Office of Instruction and Student Development Update April 10, 2015 Continuing Discussion of Growth Mindsets To build upon the mindset discussion we had at the last Student Success Summit we have applied to participate in 3CSN’s upcoming Cultivating a Growth Mindset community of practice for Northern California Community Colleges in fall 2015. If you’re unfamiliar with the work of 3CSN, several English and math faculty participated in 3CSN’s Acceleration communities of practice over the past few years. Their participation in the Acceleration project culminated in the development of English 102 and Math 102—two courses that may prove to have a profound impact on student success and degree completions. CR’s “Mindset” team will be comprised of Kerry Mayer, Michael Dennis, Matt McCann and Lesley Manousos. This professional development opportunity, facilitated by Mindset trainers Mary-Jo Apigo (West LA College) and Miguel Powers (Fullerton College), will give our team a chance to delve into topics related to modeling of Growth Mindset activities for the classroom with faculty from other Northern California community colleges. Thank you to the Basic Skills Committee for funding our team! If you want to know more about 3CSN’s mindset project go to: http://hom.3csn.org/. Update on SARTCO Approved Reassigned Time Positions for the 2015-16 Academic Year I am pleased to announce that we’ve filled four of the SARTCO approved faculty reassigned time positions. Kerry Mayer has agreed to serve as the Faculty Orientation Lead for next year. Gary Sokolow will continue to guide the Associate Students of College of the Redwoods (ASCR) student government. Susan Nordlof and Dana Maher have agreed to continue their efforts to rebuild our Honors program. The Assessment Coordinator position will be filled by Dave Bazard. It’s with sincerity and gratitude that I wish to thank these faculty members for stepping up to serve in these important positions. The decision on the Distance Education reassigned time position will be made shortly. Heads-up—Applied Technology Building Work to Begin Summer of 2017 The State allocated approximately thirty six million dollars to the District to upgrade our utility infrastructure. A portion of the Utility Infrastructure Project (UIP) funds have been earmarked to replace all of the HVAC systems, replace the ceiling, add new lighting, and improve ADA access to the Applied Technology (AT) building. Given the age of the building and the level of work to be completed, we anticipate that the State may require us to perform some seismic strengthening to the facility. If that is the case, we will require 30 feet of clearance around the entire AT building and limit access to it when the seismic work is being performed. We anticipate starting this project immediately at the end of the spring 2017 semester and have the work completed by the time the fall 2017 semester begins. Vice President Lindsey and his staff understand that closing the AT facility for the summer of 2017 will require finding additional classroom space and temporary work locations for staff and faculty. We’re going to try to have a few new portable classrooms operational by then. 1 Progress Report on Past AP 4021 Decisions Several instructional programs were sent through the AP 4021 Program Revitalization, Suspension and/or or Discontinuation Process in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
