Statement of Program Goals and Objectives: Effective communication consistently ranks among the top skills sought after by employers. The field of communication covers a wide range of topics and includes courses that enhance understanding and develop skills for transfer preparation, professional development, and personal growth. The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer degree will provide the foundational knowledge in Communication Studies to students who want to earn a Baccalaureate Degree in Communication Studies at any of the CSU campuses. The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer degree enhances opportunities for employment and promotion in fields including education, law enforcement, law, health care, management, organizational development, psychology, public service, sales, training, entertainment, and social services. Item 2. Catalog Description A student may earn an Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer degree pending CCCCO approval. The Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer degree is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies at a CSU campus. Students completing the Associate in Arts in Communication Studies for Transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Courses offered by the Communication Studies Department meet a wide range of lower division transfer requirements for CSU and UC colleges. The department offers many courses designed to prepare students for transfer to a variety of disciplines including Business, Communication, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, Education, Liberal Arts, Pre-Law, Mass Media, Management, Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work. To meet the requirements for this degree the students must: 1. Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: a. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education – Breadth Requirements. b. A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district. 2. Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0. ADTs also require that students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A “P” (Pass) grade is not an acceptable grade for courses in the major.
