BSC Scope/Function
To recommend and support educational programs, student support services, and matriculation policies that enhance retention,
persistence, and academic success of basic skills students.
1. To promote the use of effective practices in developmental education for administrative, student services, and
instructional programs.
2. To provide professional development regarding effective practices in developmental education.
3. To work with Institutional Research in tracking basic skills students from entry to completion.
4. To assess and evaluate the programs designed to improve student success.

ACTION ITEMS
BSC Statement of
Support
The statement was approved as amended during the committee
meeting. The statement is:
The Basic Skills Committee supports the District’s mission by
providing students opportunities to enhance the skills they need to be
successful in college courses required for their career and/or transfer
goals.
During the 2011-12 year, the committee will focus on:
finding ways to increase student success and retention rates in
basic skills classes involving reading, writing, and math so that
students are better prepared for their academic and career
goals;
providing training for CR instructors so that they can better
understand and teach basic skills students; and
generally supporting best practices to achieve these ends.

Breakdown of
Expenditures
BSC Funding
The committee discussed the consultant’s ESOL feasibility study.
Erin agreed to meet with the Multicultural and Diversity Committee to
further discuss outstanding questions.
The breakdown did not address outstanding requests. The BSC will
work with Business Office to ascertain how expenditure information
can be tracked.
The committee discussed the need to link the funding proposal rubric

to the BSC mission, the strategic plan, the action plans, and the items
noted on the funding request form. The committee agreed that the
rubric must be simple and easily understood. Keith agreed to provide a
rough draft rubric for the committee’s review and discussion at its
next meeting.
