STUDENT OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT
Student outcomes for this highly individualized program are so variable, they are primarily measured
through self-assessment.
ROUTINE PROCEDURES FOR MEASURING STUDENT OUTCOMES
Assessments of student competencies occur at four points during the program:
1. declaration of major
2. mid-program
3. program completion
4. post graduation
In addition, faculty members may meet and discuss the progress of individual students when viewed as
appropriate throughout the program. If necessary, feedback would be provided to the student at this
point.
1. Declaration of Major. In order to assess the applicants' suitability for the MAE: Professional
Development for Teachers program, transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL scores (when appropriate),
reference letters, and written applicant goal statements are reviewed by the MAE: Professional
Development in Teaching Committee.
Each student must prepare a degree program application called the GF-1, which outlines all courses
the student has selected to take and the student's research paper or thesis committee. The GF-1 must
be filled out in collaboration with the student's advisor, who must be a member of the MAE
Professional Development for Teachers Committee and submitted prior to the student completing 12
hours in the major.
2. Mid-program. Faculty evaluates each student according to specific course requirements and students in
the MAE: Professional Development for Teachers program must maintain an average of at least a Bto remain in the program. Faculty may meet and discuss the program of individual students when a
need to do so is perceived.
The student constructs a committee of faculty members to serve on a research paper or thesis
committee. Prior to completing the research paper, several meetings with the student and his or her
committee are convened to discuss progress on the paper or thesis. Students are asked to prepare a
proposal outlining their plans for completing the research paper or thesis, and this proposal must
then be approved by their committee before the student may proceed.
3. Program completion. Program completion is marked by the student successfully finishing his or her
coursework as specified on the GR-1 form and by the completion of the research paper or thesis.
The final draft of the research paper or thesis must be approved by the student's committee.
4. Post-graduation. The department maintains alumni surveys of the program. These surveys are then
used as input to revise the program to ensure that it provides relevant training for the kinds of
positions graduates typically obtain.
