C. Improvements or Rationale for Action: (Provide a brief summary of the major
accomplishments and achievements of your department during the past year. Comment
on whether your facilities, budget, equipment, and staffing are adequate based on the
services provided and the number of students served. Discuss what your operations,
staffing and facilities needs may be in the next three years.)
The judicial affairs program, as part of the comprehensive program process, revised its
mission, goals, and learning outcomes (program and student). The mission and goal
statements were simplified and more closely aligned with the College’s mission and the
division’s vision statement and goal.
New mission statement: Judicial Affairs administers a student conduct system which
supports the integrity of the academic and student community and protects student rights.
New goals: to maintain updated policies and practices and educate the campus
community on the code of conduct.
Review of the principle users of the student conduct code document revealed: 1)
dissatisfaction with the format of the document and clarity of language, and 2) the lack of
a formal benchmarking review process for the processes incorporated in the code. To
these ends the VP SS&LS and the Board Policy and Procedure Service through the
Community College League of California (CCLC) undertook the process to review and
update the student conduct code with an eye towards ensuring that the code incorporates
new and updated laws and regulations, make clear student rights, and making the
document more easily understood. The revised code is making its way through the
college’s governance process.
Vice President Student Services and Learning Support Recommendation
Comments: The judicial affairs function is primarily conducted by the Executive
Director of Student Development working closely with the Director of Residential Life.
The program must do more to educate students on expected behavior during the first
week of the fall semester.
