SPECIFIC TOPIC: Management of Assaultive Behavior
DESCRIPTION OF SELECTED TOPIC:
Annual in-service training program for adult and juvenile probation officers who are often exposed to potentially
dangerous situations while working in the field. The training utilizes protective skills in managing assaultive
behavior on the part of suspects and clients.
DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH THE SPECIFIC TOPIC:
The training will consist of concepts and techniques of weaponless defense that emphasize safety and protective
control for both the officer and the suspect.

SPECIFIC OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:
The officer will learn and demonstrate safety techniques and courses of action to take when confronted by an
aggressive client.
CRITICAL THINKING COMPONENT:
Officers will analyze situational challenges and respond in accordance with training techniques. They will identify
specific behaviors or symptoms and determine the appropriate course of action.

It should be noted that the Chancellor’ Office, in response to a request by Peace Officers Standards and Training
(POST), has granted an exception regarding the number of lab hours for ½ unit of credit for this type of training. In
order to accommodate the 8-hour day and eliminate overtime concerns it is permissible to give ½ unit of credit for
24 lab hours.
Textbook Exception
Weaponless defense and defensive tactics involves hands-on activity and instruction. The entire course is conducted
in a gym setting on mats. It features extensive demonstration and physical activity. A textbook is not appropriate.
