Meeting of the First-Year Experience (FYE) Committee
April 25, 2013, 1:15 – 3:00, in SS203D
AGENDA AND NOTES
FYE Mission
Our mission is to improve the retention, persistence, and success of first-year college students.
Present: Dave Arnold, Steve Bevier, Bob Brown, Sheila Hall, Pam Kessler, Ruth Moon, and Erin Wall.
1. Call to Order: Sheila called the meeting to order at 1:20 p.m.
2. Review Notes from April 11, 2013: Approved
3. Action Items: None
4. Discussion Items:
4.1 View “Getting Started” video: The video was reviewed. The video outlines the steps students
need to take to “Get Started” at CR. It was suggested that we link the video to the first new student
email and to the CR Facebook page. Sheila said it will be recommended that the video be shown in
the GS 6 classes.
4.2 Next Steps for “Getting Started” flowchart: Sheila and Ruth will work with Paul DeMark and
Erin Jones to make the revisions to the flowchart. It was suggested that we copy the math and
English sequence chart on the back of the flowchart.
4.3 Review Draft of math and English sequence chart: The sequence chart was reviewed. The chart
is for students who have taken the placements and want to know where they have placed in math and
English. The committee agreed we should keep the chart as basic as possible. It was suggested that
we change the title of the chart to “Interpreting Your Math and English Placement.” It was also
suggested that we include the statement “Please see an advisor” by the English 360 course. Math 372
and Math 376 might need to be listed on the chart with a statement below each course that says
“Non-credit.” It was suggested that we identify courses that meet degree requirements and those
which are transferrable and include a statement on the chart that says “Please see an advisor for the
highest level of math and English required for your educational goal.” The courses should be listed
with the highest level on the top. Sheila showed everyone an older version of the English and Math
sequence chart. The committee liked this chart. Sheila will send a copy of this chart to Erin. Dave
sent Sheila a sheet that describes the math courses students need for particular educational goals.
The math department could update this information sheet for the advisors to use. Sheila is going to
set up a meeting with the math department so the advisors can experience Math Jam and review the
math information sheet.
4.4 Accuplacer background questions: The data from the Accuplacer background questions was
reviewed. They are using this data to identify specific students who might be good candidates for
Math Jam. Erin and Dave will draft a letter for Sheila to have sent to students who might be good
candidates for Math Jam.
5. Reports: None.
6. Future Agenda Items: What the committee will work on next year.
7. Announcements: The last meeting will be held on May 9, 2013.
8. Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 2:30.
