Office of Instruction and Student Development Update April 18, 2014 AP 4021: Revitalization, Suspension, or Discontinuance Process President Smith’s approval of the two Program Analysis Request Forms (Appendix A) on April 10 initiated the formation of two AP 4021 Task Forces to analyze the Business Technology and Administration of Justice programs. The administration and the Academic Senate Co-Presidents have identified the following people to serve on both Task Forces. Two Deans or Directors not connected to the program An Academic Senate Co-President Two faculty members who are not members of the program or division A representative appointed by the President Business Technology Erin Wall (Co-Chair) & Ron Waters Administration of Justice Joe Hash (Co-Chair) & Julia Peterson Bob Brown (Co-Chair) Shannon Sullivan & Tony Sartori Bob Brown (Co-Chair) Jay Dragten & Kevin Yokoyama Brady Reed Lynn Thiesen We are going to try to get some of the Task Force work completed by the end of this academic year. We expect the Task Forces to begin meeting shortly after Institutional Research provides data to the Task Force Co-Chairs on April 24. I am going to meet with the Co-Chairs of the Task Forces next Tuesday, April 22, to make sure that the AP 4021 process is clearly understood. It goes without saying that the members of the Task Forces are aware of the importance of their work and that they take the necessary time to analyze and discuss the data. I will make it clear at the Co-Chair meeting that although we are going to start the review of the data now, it is important that the Task Force’s work is not rushed and that all relevant data is thoroughly reviewed. Moreover, it is critical that the Deans, Directors and faculty who are responsible for, or teach in, the program under analysis are given the opportunity to provide information to the Task Forces. A Stipend and Reassign Time Committee (SARTCO) request has been submitted for Human Resources/CRFO negotiation to consider compensation for faculty to work over the summer if the Task Forces feel that it will be necessary to extend the analysis timeline. Again, we do not want to rush this process nor do we want our colleagues to question the integrity of the AP 4021 process. Business Technology Administration of Justice 1st Meeting Wednesday, April 30 9:00am - 11:00am Wednesday, April 30 2:00pm to 4:00pm 2nd Meeting Monday, May 5 9:00am to 11:00am Monday, May 5 3:00pm to 5:00pm 3rd Meeting Friday, May 9 8:00am to10:00am Friday, May 9 10:00am to 12:00pm Subsequent to review of all of the relevant information, the Task Forces, working with the Office of Institutional Research, will present their findings, including recommendations and a timeframe for resolution and a course of action to the President/Superintendent by June 9, unless otherwise agreed to between the Vice President and the Task Force Co-Chairs. 1 Office of Instruction and Student Development Update April 18, 2014 CR’s Participation in the Community of Practice in Acceleration The Community of Practice in Acceleration is an initiative supported by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office through 3CSN, that assists faculty with examining English and math remedial curriculum sequences and explores redesigning those sequences into accelerated pathways. Last year the English Department was applied and was selected to participate with David Holper, Peter Blakemore, and Jay Scrivner forming their team. The result was the creation of English 102, a course that takes English 350 students and prepares them for English 1A in one semester, which was piloted this semester on the Eureka campus. This year the English Department applied to participate again with a new team and Todd Olsen applied for the Math Department to also participate. Both teams received acceptance letters this past week. The English team consists of Pam Kessler, Susan Nordlof, Ruth Rhodes, and Deborah Gerth. Todd Olsen, Mike Haley, Steve Jackson, Erik Kramer and Richard Ries make up the Math team. The Math acceleration model is designed to shorten the developmental mathematics path to statistics. The accelerated “Path2Stats”course will focus on teaching the core elementary/intermediate algebra concepts using data and statistical type graphs. This course will be a departure from our traditional “one size fits all approach” to basic skills curriculum in mathematics and will be geared towards those who are non-science/math majors. The course is scheduled to run as a pilot in spring 2015. The application process was very competitive this year—a record-breaking number of faculty applicants—119 faculty members from 25 colleges applied to participate. The Basic Skills Committee is supporting faculty participation in the California Acceleration Project.
