Request for Tenure Track Faculty Program: Marine Science Technology/Biological Science Position Initiator: Teresa Sholars 1. Program(s) Supported by the Discipline: MST AA degree; MST certificate of Achievement; Biological and Physical Science Program and all GE courses 2. Job Description. Separate requests are required for each position sought. Please indicate if this request is site specific and the location(s). This position was held by Greg Grantham who retired in May 2012. Since Fall 2012 semester, Teresa Sholars has directed the students who are in the MST program and hopefully will graduate this Spring 2013 semester. Our local population for new students has declined because they have been counseled to not depend on the program and/or pursue a MST degree/certificate due to the future uncertainty of the program since a full-time faculty replacement was not hired for 2012-2013. In light of this, we have hired new adjuncts to teach classes that are required for the program. Unfortunately in OCEAN 10 and OCEAN 11 there was a 50% drop rate in enrollment (in Fall 2012) due to the inexperience of the brand new instructor (who we did not hire back). Also, there was a similar drop rate in METEO 1, an elective for the program. This Spring 2013 semester, we have hired another new adjunct to teach the required BIO 25 (Marine and Anadromous Fishes). Seasoned adjuncts have also been hired to teach required courses in the program. Dr. David Flaim is teaching BIO 15 this semester. (He teaches Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology for us and at Mendocino College). Tanya Smart (who has taught ENVSC 10 and ENVSC 11 for us previously is teaching Marine Mammals this semester). To summarize the following people have “replaced” some of the courses that Greg has taught in the program: -OCEAN 10 & 11: Jay Patton -BIO 15: David Flaim -BIO 25: Renate Eberl -BIO 27: Tanya Smart Teresa Sholars and Greg Grantham have shared teaching BIO 1 (Fall semester with Sholars; Spring semester with Grantham). We are not teaching BIO 1 this spring semester. Attached is a list of the current students in the program and which courses in the program they have taken. We have used this list as a guide for Spring 2013 scheduling. 3. Please check ONE of the following categories: Faculty Replacement Position, Growth Position or New Program/Discipline. Provide related information. FT/PT Ratio: Indicate which statement/s are confirmed by the data: (0 -5 points) X Program has no full-time faculty FT/PT ration below 50/50 percent FT/PT ratio below 60/40 percent r3/12/12 pg 2 FT/PT ratio below 75/25 percent FT/PT ratio results in critical lack of effective oversight for associate faculty Reliable pool of well-qualified associate faculty is unavailable (In the case of non-teaching faculty positions, the criteria will be the deviation from norms obtained from like institutions) Provide justification and documentation. The only full time science instructor on the CRMC campus is Teresa Sholars. She teaches only one required course in the program (BIO 1) although this year she is supervising all of the BIO 40 internship classes (total for the 2012-2013 year is 8). She is planning to go on reduced load 2013-2014 and retire at the end of Spring 2014 semester. 5. Program/Student Outcomes (0 – 5 points) Provide a narrative justifying need for full-time faculty in order to maintain and/or improve program and student learning outcomes (one-page max), based on the following: (0 – 5 points) Demonstrate a clear need for FT faculty in order to maintain program outcomes Justification demonstrates a clear need for FT faculty in order to achieve student learning outcomes Narrative: A full time instructor is necessary to teach the classes, do the assessment, do program review, oversee the internship and recruit new students. The internship program is the lead in to jobs for graduating students. This requires a full time continual relationship with employers. At the end of this semester there will be no full time science presence at CRMC. It will be difficult to supervise the lab tech, hire enough adjuncts and recruit for new students. It has been difficult to find part time qualified instructors in the region to teach the required classes in this program. Hiring inexperienced faculty last semester resulted in a 50% drop rate in three MST classes. This has the potential to negatively affect the future of the program.
