UCL CAREERS SERVICE Careers after Economics An occasional newsletter from your careers adviser, Jeff Riley. You can email him at j.riley@ucl.ac.uk “The Graduate Market in 2012” is a study of graduate vacancies and starting salaries at one hundred of the UK’s best-known and most successful employers, conducted by High Fliers Research during December 2011: • The UK’s leading employers are expecting to increase their graduate recruitment by 6.4% in 2012, following a rise of 2.8% in entry-level roles during 2011 and an increase of 12.6% in 2010. Vacancies dropped by 17.8% in 2009 and 6.7% in 2008. • Despite the widespread recruitment freeze at Government departments & agencies, public sector employers are planning to expand their graduate intake by 21.9% in 2012, an increase of almost 500 additional roles year-onyear. There will also be a substantial rise in the number of graduate jobs available at engineering & industrial companies (up 22.4% compared to 2011), IT & telecommunications firms (up 31.6%), high street banks (up 16.0%) and retailers (up 11.5%). • Even though the total number of vacancies is set to increase in 2012, recruiters have confirmed that a third of this year’s entry-level positions are expected to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations – either through industrial placements, vacation work or sponsorships – and therefore are not open to other students from the ‘Class of 2012’. FastStream Update The Civil Service's graduate development scheme - the Fast Stream - has confirmed that it will be welcoming a second round of applications for its 2012 intake from analytical graduates, specifically those interested in the following careers: Operational Research (see flyer below) Statistics Economics Please note that the fourth branch of the Analytical Fast Stream, the Social Research scheme, will not be accepting any further applications for a 2012 intake, nor will any of the non-analytical programmes. Such candidates will be able to apply for the 2013 recruitment exercise, which will open in the autumn. We will be accepting applications for the three schemes from 5th March to 10th April 2012, via the Civil Service website (faststream.civilservice.gov.uk). Given the specialist nature of the Analytical Fast Stream, we are looking to inform the niche of students that would be eligible to apply. This would include students studying for specific undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in Operational Research, the Management Sciences, Statistics and Economics, as well as those studying in other mathematical disciplines. As a general rule, we are looking for applicants whose studies comprises of at least 50% numerical content. Please read the marketing brochure for the Government Operational Research Service (GORS) graduate scheme. Hard copies are available upon request. Also attached is the GORS Fast Stream eFlyer, which is more suitable for cascading to students via email. The contact details for the GORS central management unit are printed on the leaflets below if students have any questions. Events – Each week UCL’s Careers Service puts on lots of different events.
