College of the Redwoods CURRICULUM PROPOSAL DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE Renewable every five years Date: 4/17/08 1. Division: MSE 2. Course ID and Number: Math 380 3. Course Title: Elementary Algebra 4. Distance Education Method: Instructional TV on cable Interactive TV on videoconference Online 5. Describe in detail how this course will apply the same standards of course quality as a traditional classroom course (attach course outline and syllabus). The course is being offered in a hybrid format, meeting 50%-75% of the time in-class and the remaining percentage completed online. During the class sessions, there will be lectures, students' questions can be addressed, and the class will do the collaborative, problem-solving groupwork that is currently done in traditional Math 380 courses. The online portion of the course will be carried out using course management software such as MyMathLab or Blackboard, in conjunction with an online testing system such as MyMathLab and Optimath. Students will complete unit pretests, homework, and unit tests using this software. Students will also have a weekly written assignment to complete as well. The written assignments allow for students to get feedback on their use of mathematical notation. There will also be a written midterm and final exam. Online assignments, currently via Optimath, are used in a traditional Math 380 course as well. Students benefit tremendously from the online assignments; they get immediate feedback, see problem solutions, and get additional, individualized practice to help them master the material. 6. Describe how this course will include regular effective contact between the instructor and students. Since this course is offered as a hybrid course with at least half of the amount of class time as a 'regular' class there will be regular effective contact between the instructor and students. Course management software will be used, so that students will have easy access to email and so that discussion forums can be used. Weekly written assignments and collaborative, problem-solving lab write ups will provide students with feedback about their use of mathematical notation. Curriculum Approval: April 8, 2005 (rev.11/8/05) Academic Senate Approval: May 6, 2005 May 29, 2016 7. Describe how standard methods of assessment will be adapted to the distance education format. Since students in the traditional Math 380 courses also complete online assignments, written assignments, and participate in collaborative, problem solving activities the assessments are the same. The hybrid course will have more of these assessments completed online. The unit exams, written midterm and final are also always proctored to hold students to the same academic standards.
