PhD employer networking event 2015 5
Welcome
Dear student
On behalf of the University I would like to welcome both visiting employer organisations and our own PhD students to this
networking event. The University of Warwick is one of the most distinguished research-intensive universities in the UK, one of
only four universities to have been ranked amongst the top universities in each and every national league table that has ever
been published. We have one of the largest and most diverse populations of PhD students in the UK, and these students are
an integral part of our academic success.
As a PhD student you will develop an impressive array of skills by the time you graduate. Your project management and
higher level critical analysis skills, research strategies and the ability to assimilate large amounts of information mean that you
have significant added value to offer an employer. Tonight’s event is an opportunity to meet employers who are active in PhD
recruitment, and many have sent representatives with a PhD themselves. Please talk to them about what they have done with
their PhD, so you can see the wide range of options available to you. In the current global economic climate, such higher level
skills that can drive innovation, facilitate investment and improve leadership and management will play a vital role in the overall
strategy for international economic growth. The University of Warwick’s strategy for increased PhD numbers contributes to this
vision by providing a pool of highly talented individuals to the wider employment market.
Our overriding aim is to prepare our research students to the highest degree intellectually and in terms of their professional
development. The intellectual and advanced skills training we provide for all our PhD students equips each of them to make an
important contribution to the wider economy – locally, regionally, nationally and on a global scale. Our PhD students are much
more than academic experts in their field of study; their education and training provides them with a wide range of skills in
project planning, team-working, presenting, problem solving, communications and enterprise. These complement their higher
level intellectual skills which should be prized in today’s highly competitive market.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite visiting employers to consider more ways of engaging with our postgraduate
student population. We would welcome your contributions to the professional development training we provide, internships
you might be able to provide, and research projects you would be interested in co-sponsoring. We already work together with
a range of employers in the mathematical sciences, laboratory sciences, and medicine – but we also have a close engagement
with private and public organisations in the social sciences and the Arts. If you are interested in working with us further we
would be delighted to hear from you.
Professor Jan Palmowski
Chair, Board of Graduate Studies
Student Careers and Skills is here to support you as you consider and investigate your career path, identify and articulate your
skills and find the best opportunities for you. We have a team of subject specialist Careers Consultants who offer one-to-one
careers guidance and a dedicated researcher section of our website at: www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/scs/pgr Successful
career development at Warwick is about you developing your personal career vision, and having the confidence and skills to
pursue these career goals. Accessing the job market is not just about getting the job you want, it is also about understanding
and developing the key skills which employers are looking for and that you will need for long-term career development and
career success. It is important for you to understand your individual motivations and values so that you can find work that is
meaningful for you. We offer a comprehensive programme of tailored workshops to support you including skills development,
alumni events, employer events and many more.

them on the issues that matter most so you’ll gain first-hand experience of the
challenges that are shaping the world.
Stimulating the fast growth of tech companies: Tech Recruitment Specialists
and Startup Incubator.
Grove Capital Management is a specialist investment firm, focused on
purchasing distressed consumer receivables. Launched in 2010 to capitalise
on market growth in the UK, Spain and other markets, Grove invested
over £100 million in its first 3 years of operations. Through its deep market
knowledge, access to superior data and agile portfolio management, Grove
sources and acquires portfolios at attractive forecast returns and drives further
performance post-purchase to maximise investor results.
Growth Intelligence is a pioneer of Predictive Marketing - a new technology that
powers marketing at B2B businesses. The tool boosts conversion rate from
telemarketing, online advertising and outbound email. Customers sync their
previous wins and losses with the platform and it predicts who their next clients
will be using open source-gathered Big Data and artificial intelligence. Growth Intel
is working with major companies including Google, American Express and BT,
delivering substantial increases in marketing ROI.
Our people understand how businesses work and it is their ingenuity,
dynamism and creativity that help anticipate and meet our clients’ needs:

partnership development enables us to overcome any recruitment challenge.
We’ve evolved to provide an incubator service with access to tailored funding,
mentoring and connections to help startups flourish in an exciting and fun
environment.
We have ambitious growth plans and are seeking driven graduates who
want a stimulating and challenging start to their careers. We will provide the
experiences, training, professional qualifications and networks to help your
career get off to the best start and put you at the heart of business – globally.
Grove is a small, entrepreneurial and analytically led investment firm backed by
two strategic shareholders; Encore Capital Group (US based NASDAQ listed)
and Blenheim Chalcot (leading UK venture capital investor).
A decade ago, CRM tools like Salesforce made it easy to see which sales leads
were going to close, later Marketing Automation software like Marketo and Hubspot
made it possible to predict which marketing prospects would purchase using
engagement data, Gi completes the picture by allowing CMOs and Sales Directors
to know the real-time probability that any arbitrary company from the universe of
global businesses will buy, whether or not they’ve engaged before.

iS Health Group
Litron Lasers

at key industry events to present the astounding results that have come about
through the digital mechanisms that are in the realm of the MyHealthFabric app.

UK offices.
iS Health Group, the award-winning healthcare communications agency,

Events and Wisper. All have been created with our unique philosophy that
maximises the opportunities for our client’s brand by working in partnership
with their customers to develop solutions that change the face of healthcare
delivery.
Litron Lasers is a manufacturer of pulsed and CW Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF lasers. All its

We provide exceptional consultancy services and advice to trustees, employers, the
public sector, as well as life insurers, banks and building societies.

training and get early exposure to stimulating and challenging client advisory work
as part of a team, to make the most of your skills.
We’ll also support you through your actuarial qualification, with generous study
leave and a dedicated study mentor. That means you can study and progress your
career at your own pace.
The group was established in 2003 by Isaac Batley and Steve Smith and
since then has successfully grown to a team of over 60 staff. iS Health Group
offers a suite of services, including medical communications, publications
planning, public affairs, global events management, market access and CME
solutions.
iS Health Group is a Cello Health business.
We welcome applications from post graduate and PhD students.
Litron was formed in 1997 and pioneered commercial photodiode energy monitors
while developing a technology base for manufacturing solid state lasers. Litron’s
first laser products were launched in 2002 and these have developed into a set
of standard models and configurations including dedicated PIV systems and high
energy pulsed lasers. With an installed base of over a thousand units the design and
manufacturing integrity of our products is truly field proven.
Litron’s philosophy is to keep all design and a significant proportion of manufacturing
in-house. As a result all electronics, both digital and analogue, mechanics, software
and all optics for the lasers are designed at Litron. This structure results in not having
to rely on third-party support when supporting our own products, a significant
customer benefit.

University of Nottingham, Loughborough University and TWI Ltd.
TRL the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory, is recognised world-wide for
transport innovation, evidential research and impartial advice. Commercially
independent with over 80 years of knowledge and experience embedded in its
history, TRL’s work is rooted in the traditional areas of road and vehicle safety,
highway engineering and maintenance. Through the decades, however, our
knowledge has expanded to encompass so many other facets that shape
and form today’s transport decisions: sustainability, attitudes and behaviours,
simulation and modelling, climate change, engineering, product development,
standards and specifications. TRL’s work in the area of autonomy including
human factors and simulation, automation safety, network modelling and
infrastructure provides a holistic view to the successful introduction of
autonomous vehicles.
The Centre for Professional Education
The Centre for Professional Education (CPE) is the University of Warwick’s
global service provider for high quality training and professional education.
This new centre builds on the success of Warwick’s existing expertise in
teacher training. In addition to the traditional PGCE University-Led training
route, CPE also offers PGCE School-Led options in training and salaried
routes. Our PGCEs cover Early Years, Primary and Secondary across a range
of subject specialisms and all include Master’s level credits as standard.
e
We accept disciplines from all areas for Early Years and Primary Teaching.
Secondary Teaching requires at least 50% of degree content to relate to the
subject specialism.

The Brilliant Club is an award winning non-profit organisation that exists to
widen access to top universities for outstanding pupils from non-selective
state schools. We recruit, train and place doctoral and postdoctoral
researchers in non-selective state schools and sixth form colleges serving low
participation communities to deliver programmes of university-style tutorials to
small groups of outstanding pupils, which develop the knowledge, skills and
ambition that help those pupils to secure places at top universities. Working
together with schools, colleges and universities, we are building a national
movement that mobilises doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to engage
with challenging schools and to address educational disadvantage more
broadly. Our doctoral and postdoctoral researchers are placed in schools
to deliver programmes from Year 6 through to Year 12. We are currently
working with over 150 schools and colleges in London, the South East and
the Midlands, placing over 250 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to work
with more than 5000 pupils.
