Bulleted lists may be used to clearly organize information. Section 1 ‐ Program Information 1.0 Name of Program: Computer Information Systems Date: 10/12/13 1.1 Program Review Authors (include names and campus locations): Chris Romero, Dan Calderwood, Mark Renner 1.2 Dean’s Signature: Date: 1.3 Individual Program Information # of Degrees offered: 1 # of Certificates offered: 2 1.3.1 State briefly how the program functions support the college mission: CIS supports the career and technical education goal of the mission statement. 1.3.2 State briefly program highlights/accomplishments: This past summer and fall CIS faculty applied for and successfully obtained Cisco Academy status for CR’s CIS‐Networking program. In conjunction with the new status is the requirement for CIS faculty to be certified to teach Cisco Academy courses. Full‐time CIS faculty engaged in intense Cisco training over the summer and fall and have passed Cisco certification exams. Using CTEA funds, all of the networking‐lab‐student routers and switches were upgraded to meet Cisco hardware and software requirements. Section 2 ‐ Data Analysis 2.1 Enrollment & Fill Rate Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp Select your program and click on: Enrollments & fill rates Comment if checked: Overall CIS enrollment has declined 18%. After analyzing enrollment by section, core CIS courses (12, Enrollment ☒ 30, 31, and 98) declines are less than the District decline (5% decrease). CIS‐1 however, declined by 30%. Two major factors contributed to this decline: 1) 14 CIS 1 sections were offered in 2011‐2012 vs 10 sections in 2012‐2013. 2) As disciplines streamline their PLOs and therefore their programs, several have eliminated CIS 1 as a degree requirement. Comment if checked: Fill Rate ☐ 2.3 Success & Retention Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp Select your program and click on: Success & Retention Success ☐ Comment if checked: Retention ☒ Comment if checked: CIS retention rate is four points below the District. The primary factor contributing to this difference is retention in online courses, which is 74% for CIS. 2.4 Persistence Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp Select your program and click on: Persistence of Concentrators ☒ Comment: Persistence is below the district average. Our feeling is many students are employed in the networking field before graduating. In addition, the Tops code for CIS‐Networking is 0708.10. All core networking courses (CIS 30, 31, and 98) are listed under this Tops code; hence, not represented in this data. In addition, CIS programming courses are listed under the 0707.10 Tops code and not represented in this data. Furthermore awards data presented does not include any CIS‐Networking degrees or certificates. We believe the data represents only CIS 1 and CIS 100 data. Student Equity Group Data 2.7 Enrollments Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp by group Select your program and click on ~ by Student Equity Group next to Enrollments & fill rates Comment: The CIS program traditionally is underrepresented by females. CTEA funds were used for training and outreach to try and increase the percentage of non‐traditional students enrolled in CIS courses. 2.8 Success & Retention Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp by group Select your program and click on ~ by Student Equity Group next to success & retention Comment: While below District average, our Success rates by gender are up for both male and female. Female success increased by 7%! Last year our Hispanic success rate was 41%, it has climbed 40 points to 81% well above the 67% District average. Retention of this group is also quite high at 93% also above the District average of 87%. Faculty Information 2.10 Faculty Review and interpret data by clicking here or going to: http://www.redwoods.edu/District/IR/Program_Select.asp Select your program and click on: Faculty (FT/PT) & FTES/FTEF Comment: FTEF dropped by .6 primarily due to the retirement of the F/T instructor at Mendocino. FTES/FTEF ratio dropped due to fewer sections offered, which curtailed enrollment. Due to the retirement mentioned, the P/T faculty percentage adjusted up and is close to the District percentage. CTE/Occupational programs The following Labor Market section should be completed by all CTE/Occupational programs. Only CTE/Occupational programs need to complete this section (2.9). 2.9 Labor Market Data Refer to the California Employment Development Division: http://www.edd.ca.gov/ www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov
Provide a narrative that addresses the following: a. Documentation of labor market demand b. Non‐duplication of other training programs in the region c. Effectiveness as measured by student employment and program completions. Narrative: a) According to the California Employment Development Department, Network and Computer Systems Administrator is the fastest growing job in Humboldt County, estimated to grow by 45.5%. b) There are no other computer network training programs in Humboldt County at this time. c) CIS has a close working relationship with several local businesses (Kokatat, Nylex.net, NMS) that indicate a strong satisfaction with student employees from the CIS‐Networking program. Based on an exit survey conducted by IR in the Fall of 2012, 100% CIS13‐14PR10_14.docx 5/1/2014 Page 4 of CIS students were either very satisfied (75%) or somewhat satisfied (25%) with CR, and 58.3% of students who participated in the CIS program are employed in a job related to their CIS training, the majority of those locally. In addition, the percentage of participants with high satisfaction with their jobs increased dramatically from 10% before attending CR to 40% after attending CR, and mean salary increased $10,000 per year. Summary of Section 2 Overall, what did you learn from the data provided in this section? Be sure to indicate if your discoveries apply to the entire district, or if they vary by site. CIS Networking core courses’ statistics remain strong, while CIS 1 and 100 enrollment and fill rates are down, due to fewer sections offered and an overall decline in demand for these courses. Section 3 – Critical Reflection of Assessment Activities Curriculum & Assessment Data What courses, if any are not on track with regard to a 2‐year assessment cycle? Section 8‐ PRC Response by section (completed by PRC after reviewing the program review) 8.0 The response will be forwarded to the author and the supervising Director and Vice President: S.1. Program Information: Completed S.2. Data Analysis: Acceptable. Good analysis of factors impacting enrollment. Might be helpful to think about the exclusion of CIS‐1 from programs streamlining their requirements in terms of CRs lack of a General Education technology requirement, which is an expectation of the ACCJC. S.3. Critical Reflection of Assessment Activities: Acceptable. Program assessment reports are on track for completion in a 2‐year cycle. Both course and program assessment is ongoing. Specific changes are listed in the program review report, but there is very limited discussion of how assessment results led to these changes. The PLO assessment reports do not reflect the basis for the changes listed in the program review. Program changes are only loosely linked to assessment findings. S.4. Evaluation of Previous Plans: Acceptable. Included status of previous planning S.5. Planning: Acceptable. PRC recommends linking to strategic and education master plans. S.6. Resource Requests: None CIS13‐14PR10_14.docx 5/1/2014 Page 10
