It’s an exciting time as the transformation of
Davis Drive has made significant progress.
VivaNext rapidway construction between
Yonge Street and Roxborough Road is
nearly 60% done. As Davis approaches
its final year of construction, we thank
you for bearing with us as we work
hard to finish as quickly as possible.
When the rapidway is open in December
2015, Viva vehicles will have their own
dedicated bus lanes to provide fast,
convenient rapid transit. Over time,
Davis will feel like an urban space, with
landscaping, wider boulevards and green
open spaces. In addition, dedicated left-turn
lanes at each intersection will help improve
overall traffic flow. All these changes
support successful urban revitalization by
encouraging the development of attractive
and pedestrian-friendly places for people to
live, work, shop and play. Read on for more
details on how the transformation is taking
Davis Drive from messy to marvelous.
canopies are here
If you’ve been travelling along Davis Drive lately, you’ll notice an exciting
development taking shape at the future Longford/Parkside Drive
vivastation. Construction of the platforms is taking shape. The steel
canopies have been installed and the glass will be fitted into place in
the next little while. The new sleek, modern vivastations are passenger friendly and
will provide comfort, convenience and accessibility for riders. Crews have also started
the platforms at Main and Southlake Hospital.
By the end of the project, there will be three centre-lane vivastations [at Longford/
Parkside, Main and Southlake Hospital] with each having two platforms [one eastbound
and one westbound]. East of Roxborough Road, Viva will continue on in mixed traffic with
curbside stops at Alexander/Huron Heights and Leslie. The final stop will be at Highway
404, where a new commuter parking lot will connect Viva, GO Transit and York Region
Transit [YRT]. Only Viva, GO Transit and responding emergency vehicles are permitted
to use the rapidway. YRT will continue to service residential areas staying curbside, and
travelling on and off Davis as it does today to feed the rapid transit network.
PA system has both live and
recorded announcements;
automatic volume levels adjust
based on time of day.
Tinted glass enhances comfort,
reduces glare and improves visibility.
Vivastations can accommodate
two vehicles as well as future LRT.
Innovative canopy design
hangs over the vehicle,
ensuring comfortable
boarding and disembarking.
Riders can easily keep track
of arrivals and service
announcements in real-time
with the message board.
Motion-activated heaters
provide warmth while the
new automated entry doors
minimize heat loss.
Security surveillance and
intercom for emergency
assistance on platform.
Raised tiles along the platform
edge provide greater awareness
for the visually impaired.
Security cameras are
installed at key points
around the platform.
Emergency call
button allows for twoway communication
and triggers blue
pulsing lights.
Signage helps direct
riders with ease
and clarity.
Fare payments made
easy. Use cash, debit,
credit, monthly
passes or the new
PRESTO card.
Designated waiting
area is marked for
those who have
paid their fare and
validated their ticket.
Glass enclosure
helps riders stay
dry and sheltered
all year round.
important changes at intersections
As the Davis Drive rapidway progresses, we’ll be moving
into the next phase of construction that includes building
centre bus lanes, station platforms and canopies between
Yonge Street and Southlake Hospital. To complete this
work in the median, eastbound and westbound lanes will
be shifting to their final location. As a result, this requires
important changes to how pedestrians and motorists
access and use intersections. These important changes are
anticipated to start taking place later this fall and signage
will be posted at that time to help everyone navigate the
changes safely.
transformation you can see!
Standing at Yonge and Davis, you can look down at Davis
and see the installation of boulevards and planters is well
underway. As you travel to your destination you’ll notice
planters with interlocking paving stones and concrete
sidewalks are in areas from Yonge Street to Longford/
Parkside Drive. Any final touches and the planting of
trees, shrubs and grasses will be completed in 2016.
Road widening and base-layer paving advanced this
summer. Although the base-layer pavement may
appear uneven or sloped, it ensures Davis remains
accessible. The pavement will remain that way until
work in the middle of the road is completed. The final
layer of pavement will be applied in the final stages of
construction for an overall smooth finish.
A new dedicated left-turn signal
• Intersections will have dedicated
left-turn traffic signals.
• Drivers can only turn left when
the left-turn arrow is illuminated.
• Left turns are not permitted when
through traffic has the right-of-way.
New U-turns
• To access mid-block entrances on
the other side of the road, motorists
can make U-turns at signaled
intersections when the left-turn
signal is illuminated. Watch for
signs that state “U-turn permitted”.
Pedestrian crossing
• Accessible pedestrian signals will be
at every signalized intersection and
will include an audible countdown.
• A visual countdown signal will
indicate how many seconds
pedestrians have left to safely
cross the street.
Davis Drive
Highway 7
• At the three vivastations on Davis,
pedestrians will have the option to
cross Davis in one or two timed stages.
There will be a pedestrian waiting area
in the middle of the crosswalk where
pedestrians can stop, push the “walk”
button, and wait for the next walk signal to
safely cross the second half of the street.

Crews have started preparing for
construction along the corridor. During
this pre-construction phase, these teams
are more accurately documenting existing
conditions above and below the ground.
This work is mainly conducted during offpeak driving hours and sometimes requires
lane closures. For the remainder of the
year, the closures will be in accordance
with the vivaNext, Town of Newmarket and
York Region’s comprehensive lane closure
strategy to ensure community access.
To help accommodate future population growth in York Region, the vivaNext rapid
transit plan of bus rapid transit, subway extensions and light rail transit will create
a rapid transit system that will make it easy to travel in and around York Region and
connect to other transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
