Alumni Enjoy a Return to Campus 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Spring 2010 Dear Xavier Alumni & Friends: What a great time to be in New Orleans, and to be here at Xavier! In early February 2010, the future of New Orleans forever changed as a result of the New Orleans Saints victory in Super Bowl XLIV. The level of excitement generated by this accomplishment has been contagious. Simultaneously, both locally and nationally, we have experienced an equally high level of excitement as evidenced by such major events as the hopeful end of what has been described as the nation’s worst economic downturn in a generation, the recent passage of the health care reform law, the anticipation in New Orleans of a new mayoral administration, and the beginning of Xavier’s eighty-fifth year of existence. In this issue, we are pleased to be able to share with the Xavier family our featured story which provides a glimpse of the major construction and renovation projects occurring on campus. Five years post-Katrina, the University continues to strategically acquire and develop properties that have been deemed critical in support of the types of programs and facilities that are important to both student and faculty recruitment and retention. Two projects in particular, the Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion and the St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, are generating a great deal of interest and excitement. On the academic front, interest from prospective students remains strong, an encouraging sign that continues to support our long-term goals. The University recently embarked on a new academic initiative aptly titled Read Today, Lead Tomorrow, which is designed to ensure that the entire campus community appreciates the correlation between reading and lifelong learning. I encourage all alumni to journey with us on this life altering process, which was developed in support of our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) – an initiative in support of our ongoing ten year accreditation review. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the continued support of thousands of generous alumni and friends who choose to financially support the University. This issue includes our annual Honor Roll of Donors, which lists those donors who made a financial contribution during the period January 1st - December 31st, 2009. The continued support and generosity of each and every donor is a vital component of our mission to educate deserving students, and we remain eternally grateful to each and every one of you. We are most pleased to include in this issue photos of the more than 400 alumni who returned to celebrate a class reunion during Homecoming 2009. We are always grateful whenever alumni choose to visit us due in part to the impact these visits have on current students. In closing, I am confident that even though the Super Bowl was won, the New Orleans Saints will not rest on their laurels. The same can be said for Xavier University of Louisiana. Much work remains to be done and with your unwavering support, commitment, and prayers, together we will continue to make Xavier University a great institution. XG Spring 2010 2 Sincerely, Norman C. Francis President Au Courant Cur rent Events, News and O ther Happenings at Xav i e r XU Still Tops for Med Schools Xavier continues its track record of successfully placing more African American students into medical schools each year than any other higher education institution in the country, a distinction that it has maintained since 1993. A total of sixty-nine (69) Xavier graduates were accepted into medical and dental schools during the 2008-2009 academic year. The University is also off to a good start for the 2009-10 academic year, as evidenced by the more than a dozen seniors who have already been accepted into medical schools. Full Tuition Available to Top Scholars A PAIR OF QUEENS - Miss Xavier 2009-2010 Amber Robins (L), a senior biology/pre-med major from Baton Rouge LA, shares the limelight with her predecessor, Lagina Williams ’09, before officially receiving her crown at the annual University Coronation Ball. Top performing high school students from Catholic high schools across the nation, as well as those from public high schools in two Louisiana parishes, will be eligible for full tuition scholarships at Xavier beginning with the fall 2010 semester. The newly-established Katharine Drexel Scholarships, named for Xavier’s founder, offer full tuition to all valedictorians and salutatorians from any Catholic high school in the United States who are admitted as firsttime freshmen. The equally new Norman C. Francis Scholarships, named for Xavier’s current president, provide the same benefits to valedictorians or salutatorians from public schools in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes Freshman Applications Up for Fall Applications for the freshman class for fall 2010 are running 15 percent higher than last year. That’s music to the ears of XU Dean of Admissions Winston Brown, who attributes much of the increase to a growing national interest in the University’s varied offerings. “Applications from local students remain steady, but we are seeing additional interest from prospects from throughout our region and across the country,” said Brown. XG Spring 2010 3 Cu r re nt Eve nt s, News and O ther Happenings at Xavier White Humanist of the Year Dr. Michael White ’76, has been named the 2010 Humanist of the Year by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. White, a renowned jazz clarinetist, bandleader, composer, jazz historian and Xavier music and Spanish educator, received the organization’s top honor at the 2010 awards ceremony. When nominating White for the award, Nick Spitzer, producer and host of the American Routes syndicated radio broadcast and Tulane University professor of American studies and anthropology, described White as the “foremost player of traditional New Orleans jazz clarinet alive today.” Big Easy Awards Honor Music Professor Dr. John Ware ’77, XU professor of music and conductor/music director of the New Orleans Black Chorale, was named recipient of the Big Easy Entertainment Award’s 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Cur rent Events, News and O ther Happenin g s at Xav i e r Enrollment at New High Post-Hurricane Katrina enrollment hit a new high this past fall, thanks to a solid freshman class that exceeded projected levels and a welcome influx of new transfer students. The addition of 910 new freshmen and transfers has pushed the university’s current overall enrollment to 3,338 students, four percent higher than last fall’s 3,204. Enrollment has grown steadily the past four years. “After Katrina we set out on a five-year plan to gradually grow our freshman class back to a sustainable level of around 800 new students each year,” said Winston Brown, Dean of Admissions. “We are pretty much on that schedule.” ON THEIR WAY - First-year College of Pharmacy students sign their professional oaths at the annual White Coat Ceremony, during which the neophyte students received their first professional uniform - the white jacket - symbolizing ethical practice and signifying the beginning of their professional pharmacy educations. XU Pharmacy Accreditation Reaffirmed The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has reaffirmed the accreditation of the Xavier College of Pharmacy. “We remain confident in the quality of our pharmacy program and are proud that this professional assessment confirms the value of Xavier’s College of Pharmacy,” said Dr. Norman C. Francis, president. Xavier continues to be one of the top producers of African American pharmacists in the nation on an annual basis. Admission to its College of Pharmacy is highly competitive with more than 1,000 annual applications to be among the 165 students admitted for each first-year class. Of the 524 students who graduated from Xavier this past spring, 150 of them earned the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. GUESTS OF HONOR - Honorary degree recipients Donna Brazile, a national political strategist, and Forest Whitaker, Academy Award-winning actordirector-producer, flank Dr. Francis on the Lakefront Arena Stage during the 2009 Commencement ceremony. XU Gets Nod in Guide The University has once again received the endorsement of a prominent, annual college rating publication. Xavier was singled out as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education by The Princeton Review in the 2010 edition of its annual guide, “The Best 371 Colleges.” XU was one of 365 holdovers from last year’s guide. The guide cites Xavier’s unparalleled success in a number of academic areas – particularly premedical and pharmacy studies. XG Spring 2010 5 Cu r re nt Eve nt s, News and O ther Happenings at Xavier President’s Leadership Cited The Xavier community has yet another reason to be proud of its president, Dr. Norman C. In its annual “Top 100 Undergraduate Degree Producers” issue, the magazine showed XU once again ranking first in the nation in the number of African American students earning baccalaureate degrees in two areas – the biological and biomedical sciences, as well as the physical sciences. Xavier is comfortably ahead of the pack in both categories. The Diverse Issues report is based on a review of the 2007-2008 preliminary data distributed by the U.S. Department of Education, which includes the effect of Hurricane Katrina (e.g. Xavier’s smaller total enrollment). XU, NYU Form Partnership in Materials Research Offering first year freshmen an opportunity to do research and increasing minority graduate study in the nanotechnology field is the goal of a new partnership between Xavier and New York University. The two schools have received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to bolster diversity among materials scientists through collaborative research and curriculum development. “Materials science builds bridges between scientists and engineers,” said XU chemistry professor Dr. Lamar Meda, who heads the project here at Xavier with physics professor Dr. Bryan Bilyeu. “This research is cutting-edge and there are very few undergraduate programs, none at an HBCU and currently none in Southern Louisiana. Just as it was for the Saints and the City of New Orleans, Super Bowl Sunday was was a moment of personal redemption for Hamilton, a Chalmette LA native whose family lost almost everything when Hurricane Katrina rolled ashore in 2005. She did, however, evacuate with three days worth of clothes and her Saintsations uniforms. Like most of her College of Pharmacy classmates, Hamilton quickly returned to Xavier to finish her studies. She’ll be graduating in May. “Being at the Super Bowl with the Saints was something special,” she said. “I can’t even put into words how great it was, but I will remember it for the rest of my life.” AwithView Some Room D d B ack in the late 1970’s when Xavier administrators were contemplating construction of new modern buildings to replace some of the old wooden structures which had housed key academic departments for more than three decades, they brought in an architect to view the campus. Very humble beginnings: work began on the COP expansion with construction of the western-most stairwell. As legend has it, upon hearing some University staffers refer to the older buildings as World War II army barracks, the architect commented with some astonishment that he had thought the buildings were from World War I. A casual visitor to the campus today might experience the same degree of wonder – albeit for a different and much more positive reason. Today the epicenter of campus is the hub of much construction activity – an undertaking which will change the shape of the University and the New Orleans skyline forever. XG Spring 2010 Presently the long-needed expansion to the College of Pharmacy building is rapidly moving towards completion, while construction of the long-dreamed about and highly-anticipated St. Katharine Drexel Chapel will commence soon after the former opens for business. 11 Room A VIEW with some Groundbreaking Puts COP Expansion On Fast Track Work on the Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion began in May 2008 after Amir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani – whose middle eastern nation of Qatar provided Xavier with an unexpected post-Katrina windfall grant of $17.5 million – visited the city to witness the official groundbreaking ceremony. When completed later this year, the much-needed, five-story, 60,000-square foot addition – which had been in the planning stages for several years – will allow the COP to sustain its increased enrollment growth while drastically improving the overall quality of the academic programs and research endeavors. Each year more than 1,000 students apply for admission to the College of Pharmacy, yet only 165 (15 percent) are admitted due to space and staffing constraints. The addition will give the College the capacity to support and maintain its strategic enrollment target of 650 students – an impressive 34 percent increase since 2002. “Each year more than 1,000 students apply yet only 15 percent are admitted...” The Pavilion will be connected to the Library Resource Building and the existing College of Pharmacy building facing the campus’ I-10 boundary to the north. The tennis courts and the old Student Center, replaced by the new University Center in 2003 and out of use since then, were both removed to make way for the new structure. Hamad Al-Dosari, senior diplomat with the Embassy of the Nation of Qatar, gets an update on the progress of the new pharmacy pavilion from XU President Norman Francis. Plans call for moving most of the existing laboratories to the new building, while remodeling space in the original building for additional classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty and staff offices. All of the new high-tech teaching labs, as well as two large auditorium-style lecture halls – each capable of seating as many as 200 students – will be housed in the expansion. The building will also hold teaching and research laboratories, a mock pharmacy skills laboratory and a Drug Information Center. The addition will feature enhanced learning stations, satellite technology, large screen projection capability, enhanced audio, and research laboratories equipped with the latest technological equipment and software. “A well-equipped pharmacy facility not only supports student development and faculty research interests, but also allows the College to build important relationships with the pharmaceutical industry, other health care providers and the general population who depend on the educational seminars and clinical services that we provide,” said COP interim Dean Kathleen Kennedy. “Providing our faculty and students with the latest research equipment and facilities to help address major issues and proper drug delivery is critical if we are to continue to maintain our important healthcare leadership role,” she added. XG Spring 2010 12 An architect’s rending of the finished College of Pharmacy expansion as seen from the University Center. Pelli Visit Brings Drexel Chapel Closer To Reality It would be an understatement to suggest that building a free-standing religious chapel on campus has been an elusive dream for most of Xavier’s history. A chapel was actually included in (then) Mother Katharine Drexel’s original blueprint plans for the Xavier campus in the late 1920’s and it has been mentioned as an upcoming project in nearly every university strategic plan for the past 80+ years. However those plans were always deferred in order to address other essential campus needs such as new classrooms and laboratories, faculty and staff offices, living “...World-renowned residences and architect Cesar Pelli other student oriented service visited the XU campus facilities. to unveil his design Architect’s watercolor rendering of the proposed St. Katharine Drexel Chapel as it will be seen from the Quad. But that dream is for the new finally about to St. Katharine become a reality. In September Drexel Chapel.“ 2009 the longawaited project officially moved off the university’s “to do” list and onto its “get it done” list when world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli visited the XU campus to unveil his design for the new St. Katharine Drexel Chapel. The 11,000 square foot structure will be situated next to the pharmacy addition right alongside the Interstate-10 Expressway bringing motorists to and from downtown New Orleans. Like the other buildings on campus, the chapel’s exterior will be made of limestone. Its domed roof will be made of copper with a large cross located strategically at its crest that architect Pelli joked “will be visible from the XG Spring 2010 Motorists traveling to and from the city via I-10 can’t help but notice the continuing progress of the towering six-story Qatar Pavilion expansion. Despite construction delays due to unfavorable winter weather, completion is scheduled for early summer with the official ribbon-cutting in the fall. 13 Room A VIEW with some airport to the river...” adding that “... people will see this cross and know it is the chapel at Xavier University.” President Norman C. Francis expressed his enthusiasm over the latest developments. “The new chapel and its centrality on campus will reinforce Xavier’s historic Catholic identity and its continued commitment to the goals and mission established by Saint Katharine, and will welcome students of all faiths to share in their spiritual development,” he said. The project is expected to cost more than $8 million, however Francis is optimistic about raising the needed funds. “We sometimes don’t appreciate how fortunate we have been,” he said. “We have faith that those things which we would like to do, can be done.” A model with the roof removed to show the octagonal interior of the 11,000 square foot chapel. Pelli, whose firm Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has designed some of the most famous buildings in the world, including the Petronas twin towers in Malaysia that were once the tallest in the world, expressed excitement at the opportunity to design a house of worship at Xavier. “The idea of constructing a building with spiritual purposes is extremely attractive to me,” said Pelli, who himself grew up in a Catholic family. “This building will embody Drexel’s traits of modesty, simplicity and spirituality. It will make you feel totally uplifted.” Those wishing to make donations towards construction of the pharmacy expansion or the new Chapel should call XU Institutional Advancement at 504-520-7575 or visit the website at www.xula.edu. More information will be mailed to all alumni directly in the coming months. XG A CAMPUS ALIVE While the Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion construction and plans for the new StKD Chapel have garnered much attention, there are numerous other campus improvement projects either currently underway or close to fruition. Here is a short list: Completed Projects: • Electrical Upgrades/Lighting Retrofit • Science Building (1st Floor Classroom Renovations) Ongoing Projects: • Art Village Renovations (Renovation of existing buildings + recently acquired former nightclub.) • New Surface Parking Lot (4700 Howard Avenue, near I-10 Expressway) Anticipated Projects: XG Spring 2010 14 President Norman C. Francis and Cesar Pelli (seated) review plans for the new campus chapel with Pelli associate Mitchell Hirsch. • Campus-wide Electrical Upgrade • Central Plant Infrastructural Upgrade • Convocation Academic Center • Replacement of Old Student Center O ne of the newest facets of the re-accreditation process for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP entails a five-year, campus-wide initiative targeted to improve some aspect of student learning. A successful QEP will not only strengthen student performance and learning but will also be a wholly transformative experience for the entire university community. The development of Xavier’s QEP has unfolded over the past two years in anticipation of the university’s SACS site visit in March 2010. One of the more challenging components of the QEP standard is that it must be developed with input from every segment of the university. Last December, President Norman Francis wrote to alumni requesting guidance from Xavier graduates regarding what aspects of student learning might best be addressed through the QEP process. Every member of the full Xavier community – students, alumni, staff, faculty, Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, and trustees – received that same letter, but this was only the beginning of the QEP inception. Through that letter and other outreach, the university received a multitude of suggestions focusing on everything from reading and writing to ethics, institutional mission, and engagement. Throughout much of the Spring 2009 semester, discussions on and around campus focused on what would be the most significant aspect of student learning on which to concentrate the QEP – the University’s opportunity to dedicate resources and concentrated effort in an area most in need of improvement. XG Spring 2010 It became clear that all campus constituencies were concerned with the apparently low level of student engagement. Student engagement is a broad, all-encompassing idea that not only reflects the degree to which students are dedicated to their academic pursuits, but also attests to students’ feelings, values, and attitudes towards the institution and the educational endeavor. The question of student engagement resonates with the degree to which students care about and feel a part of the university community. 15 Q u a l i t y E n h a n cement Plan A nother challenging aspect of the QEP is that for the five-year duration of the plan, every project and activity executed as part of the QEP must be assessed to determine the extent to which it has improved student learning. Everyone involved with education agrees that learning is improved when the students are emotionally invested in learning. Student engagement, though, is a difficult thing to assess. How do you measure the level of a student's emotional involvement in any given learning activity? Furthermore, how do you measure how much that emotional involvement has improved the student's learning as a result of that activity? Since a QEP focused on student engagement alone would not work according to the standards established by SACS, a group of students, staff, and faculty, working throughout the summer, accomplished two goals: first, they identified a more tangible element of student learning that would not only increase student engagement but could also be adequately tracked and measured as student learning outcomes; second, they developed a detailed action plan to initiate, implement, and assess these improvements. Recognizing reading as a skill inherent to all academic and intellectual pursuits, Xavier’s QEP strives to improve the strategic reading capacity of all students... Through months of discussion and hard work, Read Today, Lead Tomorrow, Xavier University's Quality Enhancement Plan, emerged. The immediate mission of this initiative is to encourage and assist our students to "become more active and engaged readers"; however, the long-term goal of this plan is rooted in the belief that such "enhanced skills and behaviors will enable students to improve their overall academic performance and will enliven the intellectual culture on campus." The QEP will help our students improve their critical reading skills so they can become more engaged in and out of the classroom. By doing so, not only will this plan further the educational mission of the University but its ethical mission as well. Transforming the intellectual culture on campus is no small task, but Read Today, Lead Tomorrow encompasses an array of focused activities separately designed for incremental improvements in specific areas that collectively make this daunting transformation possible. XG Spring 2010 16 Recognizing reading as a skill inherent to all academic and intellectual pursuits, Xavier’s QEP strives to improve the strategic reading capacity of all students, through a revised and strengthened developmental reading program. As a part of its mission, Xavier opens its doors to students whose grades and test scores may prevent them from entering other institutions of higher education. But Xavier admits these students with the expectation that through a Xavier education they, like many of our graduates, will beat the odds. Many of our incoming freshmen, for example, lack the basic reading skills necessary to complete a first-year college curriculum. Strengthening the Committee members flesh out the details of the initiative. Q ualit y Enhancement Plan developmental reading program will provide these students the support they need to fully embrace the rigor and demands of Xavier’s degree programs. R eading is vital to every academic discipline, but each discipline has its own reading needs and methods. This is the nature of reading as it applies to higher education and in light of this reality, the QEP provides training and professional development to faculty members to introduce active reading strategies in their entry-level classes, many of which are geared towards freshmen. For example, students taking BIOL 2000 will learn to more actively read as biologists, while students taking CPSC 1800 will learn to more actively read as computer scientists. Improving our students' reading skills is only part of the Read Today, Lead Tomorrow initiative. Encouraging our students to use reading as a means of becoming more engaged in the classroom—through their assigned readings—and out of the classroom—through leisure reading and community involvement—and providing them with numerous opportunities to do so is the more extensive part of this effort. Xavier’s QEP acknowledges a multifaceted approach to improving students’ reading skills and their value of the reading experience. Some courses may require reading journals where students reflect on various texts. They will also have many opportunities to join a variety of reading groups, through their classes, residence halls or through a service or social organization, with members of the faculty, or with Xavier staff. Students can also find support to establish their own reading groups. Regardless, they will come to see that reading can be a social medium, a way to engage and interact with other people. The QEP calls for the addition of well-lit comfortably furnished reader-friendly spaces across campus. B eyond campus, students will have a number of ways to use reading to reach out to and interact with the New Orleans community. Through service learning projects, students will visit local schools to model good reading for young children to improve their literacy, or by reading to the elderly to provide them with entertainment, information, and company. Xavier will also host and promote literary events, both on and off campus. Poetry readings and open mic nights will encourage people to share their own writings, while readings by wellknown poets and authors, as well as faculty, staff, and alumni, will further encourage the idea of reading as an effective social medium. Much of the groundwork for the Read Today, Lead Tomorrow initiative is currently unfolding with the plan slated for full implementation in the 2010 - 2011 academic year. Xavier submitted its QEP for SACS review in February and further inquiry took place during the campus site visit. Banners throughout the campus and neighboring roadways herald the University’s community-wide “Read Today, Lead Tomorrow” Quality Enhancement Plan initiative. The University eagerly anticipates the reaffirmation of its SACS accreditation following its annual meeting in December of 2010. XG XG Spring 2010 17 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Bryant Terry ‘97 Doing Justice to Food Bryant Terry ‘97 I t has been said that we are at an unenviable moment in human history when our yearning for unhealthy diets is taking us toward extinction. That if we do not change what we feed our children and teach them about the symbiotic relationship between a healthy planet, healthy food and healthy bodies – then our demise will be hastened. But who wants to be subjected to that guilt trip again? End of lecture. Bryant Terry ‘97 That’s where Bryant Terry ’97 comes in. A self-described eco-chef, author and food-justice activist, he realized early on that while there was a need to educate people on healthy choices, they were tired of being preached to. So he decided to deliver the same message via a more interesting, nay, more “palatable” sermon. “I’ve come to understand that a diet is such a personal journey,” said Terry. “I don’t think it’s anyone’s place to say what one’s diet should be, it’s really about checking in and being on that journey with one’s self.” Since graduating from the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City, Terry has used cooking as a tool to illuminate the intersections among poverty, structural racism and food insecurity. His interest in cooking, farming and community health can be traced back to his childhood in Memphis, where his grandparents inspired him to grow, prepare and appreciate good food. That’s the combination that he wants people to grasp. XG Spring 2010 18 “For me, it’s about helping people become more aware of the interconnectedness of all living beings, and how we’re just part of this complex whole with the environment, the animal kingdom, the mineral kingdom, the plant kingdom,” he said. “I want to help people to see how every action we take affects the whole.” In 2001, Terry founded b-healthy! (Build Healthy Eating and Lifestyles to Help Youth), a five-year initiative created to raise awareness about food justice issues and empower youth to be active in creating a more just and sustainable food system. A resident of Oakland CA, he has traveled to dozens of cities, doing cooking demonstrations and speaking at public events as well as at universities and colleges. He contributes essays and recipes to a number of online and print outlets, and his work has been featured in most major food-oriented magazines. Terry, who also holds a M.A. in American history from New York University in addition to his B.A. in English from Xavier, has garnered many honors for his work, including receiving the inaugural Natural Gourmet Institute Award for Excellence in Health-Supportive Food Education, being selected as one of the 2008 “Hot 20 Under 40” in the San Francisco Bay Area magazine 7×7 and recently being hailed as one of the “40 Chefs Under 40” by the online Mother Nature Network. In 2003 he published his first book, Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen, which received a Nautilus Award for Social Change. His second book, Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African American Cuisine, is a deeply personal and cutting-edge cookbook where Terry revisits his Southern roots and offers innovative, animal-free recipes mostly inspired by African American and Southern cooking. VSK recipes use fresh, whole, best-quality, healthy ingredients and cooking techniques with an eye on local, seasonal, sustainably grown food to demonstrate that dishes don’t have to be heavy or greasy to be delicious. Since that time he has been a tireless advocate of improved health care for women. Now you might say he is finally getting his due. Pattillo, now the director of gynecologic oncology at Morehouse School of Medicine, was recently recognized by his medical alma mater, St. Louis University, which bestowed upon him its highest honor, the Alumni Merit Award. Later this year, he’ll be in line for some additional national recognition when a new book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, is published amongst much ballyhoo, including a spread in Oprah magazine. The book will tell the story of Henrietta Lacks, a 33-year-old black mother of five children whose death in 1951 provided scientists with one of the most important tools in medicine – the first “immortal” human cells grown in culture. An important piece of that tale of scientific discover will be a recounting of Pattillo’s own association with Dr. George Gey, the physician who successfully grew human cells outside the human body after cultivating the cancerous cells from Lack’s cervix. Then at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the two doctors were researching regenerative medicine, e.g. the potential for the human body to repair its own damaged organs and parts to pre-damaged or diseased condition. “Being able to reproduce human cells outside of the body and the diseases that affect them was (and is) critical to developing cures for those diseases,” said Pattillo. “Up to that point, nearly all advances in medicine were made by testing on laboratory mice and other animals, but the fact was that response in humans wasn’t always the same.” (Continued, next page) Terry (from page 18) his third book and a television project. Terry is also a fellow of the Food and Society Policy Fellows Program, which provides funding to professionals in food and agriculture enabling them to use mass media channels to inform and shape the public agenda. He fully supports the program’s goal of creating sustainable food systems that promote good health, vibrant communities, environmental stewardship, worker justice and accessibility for all. “One of the biggest things I uncovered in my work, especially working with young people, is that a lot of people living in low income areas and urban areas are living in what are known as ‘food deserts’,” said Terry. “They have very little access to fresh food – healthy, local, sustainable, all that – and have an overabundance of the worst foods, the fried things, the packaged fast food that has a negative impact on their overall health.” “Lack of access to healthy food is a huge issue, but it’s only one indicator of material deprivation these people are living with,” he added. “Usually it is accompanied by failing infrastructure, dilapidated schools, high levels of illiteracy and low income. These are all issues that need to be addressed.” XG XG Spring 2010 As such, he has spent much of the last two years focusing a great deal of his professional energies on the Southern Organic Kitchen Project as a way of addressing the rise of chronic illnesses in historically-excluded urban communities in the South. Dr. Roland Pattillo ’55 19 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Patillo (from page 19) During that research, Pattillo established a cervical cell line that was used by other researchers to create a vaccine for the human papilloma virus, which causes cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers in women. It is still used today. Lack’s original cells were also shared with researchers worldwide, who have used them to search for a leukemia cure and the cause of cancer, to study viral growth, protein synthesis, genetic control mechanisms, and the unknown effects of drugs and radiation. Now universally known as the HeLa cells, they have also been directly responsible for the development of cures for polio and numerous other diseases. For their part, neither Pattillo nor Gey sought a patent for their groundbreaking work, since it was their common belief that the cells should be made available to scientists everywhere so vaccines could be studied. Only the third African American student accepted to Saint Louis University School of Medicine, he completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin and fellowships at Johns Hopkins and Harvard Universities. Pattillo, who was one of the first physicians to publish an article on stem cells, is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, one book and many book chapters. He was named Atlanta’s Top Doctor in 2002 by Atlanta Magazine and was recognized as a Health Care Hero in 2005 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Dr. George McKenna III In the 1980’s McKenna served as principal of Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles CA where he was credited with successfully turning an inner city school plagued with violence and low student achievement into a vibrant institution which boasted an attendance waiting list and where nearly 80 percent of the graduates enrolled in college. This accomplishment was documented in a made-for-television movie, The George McKenna Story, starring Hollywood icon Denzel Washington. Due to his success there and at various Unified School Districts in California, McKenna’s strategies – which stress academic excellence at all levels – have been widely modeled across the nation. His support of Xavier is also exemplary. XG Spring 2010 22 “Dr. McKenna is an outstanding alumnus who has demonstrated his loyalty to Xavier in many ways,” said XU President Norman C. McCaffrey The Xavier family joins the larger New Orleans community in mourning the passing of Edwin Harrell Hampton ‘52, the legendary music director and band master of St. Augustine High School for more than half a century. The Xavier community sadly notes the death of William T. McCaffrey, a long-time friend and supporter of the University and former chair of its Board of Trustees. Hampton devoted his entire professional life to St. Augustine, its students and its music program. Under his leadership the “Marching 100” became a Mardi Gras favorite after becoming the first African American band to march in the Rex parade. The band went on to achieve national fame, performing for eight U.S. presidents and Pope John Paul II as well as at several NFL Super Bowls, the Rose Bowl and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. McCaffrey, who had retired in 1998 as Senior Executive Vice President of Equitable Life, and Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of The Equitable Companies, joined the XU Board of Trustees in 1982 after earlier service on the Business Advisory Committee. McCaffrey worked tirelessly on Xavier’s behalf. He served four terms on the Board, including four years as chairman. During that tenure he also chaired the development committee and was at the forefront of the University’s first two Capital Campaigns, which raised more than $70 million towards expansion of the campus. He was named a Trustee Emeritus in 2001. Despite personal health challenges for the past several years, he never lost interest in Xavier’s continued progress and well being. The main ballroom of the University Center is named in honor of him and his wife Mary. While maintaining a steady stream of annual contributions, between them Mrs. Bouise and Anne have donated property, established a student scholarship and made provisions for Xavier in their estate planning. And now they’ve moved into a new realm that few others have embraced: charitable gift annuities. XU President Dr. Norman C. Francis welcomes Louise Metoyer Bouise ’35 and Dr. Anne Bouise Ward ’60 during a visit to the campus. A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between the donor and the donee in which in exchange for the former’s irrevocable contribution, the latter promises to make fixed monthly payments for life to one or two annuitants (usually, but not necessarily the donor). Within the past year, Mrs. Bouise and Anne have stepped forward to establish two such annuities: the first valued at $25,000 and the second at $50,000. “...Between them [they] have donated property, established a student scholarship and made provisions for Xavier in their estate planning...” To Anne’s way of thinking, giving back to Xavier is a no-brainer. “Without question, every Xavier graduate should be actively supporting their university,” said Anne, a retired obstetrician living in Chicago IL and now caring for her elderly mother, a retired educator who left New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. “If it weren’t for the excellent education and life experience they received at Xavier, they wouldn’t be where they are today.” “All of my classmates have done very well – and they need to give something back,” she said. “I know many do, but some don’t.” XG Spring 2010 48 After much careful thought and discussing the situation with affected family members, Anne came to the conclusion that charitable gift annuities offered the best of both worlds. “For us, charitable gift annuities represent the right venue at the right time,” said Anne, alluding to the current financial environment where cash is tight and CDs and bank savings rates are at all time lows. “It provides a way for my mother to leave money to Xavier – which she always intended to do – while at the same time providing her with the money she needs to live.” In fact, charitable gift annuities are a financial arrangement that can be quite beneficial to both parties. For their part, Mrs. Bouise (and then Anne) will receive fixed income during their lifetimes, as well as some tax benefits both now and for the eventual estate. When Anne dies, payments stop and the principal – free from any possible estate entanglements – seamlessly moves into an already established Joan Bouise Music Endowed Scholarship at Xavier (in the case of the first annuity) and into the new Dr. Oscar A. and Mrs. Louise Metoyer Bouise Endowed Scholarship at Xavier (in the case of the second). “Charitable gift annuities themselves are not new,” said LaJuana Chenier, associate vice president for development at Xavier, “but we want to make sure that our alumni and friends are aware of this type of family gift as a viable philanthropic and financial-planning option.” Anne said one of the added benefits of establishing the charitable gift annuities was the ease with which they were set up. Jones Elementary School. She was described by those closest to her as a “truly kind and compassionate person” and “a lovely sweet Catholic lady.” Dyson, who passed on Sept. 20, 2009, bequeathed to Xavier University a gift annuity of $113,000 – of which she stipulated $100,000 towards construction of the new St. Katharine Drexel Chapel. IT WAS HER FIRST AND ONLY GIFT TO XAVIER.
