REDWOODS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Meeting of the Basic Skills Committee October 19, 2012 FM 107 9:00a.m – 9:55a.m Minutes/Notes BSC Mission Statement Our mission is to improve the retention, persistence, and success of basic skills students BSC Scope/Function To recommend and support educational programs, student support services, and matriculation policies that enhance retention, persistence, and academic success of basic skills students. 1. To promote the use of effective practices in developmental education for administrative, student services, and instructional programs. 2. To provide professional development regarding effective practices in developmental education. 3. To work with Institutional Research in tracking basic skills students from entry to completion. 4. To assess and evaluate the programs designed to improve student success. 5. To allocate and oversee expenditures of BSI categorical funds. 1. Call to Order: Harry Pyke, Vinnie Peloso, Keith Snow-Flamer, and Erin. Anita Janis joined us at 9:35am 2. Approve Notes: They were approved 3. Action Items 3.1 Approve Fall Basic Skills Proposal Only one proposal so we have decided to extend the Fall call until October 29th. Erin will send out the call. Extended Math Jam Proposal- Why only outreach to Arcata and McKinleyville? Recommend sharing this with the branch campuses. Approved for $6000. 4. Discussion Items 4.1 Review First Year Experience ProposalRecommend this be presented by Dean Anderson to the Math and English Departments since it has been a year and a half since this was presented. Then, when the Senate approaches math and English people to serve on the steering committee. a. Changing Steering Committee to a Faculty Chair. b. Changing Enrollment Services Rep to EOPS c. Change $19,000 amount set aside from Student Success Pilot Faculty Stipend to Student Success Pilot Funds. SARCO did not approve faculty stipend. Looking to have an Advisor be the coordinator instead. d. Change Goal #1 to include those who are non-native speakers and those who assess into basic 1 skills classes. e. Page 2, Row 2 (Target Population) to include students who place into Read 360 as well as Eng 350. 4.2 Website Update Link to the Poppy Copy and then 3CSN. Erin will work with Lorie Walsh to update. 4.3 Actions to support Annual Plan Initiative “Provide professional development training for working with basic skills students” Anita is our liaison to Faculty Development.
