Members present: Dr. Judy Neale (Chair), Dr. Marcy Blackburn, Dr. David Cameron, Dr.
Michael Cass, Dr. Sue Fuson, Ms. Shirley Goos, Dr. Barbara Griffin, Dr. Anita Hernandez, Mr.
John Hodgson, Dr. Gregory Hoepfner, Dr. Lance Janda, Dr. Teresa Lubrano, Dr. Margie
McMahan, Dr. Mark Reid, Dr. Michelle Smith, Mr. Justin Walton, Mrs. Edna Williams, and Ms.
Jan Thomas (LPS) representative.
Members absent: Dr. Kurtis Koll, and Mr. Robert Dowell (LPS representative). Two new
student representatives, one elementary education and one secondary, need to be selected and
approved by Student Government.
Ms. Shirley Goos is representing the Math Department and Mr. John Hodgson is representing the
Department of English. Both new members were welcomed to the Committee.
(1) Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Judy Neale.
(2) The first item of business was review of minutes of last meeting. Michael Cass moved to
approve minutes, Lance Janda seconded approval of minutes. Motion passed unanimously.
(3) A list of four (4) students who have been interviewed by the Selection, Admission and
Retention Committee, was presented to the Teacher Education Council. Four students have met
all criteria for admission. John Hodgson moved and Sue Fuson seconded that the four applicants
are recommended to the Director of Teacher Education for admission to Teacher Education.
Motion passed unanimously.
(4) The Chair discussed placement of students in public schools. Copies of the questions
education students will be asked regarding criminal activity were furnished to each member of
the Teacher Education Council. If a student answers yes to any of the questions, he/she cannot be
placed in the public schools. Other departments that place students in field components in the
public schools must decide if they will use these questions before placing students in the schools.
(5) Sue Fuson, Chair of the Department of Education, presented proposed changes in Elementary
Education courses recommended by the departmental curriculum committee. Marcy Blackburn
made motion that the prerequisites for EDUC 3753, Educational Psychology, be revised to read:
EDUC 3733 and admission to Teacher Education (for education majors), OR PSYCH 3353 (for
psychology majors). Gregory Hoepfner seconded motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Margie McMahan made motion to remove the prerequisites of EDUC 3033 or EDUC 3073 for
enrollment in SPED 3103, The Exceptional Child. Sue Fuson seconded motion. Motion passed
unanimously.
Anita Hernandez made motion that the restriction of being admitted to Teacher Education be
removed from EDUC 3533, Teaching Intermediate Reading. Gregory Hoepfner seconded
motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Lance Janda suggested that the Social Studies electives on the plan of study for Elementary
Education be HIST 1483/1493, so that students would have the entire American History
sequence. The need for elementary education majors to have both economics and geography was
discussed. Suggestion was made to offer Economic Geography. No action was taken.
(6) Next meeting will be Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at 4:00 p.m. (due to fall break). Teacher
Education interviews are scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, 2001, a.m.
