1-1 Support in Academic
Writing and
Career Development
NEW THIS
MONTH:
As we start a new academic year we would like to
remind Research Active Staff that LDC provides
funding for expert 1-1 support sessions.
Event News:
In career development this can assist with CV
advice, career planning, preparing for interviews
or mock interviews.
In academic writing these sessions can be used to
consult an expert on your writing issues, such as
existing draft applications, producing a piece of
work from existing research or more broadly,
planning your research/writing strategies.
If you are interested in booking a session for
either form of 1-1 support please visit the website
and complete the relevant booking form:

FOCUS ON: SUPPORTING YOUR RESEARCH
WIS A Day With … 2015
Warwick Women in Science (WIS) recently completed a
successful year of activity with their annual WIS A Day
With … event, which took place on 24 September.
Midlands Newton Fund Summit
9 November 2015
University of Nottingham
Inspiring talks by Professor Jane Hutton (Statistics), Ally
Caldecote (Physics) and ScienceGrrl were complemented
by interactive breakout sessions. Topics explored included
positive discrimination, successful research promotion and
understanding personal strengths, alongside the notion of
an “enterprising researcher”.
The aim of this free event is to bring together
internationally acclaimed researchers and policy makers to
speak about why the Newton Fund is in place, the countries
and domains of research that the fund covers and most
importantly, why internationalisation and working with
researchers from across the world is critical for research
careers.
WIS is delighted to have received network funding from
LDC for 2015-16, enabling us to build on this event and the
new ideas generated about developing our network going
forwards. The current chair is standing down in midNovember, and the group will announce the new
committee at the beginning of December. The first
Seasonal WIS event for 2015-16 will take place in
December.
The Newton Fund is worth £75 million per year until 2019
and focuses on supporting doctoral student and researcher
fellowships, mobility schemes and funding for joint
research centres. Researchers at all career stages are
eligible for funding and there are currently a number of
calls open, including those for PhD placements and
Postdoctoral fellowships.
Judith Klein-Seetharaman, founding Local
Chapter Lead for ScienceGrrl and Professor in the
Medical School, attended the event and noted how she had
benefitted from it.
“In response to Sandy’s recommendation to have a better
online presence, I decided to update my Research Gate
profile, following a link that hits my email inbox many
times and usually remains ignored. I was greeted with a
message “Your paper has been cited 100 times” - a paper
that I had no idea people were actually reading!”
