PREVENTION RESEARCH PROJECTS
Michelle Hostetler, Ph.D. was the principal researcher on all of the prevention research
projects listed below.
The K-8 Leadership Project, State of Maine (funded by the State of Maine)
1990-94
Five year longitudinal process and outcome evaluation of the K-8 initiative for
preventing substance use and abuse. Elementary school students and staff across the
state are surveyed each year to determine the implementation and effectiveness of the
initiative. The same groups of program and comparison students are tracked from
grades 3-6 to grades 7-10.
The Growing Tree in Ann Arbor, MI (funded by the Skillman Foundation)
1990-94
Five year longitudinal evaluation of a substance abuse prevention program for the
children of substance abusers. Interviews were developed for preschool/kindergarten,
first/second grade, and third grade and older children. A parent survey was developed,
as well. One and two-year follow-ups are done to determine the long-term impact of the
program.
Project C.A.R.E. in Lancaster, PA (funded by the Center for Substance Abuse
Prevention)
1990-93
Three year longitudinal process and outcome evaluation of a substance abuse
prevention program designed to increase resiliency and decrease risk factors in high
risk fourth graders and their parents. Survey instruments were developed to measure
the knowledge, attitudes and behavior of students and parents.
The Northeast Regional Training Center, Sayville, NY
1987-93
Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of Super Teams training in preventing
substance abuse in junior and senior high school students throughout the Northeast
Region of the United States.
Franklin County Prevention Institute, Columbus, OH (funded by the U.S. Center
for Substance Abuse Prevention)
1992
A general population telephone survey designed to serve as a needs and capacity
assessment as well as a baseline measurement for the outcome evaluation was
conducted during the first year of the grant period. A survey was developed to assess
the goals and objectives of the Institute.
Blair County Community Development Approach to the Prevention of Drug and
Alcohol Abuse, Blair County, PA
1991
An impact evaluation of a community-based prevention approach. Community phone
surveys were conducted in 1986 and 1991 and an analysis of impact was made.
Medina City Juvenile Diversion Program, Medina, OH
1991-92
Short-term evaluation of the effectiveness of the Juvenile Diversion Program for highrisk youth in grades 7-12.
