College of the Redwoods Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer DEVELOPMENT CRITERIA NARRATIVE & DOCUMENTATION Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission 1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives The goal of the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree is to provide students with a major that fulfills the general requirements for California State University transfer in geology. This degree provides the course work and units consistent with the Transfer Model Curriculum. This degree prepares students to pursue seamlessly a baccalaureate degree in Geology. The Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree is designed to prepare students for a seamless transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in Geology or similar major. Upon completion of the AS-T in Geology, students will be able to apply methods of scientific inquiry to investigate the natural world, collect and analyze data, and synthesize this information into clear reports, apply mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems and applications, apply geologic principles to describe how earth materials and landscapes change over time, and describe the basic elements of plate tectonic theory. 2. Catalog Description A student may earn an Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree pending CCCCO approval. The Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in Geology at a CSU campus. Students completing the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. To meet the requirements for this degree the students must: 1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: a. Complete the California State University General Education‐Breadth pattern (CSU GE Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) pattern. b. A minimum of 18 semester units in the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree. 2. Obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. To complete the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree, students must earn a C or better in required courses for the major. A P (Pass) grade is not acceptable for courses in this degree. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, 1 Geology is the study of Earth using scientific methodology and observation to understand the processes and phenomena that shape the planet over time. It is an interdisciplinary approach that uses the fundamental concepts of biology, chemistry, and physics to investigate landforms and the internal processes of Earth. The Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer for transfer degree provides a student with the general requirements for transferring to a CSU or other four-year school to earn a degree in geology, geophysics, or similarly named earth science field. This program includes eight units of geology course work, two semesters of chemistry, and a two semesters of calculus. Although it is not required, students are also encouraged to take two semesters of physics that is typically required for 4-year degree in geology. Program Outcomes: Students who complete the Associate in Science in Geology for Transfer degree should be able to: a. Apply methods of scientific inquiry to investigate the natural world. b. Collect and analyze data, and synthesize this information into clear reports. c. Apply mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems and applications. d. Apply geologic principles to describe how earth materials and landscapes change over time. e. Describe the basic elements of plate tectonic theory. 2 Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC) Template for Geology CCC Major or Area of Emphasis: Geology TOP Code: 191400 CSU Major(s): Geology Total Units: 26 (all units are minimum semester units) Template # 2004 Rev. 3: 09/01/14 In the four columns to the right under the College Program Requirements, enter the college’s course identifier, title and the number of units comparable to the course indicated for the TMC.
