Annual Program Review
Program/Discipline: Psychology
Date: October 15, 2007
Trends and Relevant Data
1. Has there been any change in the status of your program or area? (Have you
shifted departments? Have new degrees or certificates been created by your
program? Have you added or deleted courses? Have activities in other
programs impacted your area or program? For example, a new nursing
program could cause greater demand for life-science courses.) If not, skip to
#2.Note: curricular changes should be addressed under 12-14.
Psychology continues its membership in the Arts, Languages,
and Social Sciences Division which began the 2004-05 academic
year. Recent changes in the program curriculum include the
deletion of Psych 29, Altered States of Consciousness and Psych
100, Essentials of Psychology. In addition, two courses are now
offered online: Psych 1 General Psychology and Psych 11 Life Span
Development.
2. Have there been any significant changes in enrollment, retention, success
rates, or student demographics that impact your discipline? If so, please
include data sheets (Excel or Word format) showing these changes. (Please
see data sheets following item 14.)
• Comparing data from F06 with F07 demonstrate:
(1)
Enrollment increase of 48%.
(2)
Active section increase of 11%.
• Comparing data from 2005-06 with 2006-07 demonstrate:
(1) Enrollment decreased by 15%.
(2) Active sections decreased by 14%.
(3) Retention and Success rates decreased by about 2%.
• Comparing data trends for the last 5 years demonstrate:
(1)
Trend toward fewer sections with high variability
across semesters.
(2)
Steady enrollment with recent decreases and F07
increase.
(3)
Retention and Success rate trends toward slight
decreases.
•
Comparing data trends for the last 5 years by campus site
demonstrate:
(1) Consistently low enrollment at Mendocino Coast, Eureka
Downtown, and Klamath-Trinity sites.
(2) Shift away from offering off-campus courses (e.g.,
broadcast distance education) due to low enrollments.
(3) Much stronger enrollment in online classes with lower
retention and success rates compared to non-online
classes.
Other Resources
3. Occupational programs must review the update of their labor-market data,
some of it provided by Institutional Research, to illustrate that their
program:

4. Do you have needs (professional development, library resources, and so
forth) not previously required by the discipline or not previously addressed
in budget or equipment considerations? Please describe.
There have been no changes in program need for resources.
5. Does your discipline need additional support from Student Services beyond
that previously provided?
There have been no changes in program need for Student
Services support.

to Eureka.
Do you need more full-time faculty? Associate faculty? If yes, explain why and
be sure to include data sheets justifying the need.
With three full-time faculty, the Eureka campus is well staffed. The
Del Norte campus relies on a dual discipline full-timer and part-time
staff while Mendocino Coast, Arcata, and Klamath-Trinity offer
psychology courses taught by part-time faculty. Both DN and MC
have had recently lost full-time faculty whose assignments included
teaching two sections of psychology each semester. Recently, a
search for a Del Norte full-time psychology/sociology instructor was
suspended due to budget limitations. This search will, presumably,
continue next academic year.
7. Complete the Staff Employment Grid below (please list full- and part-time
staff numbers in separate rows:
Staff members not assigned to psychology beyond the division
support staff.
Do you need more full-time staff? Part-time staff? If yes, explain why and be
sure to include data sheets justifying the need.
There is no need at this time for additional staff support.
8. If necessary, to clarify your needs, please comment on current available staff
and distribution of FTE's for contract and part-time faculty. Describe
strengths and weaknesses of faculty/staff as appropriate to program's
current status or future development.
The Eureka psychology program is well staffed with full-time
faculty. When Deanna Herrera-Thomas returns, all Eureka
psychology sections will be taught by tenured faculty.
The Klamath-Trinity site has a part-time instructor who regularly
teaches a section or two of psychology. The Del Norte site expects
to have a full time instructor with a split assignment including
psychology. The Mendocino Coast site could benefit from a similar
full-time instructor with an assignment split among psychology and
sociology. Budgetary concerns as well as decreasing enrollment in
MC argue against additional staffing.
The pool of associate faculty is satisfactory.
Staff support for psychology across the three sites is sufficient.
Facilities
9. Comment on facilities the program uses, their current adequacy, and any
immediate needs. Have your discipline’s facilities needs changed? If so,
how? Please provide a data-based justification for any request that
requires new or additional facilities construction, renovation, remodeling
or repairs.
At the Eureka campus, beginning in Fall, 2006, Psychology courses
were moved from the Forum to Creative Arts. This change has been
problematic as the (non standard) lecture hall (CA 113) is in
disrepair and CA 109 has an inadequate LCD projection system for
the large class setting. In CA 113, most of the permanent desks
have not had desk tops for many years. Nor are permanent desks
conducive to small group interactions. Last year, temporary desks
were placed in the front of the classroom the first week of classes.
Many of these are broken as well. Students continue to sit in seats
with no desktop for writing. On a positive note, there is a computer
linked to the internet and LCD projector. Unfortunately, the screen
is at the back of the stage far from the students. Repeated
requests, both formal and informal, to repair the seating and move
the screen have been ignored.
The facilities at DN, MC, KT, Arcata, and Eureka Downtown are
satisfactory.
Equipment
10. Have your discipline’s equipment needs changed? If so, how? Is equipment
in need of repair outside of your current budget? Please provide a data-based
justification for any request that requires a new or additional budget allotment.
Psychology does not have equipment needs.
Learning Outcomes Assessment Update
11. How has your area or program been engaged in student learning outcomes
assessment?
a.
Summarize your results.
b.
What did your program learn from these results that enabled you to
improve teaching and learning in the discipline?
c.
How have part-time faculty been made aware of the need to assess
SLOs?
Psychology has not engaged in student learning outcomes
assessment. Course outlines were recently revised to include
student learning outcomes. This will be followed by a systematic
assessment of these outcomes. The only data we have at this time
include student retention, success, and grade distribution.
Curriculum Update
12. Identify curricular revisions, program innovations, and new initiatives
undertaken in the last year.
All of the psychology course outlines have been revised within the
last 18 months. In the past year we have deleted two courses:
Psych 29 Altered States of Consciousness and Psych 100 Essentials
of Psychology. In addition, we have added two online courses
recently: Psych 1 General Psychology and Psych 11 Life Span
Development.

Goals and Plans
13. Identify curricular revisions, program innovations, and new initiatives
planned for the next year.
We will consider co-listing courses in human sexuality and gender
with Sociology.
14. Complete the grid below
See grid for #12
15. If you have recently undergone a comprehensive review, attach your Quality
Improvement Plan if applicable.
We are scheduled for a comprehensive review for 2011.
16. If you do not have a QIP, what goals and plans does your area have for the
coming year?
The department goals include developing an assessment method for
measuring student learning outcomes. In addition, we want to
increases course fill percentage, student retention, and student
success rates.
