Age UK History
Age UK History
 The 1930s Depression and World War II brought hardship
to everyone in Britain, and older people were especially vulnerable.
Many families had lost their main breadwinner, or become separated.
There was no welfare state and the remaining 'poor law' provision up to
this time was woefully inadequate.
 In 1940
a group of individuals, governmental and voluntary
organisations came together to discuss how this situation could be
improved. The Old People’s Welfare Committee was born.
 In the 1950s to 1960s, with the advent of the welfare state,
government money became available to fund work with older people. It
also became involved with projects for older people in the UK,
establishing day centres and pioneering the building of better housing
for older people.
Age UK History
 In the 1970s to 1980s, much of it became completely
independent of government, continued to develop successful
fundraising and awareness-raising initiatives, was launched to
raise funds through commercial activities.
 Since 1990s, when the UK Government market-oriented
reforms, it had a larger space for development, and launched
many new services.
 In particular, it provided warmly services for the elderly
people almost 100 million pounds during the winter, and
pushed the Government to take a new public welfare.
Age UK Vision

 have the opportunity to live healthier longer lives and
to enjoy a sense of well-being
Age UK Vision

comfortable and which enable them to lead fulfilling
lives
 have opportunities to participate and contribute as
volunteers, active citizens, good neighbours, family members,
and workers
 enjoy the benefits of longer life, wherever they are in the
world

From another point of view,
organisations have always
been in a good cooperative
relation with the
government, have
undertaken many service
projects from the
government. Thus, the
government can free itself
from the general services
and spend more time to
focus on the policy making,

mean that government
