of students from various backgrounds (i.e. race, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, disability, religion, etc.) 6. Skills in report writing and data collection/analysis. 7. Demonstrate understanding of the Dine’ College mission and role of the tribal college. 8. Self-motivated and results oriented; strong organizational skills; demonstrate positive customer service skills and professionalism. 9. Knowledgeable in Dine’ College academic policies and procedures in assisting students; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and Dine’ College. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Long hours of sitting, using a computer, or traveling to other sites. Use of college vehicle, which requires updated Navajo Nation Public Highway Safety certificate. Proficient in the use of Computer Software, such as Microsoft Office, Jenzabar EX or similar, etc. Works primarily, although not exclusively, in a climate controlled environment. This position requires average agility and good physical condition Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Work requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, and other physical exertion at times.
