Office of Instruction and Student Development Update-Week 6-February 26, 2016

Kevin Powers, author of The Yellow Birds visits CR

Hosted by the CR Book of the Year committee and CR Veteran Resource Center, author of The Yellow

Birds , Kevin Powers, visited College of the Redwoods on February 25 th . A combat Veteran of the Iraq war, Mr. Powers was thrilled to spend the afternoon with community and CR student veterans during a

Meet & Greet event held at the Eureka Vets Memorial Hall. Veterans had the opportunity to discuss aspects of the book, shared experiences both in service to our country as well as transition challenges when returning to civilian life. Writers among the group had a unique opportunity to discuss the writing process and strategies with this dynamic author.

Following the afternoon with our Veterans, Mr. Powers conducted a reading and book signing for the community in our CR Theater. A varied group of community members and students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to hear a portion of The Yellow Birds , a book written from the perspective of a young man who survived the Iraq war, as read by the author. A question and answer session resulted in deep, meaningful conversation as the audience and the author addressed the complexities of war and coming home, of life and innocence lost, and the author’s hope of answering in some small way what it was like

“over there.” Thanks goes to Crystal Morse for this story.

Website Content Managers

This week the Office of Instruction and Student Development added its support to the CR website transition efforts ( Evoq CR Website ) by informing instructional Deans of the need for faculty volunteers to manage program websites. Student Development Leaders will soon identify staff for their respective websites. This is an opportunity for faculty and staff to manage the public face of their areas.

One-Year Scheduling

The scheduling staff met three important deadlines this week as we continue to create the one-year academic schedule. First, the summer schedule draft of classes was submitted by the Deans and

Instructional Directors. Second, all fulltime faculty have received their proposed fall class assignments.

Third, the spring 2017 schedule of classes has been created and will soon be distributed to all fulltime faculty for their consideration. Associate faculty assignments for the full academic year will follow beginning with fall semester assignments.
